This is how to change the coolant for a Ford F150 5.4L 2004-2008. I used a little over a gallon of coolant concentrate and a little over a gallon of distilled water. Doing this job is fairly easy and you really only need a bucket. If you are going to use a socket on the plastic drain plug BE GENTLE it is plastic and fragile.

On my 2004 F150, there is a plastic fitting next to the drain plug(facing the passenger front tire). Buy a foot or two piece of 3/8 tubing and push one end on it, and the other end in the bucket. A lot less messy. Also, Amazon sells premixed 50/50 ford gold coolant too. It’s more expensive, but a lot less hassle and your assured of the right mix. Save you a trip to the store to buy distilled water.

Why make it so difficult. It is either passenger side or drivers side. So simple. Such as in "when dropping the fuel tank it is much easier to remove the bolts on the drivers side first". It doesn't matter if the tank is on the left or ride of the vehicle it is easier to understand which bolts to remove first relative to passenger side or drivers side. Also I agree with the 50/50 mix as that is the percentage where you will get the best upper temperature control and the lowest freezing point. I also agree with you about distilled water.

Nothing was mentioned about bleeding the air from the system. Do these models take care of that on their own, or is there another step that was missed in the video? Thanks in advance.

The thermostats have a very small hole in them to allow air to pass, however after filling up the coolant reservoir(with the cap off) I would squeeze the upper radiator hose to push air out of the system as much as I could.

Pull off your upper and lower radiator hose and more will come out. Then reattach the hoses and fill it up. Now you have to run it and purge the bubbles out.

Check for a coolant leak at the heater hose which runs on top of the coil pack/plugs. This is a common problem and what happens is the coolant leaks onto the coil/plugs causing a misfire. Good luck!

This gets most of the coolant out. Just like an oil change the only way you are getting all of it out is if you take the engine apart. So whatever comes out is enough. You could flush the system if you live in a state where that is legal, which I don't. Thanks for watching!

Simply disconnect the upper heater hose from the connection on top of the engine and the coolant trapped in the engine and heater core will drain out as well. Leave the hose disconnected when refilling until coolant comes out of the connection then reattach. This fills the engine as complete as possible behind the closed thermostat leaving the smallest air pocket inside because the air is venting out of the connection as it fills. Run until at operation temp (thermostat open) then top off. By the way if you want the correct coolant and the Ford dealer isn't open get gold G-05 spec - hint Ford doesn't make coolant but Zerex (Valvoline) does and even puts the Motorcraft brand on the bottle sometimes. Bonus points Motorcraft oil is made by Conoco-Phillips aka Kendall = very good stuff.
