Power steer pumps overview

Kelvin, you're an awesome dude! Thanks for this video. I have gone through three different ps pumps in my engine swap project. Finally have settled on a pump from a vvti engine that had the solenoid on it. I eliminated the solenoid, and only use the little vacuum operated valve. Works well, but I am using an old solid front axle with crossover steering, no steering rack. I also ended up using a reservoir from a toyota van and that now contains the fluid versus it overflowing once heated up. Not sure if it's a permanent fix, but so far it's working well and runs quietly.

Do you have a powersteer cooler? We run them on every swap we do

@@CartuneNZ I am using the transmission oil cooler built into the ls400 radiator, that fit well in the swap. Would you recommend a different/better cooler?

@@danlaetsch8493 yes, We use external coolers which tend to.work better

@@CartuneNZ I have dual electric fans on my radiator, and a temperature switch set to come on at 180°f. It takes awhile to warm up enough to kick on the fans, so a separate cooler probably would help keep the ps pump fluid cooler.

The 5VZ pump looks awfully similar to the non-VVTI LS pump. Are they interchangeable?

Hey Kelvin, In my swap I had planned on using the stock earliest model you show here with the attached reservoir. I rebuilt it and plan to run it through the trans cooler portion of my radiator since I have a manual. Is this wise or should I just pony up for the Trail Gear aftermarket one. I will be rock crawling.

Thanks for this video - my 1996 LS400 makes a groaning sound and I have tried jacking up the front and moving the steering lock-to-lock and it still groans. So I bought a new Chinese-ium (OEM supplier?) pump but have not installed it. I want to change/flush out the old fluid 1st! and see if it quiets down. Power steering works perfectly except for the groaning when parking or 1st(!) starting it up.

A flush is a great idea. I avoid many of the china pumps, Its funny when we pull them apart what they have inside. Whines are common with them.

@@CartuneNZ I will do a flush. Drive it, and then another flush if its still whineiny. (I only bought the cheap Chinese pump as a spare part in case to OE pump fails.)

I had a question I have a 1986 Lexus LS 400 and the computer burned up and I replaced it and it still has no power. How do you fix this problem I’ve checked all the fuses for the ECU and relays. Nothings blown how to fix.

The reserviour fouls on the wider tappet covers, hence why toyota moved to a remote reserviour on all models of 3uz
