You can feel the hoses before and after the thermostat to see if it's opening and allowing the anti-freeze to flow through the system. If the thermostat is old, it wouldn't hurt to replace it to begin with. They're usually only a couple of dollars. Hope this helps you out.

Great video!! I do agree with one of the other commentators that the Large Crescent Wrench & Hammer need to be added to the tools list. Other than that I was able to follow the instructions and with the exception of a coffee break, was able to finish the job in about 2 1/2 hours. I did have trouble getting the fan off as easily as you did. Thanks so much for your video.

UPDATE: Thanks again guys on the video it was extremely helpful. The operation was a huge success thanks to your helpful tips. The only thing I had trouble with was getting the fan/clutch assembly off the old pump. It would slip so that I couldn't get any torque on the nut. I finally went to the store and found a "FAN CLUTCH SPANNER WRENCH". This tool saved the day ; it resembles a large flat open end wrench with two metal pins on the tips that went in to the respective holes on the pump pulley. This allowed me to get the necessary torque to remove the fan. Thanks again and I will be a regular user of of this site for both parts and repair advice! Sincerely, MickeyBro!

Thank you for this video! I am not a mechanic (by trade) but am very mechanically inclined; I do all my own oil changes and most repairs. After seeing this video and all the steps made this so much easier! I normally would have saved this for the weekend but after watching, I knew I was going to knock this out this afternoon...2 1/2 hours...and I took my time because the truck was hot. Now, nothing to interfere with the gun show on Saturday! Thanks again.

Handy reference video I used to replace the water pump on my '97 GMC Sierra, but there were a a couple differences. #!, on the '97, no need to remove the tensioner pulley; but, the idler pulley did have to come off to get to the heater hoses. Removing the fan clutch was the biggest challenge. You MUST use penetrator to let it work into the threads to work it loose. I also used lock tight when I reinstalled the new water pump. A clutch bolt wrench is a must here. I used a 15" crescent.

Thanks for the video. I was able to do replace the water pump myself. I used the clamp method to keep the fan belt from moving and a pipe wrench to remove the fan clutch. I had good leverage with the pipe wrench and the fan clutch loosened very easily.

Great job Mike. Thanks for the video. Hey guys, this info is for anyone who's having their engine temp go above normal operating range after new pump install. This is happening due to the thermostat not letting coolant flow to the radiator. What I did to correct this was, first make sure engine is cool. Remove hose from top of water pump. Locate the overflow hose thats runs from the top of fill resevoir to the left side of the rad. Disconnect this hose from the rad. Go back to the hose you removed from the top of the water pump and hold the hose up so you can pour coolant in it to fill up the radiator until the coolant runs out of the hole where you disconnected the hose for the overflow on the radiator. Hook both hoses back up where they go and restart vehicle with the pressure cap off the refill resevoir add coolant as needed until proper level has been reached. Goodluck. Hope this little description helps you out. Cheers

@wavehog41 You may want to replace the thermostat and also try to relieve any air pockets that may be in the system. To do this (when the vehicle's cold) remove the radiator cap and start the truck. Turn the heat on full blast inside of the vehicle and monitor the level of the coolant inside of the radiator. It the level goes down top off the radiator with some fresh antifreeze. Hope this helps you out.

Mostly a realistic video of the job. I like how you don't edit out things like dropping a bolt (which probably rolled to the exact center of the truck - as they always do). I say mostly because I've never heard you curse at a stuck bolt or a slipped wrench. LOL. Nice job on these videos

@richcramify If you took the belt off you may want to put it back on, this will put some tension on the pulley so that you can break the bolts loose. Once you break them free you can take the belt back off and then continue removing the bolts.Hope this helps.

This video help me to replace the water pump on my 1997 K1500 4.3. Not quite the same but close enough. One whack (or two) on the fan nut didn't do it for me. I kept at it for 5 minutes and grabbed the belt to help it stop moving but finally got it. The hardest part was getting the bolts started on the replacement pump, it's tight and down low on the 4.3. The water pump bolts can be reused because they are not torque to yield. Also the water pump should have a gasket used if it is provided or in some vehicles, there is an O-ring.

If you're not careful and you mix Dexcool with the wrong anti-freeze it will clump up in the system. If you want to switch to regular antifreeze you should flush the system out completely, then buy a decent antiffreeze. I had to replace the radiator in my Jeep and just made the switch myself. If was a good time to do it, because I had to also replace the water pump and hoses. Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the video it helped me out. Mine was leaking from the gasekt on the left side. It was incorrectly installed at the factor. No telling how long it has been leaking. The original gaskets were just the red squares with nothign to hold them, so they slipped during installation. The new one I installed had copy gaskets with rubber square inserts.

It looks like your on the right track. You may want to change the fluids, and give her a tune-up, also check the brakes.

Yes you are correct. If it's worn you may want to replace it with a new one.
