I'm finally replacing the PS pump, and when I tried to pull the in and out tubes off of the oil reservoir, they were rock hard. I could not even tip the reservoir over like you did to drain the oil out! I heated up the tube ends with a heat gun to remove them; carefully! A new reservoir is $300! Because the "soft" lines are rock hard, I will replace all of the lines. I had to drop the rack to remove the 2 banjo bolts on the rack, but I spray painted a patch at the rack-mount joint, in hopes I can line it back up without moving the steering wheel out-of-center. Before I started, I of course came back to your channel to watch your awesome How to replace and bleed your PS pump video! Thanks again Christian!

Hey Chris, Collector Car Feed did a video on AutoZone's price gouging yesterday. He recommends RockAuto and they in-fact do have cheaper prices. Going to be doing the LS 400 brake upgrade on my GS 400 in 2 weeks once the parts come in!

Do watch for your wheels too and make sure they do clear. I ran the F Sport wheels 18x8 +45 and they like barely cleared, but rubbed my caliper and you can see on my wheel on the back until it cleared itself

Thank you for the fantastic DIY video Christian! I'm finally replacing the PS pump in my '00 GS400, in hopes that 1. My steering gets much lighter, and 2. The steering wheel returns to center through a turn, which it no longer does. I have to manually turn the steering wheel back to center. The pump has been whining for some time, not loudly, but audibly. I hope the brand new $400 pump from Longo Lexus does the trick. I've also been adjusting the preload screw on the rack for some time, trying to solve the steering wheel vibration at 70 mph, and that seems to help, but it makes the steering even harder. Since so many 2GS owners report that the steering is very light in their cars, I'm hoping the new pump provides enough pressure to make the steering light, return to center, and maybe even dampen the steering wheel vibration on the highway on my 2GS.

Hey! I’ll have to research what the lines do. I believe it’s related to idle up when engine speed is low. A new pump should help restore your steering feel. Regarding your vibration it could be bad caster arm bushings. Have you replaced those yet? My next episode should be on that, but it’s going to be a few weeks. 😎
@drrock5356
@drrock5356 8 ай бұрын
@@ForwardMomentum Replacing the caster arm bushings was my 1st mod/fix. When I pushed them out on a hydraulic press, I found the OEM rubber was still good. Next, the PU bushings seemed like an improvement, in that they have reduced deflection versus OEM rubber, but it did not stop the steering wheel vibration, which only happens at 65+ mph (high engine rpm). What I've noticed is, if I grab the vibrating steering whee firmly with 2 hands, the vibration stops. I believe mild tire vibration is hitting the resonant frequency of the steering shaft and wheel, causing the steering wheel to vibrate greatly at speed. I'll test the theory by taping weights to the steering wheel, and see if that changes the natural frequency, therefore canceling the resonance at speed. I'll replace the pump this Spring, when I have more time. I purchased a new pressure line too, and all new soft lines. I look forward to seeing ForwardMomentum's thorough video instructions :)

I'm also going to make and install a drip pan/shield between the PS pump and my expensive 200A alternator, before the new pump goes back in. I may also pack some nasty ceramic insulation behind the alternator, which sits in front of the exhaust manifold (log), to keep the heat down.

is there anything specific between the 2 pumps? like are the 3uz ones more reliable or is the leaky reputation from the 1uz pump still apply? just wanna know why you went that route due to my leaky 1uz pump killing my alternator lol

I finally installed the new PS Pump, and I have a question about the banjo bolts. Is it required to add the copper washers over the silver gasket "cage"? The service manual just shows the silver gasket cage, so I didn't add the copper washers. Also, my brand new Toyota PS Pump came with a bolt installed where the vacuum lines connect to the pressure switch, and the bolt is fully torqued, so I'm blocking off the 2 vacuum lines as well.
@ForwardMomentum
@ForwardMomentum 7 ай бұрын
No, copper washers are not needed if you have the “cage” washers. Sounds good on the block off. I have been running mine like that for a while now with no ill effects. 👍

@@ForwardMomentum Great, thanks again Christian! 4 weeks of driving on the new PS pump and lines, and no leaks! The steering wheel vibration resonance at 70+mph is also finally gone! I also just installed front steering knuckle RCA's (Roll Center Adjuster) spacers from Figs this weekend, and they seem to have solved the hard-steering problem! Steering effort is about %50 better with the spacers, and I also have the steering ECU potentiometer installed, so I can dial back the hydraulic assist on the freeway. Performing the steering ECU hack would be a cool FM video to see!

Why after replacing the power steering pump does the steering wheel still feel stiff ?
@ForwardMomentum
@ForwardMomentum 6 ай бұрын
Perhaps the stiffness wasn’t caused by the PS pump to begin with? It could be the rack, tie rods, LBJs…

Have you ever thought of converting to an electrical power steering pump?
@ForwardMomentum
@ForwardMomentum 10 ай бұрын
Yes, but it would require the delete bracket, new belt, e-pump, and wiring/programming ability to ensure the feel was correct. After adding all that up, it wasn’t worth it for me, especially since I did this for $85 USD.

Why would you do a vacuum line delete and how do you decide you don't use them?
@ForwardMomentum

Because I never put barbed fittings on my supercharged intake set up, I never used the lines. I felt no difference while driving the car in how the power steering feels. Thus I don’t use the lines any longer.

My ABS/VSC light started to turn on a while back. I found that it was the connection to the sensor, located somewhere under the arm rest, IIRC. Joggling the plug solved the issue, and the light hasn't turned on since. Techstream will tell you if you have codes, and help you troubleshoot it. There's also a mod to add a switch to the ABS/VSC light, so that you can drift around with the control off, and the light is also off, so that it no longer annoys you to see it on.
