You can feel the hoses before and after the thermostat to see if it's opening and allowing the anti-freeze to flow through the system. If the thermostat is old, it wouldn't hurt to replace it to begin with. They're usually only a couple of dollars. Hope this helps you out.

This video is awesome!! I had a water pump problem and followed it step by step this evening to fix my 02 chevy avalanche. I let it run for about a half hour while I cleaned up my garage and not one single leak!! I'm thankful to finally have the dreaded low coolant light finally gone. Thanks for this great video.

@wavehog41 You may want to replace the thermostat and also try to relieve any air pockets that may be in the system. To do this (when the vehicle's cold) remove the radiator cap and start the truck. Turn the heat on full blast inside of the vehicle and monitor the level of the coolant inside of the radiator. It the level goes down top off the radiator with some fresh antifreeze. Hope this helps you out.

Handy reference video I used to replace the water pump on my '97 GMC Sierra, but there were a a couple differences. #!, on the '97, no need to remove the tensioner pulley; but, the idler pulley did have to come off to get to the heater hoses. Removing the fan clutch was the biggest challenge. You MUST use penetrator to let it work into the threads to work it loose. I also used lock tight when I reinstalled the new water pump. A clutch bolt wrench is a must here. I used a 15" crescent.

Thank you for this video! I am not a mechanic (by trade) but am very mechanically inclined; I do all my own oil changes and most repairs. After seeing this video and all the steps made this so much easier! I normally would have saved this for the weekend but after watching, I knew I was going to knock this out this afternoon...2 1/2 hours...and I took my time because the truck was hot. Now, nothing to interfere with the gun show on Saturday! Thanks again.

Great job Mike. Thanks for the video. Hey guys, this info is for anyone who's having their engine temp go above normal operating range after new pump install. This is happening due to the thermostat not letting coolant flow to the radiator. What I did to correct this was, first make sure engine is cool. Remove hose from top of water pump. Locate the overflow hose thats runs from the top of fill resevoir to the left side of the rad. Disconnect this hose from the rad. Go back to the hose you removed from the top of the water pump and hold the hose up so you can pour coolant in it to fill up the radiator until the coolant runs out of the hole where you disconnected the hose for the overflow on the radiator. Hook both hoses back up where they go and restart vehicle with the pressure cap off the refill resevoir add coolant as needed until proper level has been reached. Goodluck. Hope this little description helps you out. Cheers

UPDATE: Thanks again guys on the video it was extremely helpful. The operation was a huge success thanks to your helpful tips. The only thing I had trouble with was getting the fan/clutch assembly off the old pump. It would slip so that I couldn't get any torque on the nut. I finally went to the store and found a "FAN CLUTCH SPANNER WRENCH". This tool saved the day ; it resembles a large flat open end wrench with two metal pins on the tips that went in to the respective holes on the pump pulley. This allowed me to get the necessary torque to remove the fan. Thanks again and I will be a regular user of of this site for both parts and repair advice! Sincerely, MickeyBro!

Hello and greetings form Bethlehem PA. Just replaced the water pump on my 2004, 2500 HD Sliverado 4WD@ 150,853 miles. You could not have made it any easier. Other than that I was able to follow the instructions and with the exception of a coffee break, was able to finish the job in about 2 1/2 hours. I did have trouble getting the fan off as easily as you did. Thanks so much for your video.

If you're not careful and you mix Dexcool with the wrong anti-freeze it will clump up in the system. If you want to switch to regular antifreeze you should flush the system out completely, then buy a decent antiffreeze. I had to replace the radiator in my Jeep and just made the switch myself. If was a good time to do it, because I had to also replace the water pump and hoses. Hope this helps you out.

@richcramify If you took the belt off you may want to put it back on, this will put some tension on the pulley so that you can break the bolts loose. Once you break them free you can take the belt back off and then continue removing the bolts.Hope this helps.

The water pump bolts can be reused because they are not torque to yield. Also the water pump should have a gasket used if it is provided or in some vehicles, there is an O-ring.

@blakegotanewface What you can do is WHEN THE TRUCK IS COLD, take the radiator cap off, blast the heat in the cab and start the truck. This will help any air pockets to find their way out of the system. Top the radiator off with antifreeze if the level drops, and top off the overflow tank. If the heat is still luke warm at best, feel the hose on the other side of the thermostat going to the heater core to see if it's warm. If it is you could try flushing the core with a hose.
