This video just saved me $$$! Thank you! Tip: If your doing the repair alone, try removing the parking-brake cable bracket from the hinge pin. Then simply reattach it to the new brake shoe. This way you won't need to struggle with the spring.

If you want to know the difference on what type of brakes without taking the wheels off look on the rear backing plate from underneath the vehicle at 3:00 and 9:00 oclock if you see what looks like nail heads you have the brakes in this video if you don't see them you have the large horseshoe style spring Hope this helps

My break adjuster was extended out when trying to initially get drums off. This causes the pads to be pressed into the drum and you will not get the drum off. I ended up breaking the first side off before i realized what happened and how to fix. There is small rubber gasket on the back of the drum housing and you can get a screw driver in there to spin the adjuster wheel and loosen the tension.

Except; watch closely as we are informed to connect the blue spring to the “brackets on both shoes”. See anything out of place? Watch very closely at the adjustment segment, around 6:55, and you’re going to actually see the blue spring, connected to the adjuster bracket. That is of course unless I need a new prescription for my glasses

You might mention a couple items when reassembling the adjuster and lever. The L shaped lever has to both go on the rivet on the shoe and inside the slot on the left end of the adjuster to keep it in place. I had to disassemble after realizing this. Just a note...

Getting ready to start on this tonight and wrap it up in the morning. I watched another video for the same year on the GMC Sierra and it looks slightly complicated. There was some bar that ran from the midway on one side around the inside edge around the bottom coming back up to the other side ending halfway up. I hope mine is like this because it seems a lot more simplified.

Great video, as I have come to expect from you guys! Would strongly suggest at least two items, though. $10 brake pliers are worth every cent of it and more. Also, a tie-down, wrapped around both shoes holds them in place, so you don't need a second person or to strain yourself or to have them pop out. Spring washer tool is pretty cool and cheap, too, instead of vice grips, but not as critical as the other two items, I believe.

Love your vids. They have helped me knock out a couple projects on my vehicles. Got a question for ya, after watching a few different videos on changing drum brakes on a 2011 Silverado, there are apparently two different drum brake setups. One setup is obviously the kind you worked on in the video. The 2nd setup has a totally different lower spring setup. It looks to be in the shape of giant U. Do you know a way I can tell what drum brake setup my truck might have without pulling thee wheel & drum off to see?
@mralca7644 Жыл бұрын
I just started working on my brakes yesterday, finding out the same thing you explained. What I'm thinking is that the one with the lower small spring goes on the z71 package. Because I changed other brakes on a regular 4x4 Silverado and a 2x4 Silverado and both came with the big U setup. The thing is that auto parts in my area don't have the z71 ones. Im heading to the dealership today hoping they have them in stock. Hope it helps.
@brogers114able7 жыл бұрын
Isn't it important to have the shoes adjusted the same on the passenger/driver side? Also, wouldn't a little bit of friction between the drum and shoes cause when the brake isn't applied cause premature shoe wear? Last question, is the ring/clip that holds the drum in place need to be put back on? I didn't see that in the video. You do great work with these videos!
@1AAuto7 жыл бұрын
+Ben Rogers Thank you for checking us out. The driver and passenger side shoes should have the same alignment. A little bit of friction between the drum and shoe could cause premature wear. Some of these clips or rings are inserted from the manufacturer to ease the bulk manufacturing process. You may attempt to reuse it, or in most cases you may discard of it as long as the other bolts are installed. 1aauto.com

Instead of taking off the emergency brake cable just take off the silver clip on the back of the brake shoe that is holding the cable part. WAY EASIER to squeeze the clip back on the new shoe then pulling the cable back into place

You do not need to disconnect the park brake cable at the bottom. You can disconnect the lever piece by removing the clip on the back of the pin at the top which you have to do anyway to put the new shoe on. The tension on that spring makes it darn near impossible to get back on.

Rear discs just couldn't take the punishment put on them with heavy loads or heavy trailers. No big deal...I've gotten 220k out of my rear drums on my 08 Silverado. I would have already done 4 or 5 disc brake jobs considering I actually use the truck to work as a truck. How do you adjust the e brake?
@bobbiebigg35 жыл бұрын
Under the drivers seat outside of the frame rail under the truck, the single cable has a union, that splits into two separate cables one for left and right side, there is a threaded rod with about 8" of adjustment with a 10mm wrench and vise gripes to hold end of single cable coming from e-brake inside cab, spray some weasel piss on it and your good to go.
