Yep depending on the state. Not legal in MA. Inspection shop will fail yoyr car when they find it, or any other of the tinyest leaks in the exaust. So no mufler clamps eighter, they leak they fail.

Cheap ramps, a second hand welder and patience. Still cheaper than a muffler shop

Or a measuring tape, a jack, JB weld exhaust tape, some exhaust U clamps and about 20 minutes

I couldn't see anything wrong with the old one, mine is frayed at one end where the pipe has been dropped and the wire was pulled out from the edge and I'm wondering if it's an MOT failure even though it doesn't seem to be leaking.

Yes it does! O2 sensor get a bad reading from exhaust gas!

That is a good repair, but since you took one end down, why not just replace the entire front pipe? There are probably two more flange bolts on the other end we can't see. Take those out and drop the whole pipe. Save you all that labour.

It cost about $120-300 more for the entire pipe when you can just pay about $30 foe the flex and weld it yourself. So basically he saved himself about $400.

Can a leaking or blocked catalytic converter cause misfiring

i personally think so. my car running a cylinder 1 misfire code. i've changed the spark plugs twice now in 1 month. changed the spark plug wires with OEM ones. no fix. my biggest guess since it is also reading catalytic converter and o2 sensor issues is that my converter is clogged ( car is a 98 and been sitting majority of it's life with little to no maintenance ). was going to try and change the o2 sensors only but my converter came in ( already bought it ) so im changing that. only other thing that i can assume really is clogged fuel injectors. im not a mechanic though so i can't verify. right now im just getting ready to change my setup myself.

sadly after changing my converter the misfiring still didn't stop. car runs smoother/quieter not though but yea it still misfires. i've tried STP intake valve cleaner not totally sure if i did procedures properly as my car doesn't have RPM meter on it. that helped a little with the rough idle but still misfire code i really don't know wth is wrong with it. like i said my only logical guess at this point is injector is clogged. it drives fine at this point but when idling/stopped that is when you really feel the rough idle from the misfire.

Its a wire feed MIG style welder using argon gas, more than likely at a 75% Argon 25% Carbon Dioxide (CO2) mix. Welding exhaust takes a steady hand and a low temperature because of how thin the metal is.

Why has he had to change the gasket, when he's just cut out and replaced the flexi part? I wouldn't be able to undo the nuts on mine to get to the gasket.

im guessing maybe a leak? cheaper to fix the flex part then the entire setup just like with catalytics if you can weld then just cut it out and put in new ones and weld it in place or i've seen one guy bolt it on with clamps too. if leaking then best to change the gasket as well they are cheap. spray the nuts/bolts with penetrating oil it's what im going to do especially since mine are rusted af. can't really torch my converter either i dont have a torch and also i still can't torch the front end due to lots of grease build up. would easily cause a fire

Those flex pipes rust out. They get weak from flexing with the movement of the vehicle and are a rust magnet.

If u have proper tools and safe ramps. Almost any part of the exhauat can be changed without a welder. I use clamps from autozone. And it never fails. DO NOT use tapes of glues. Its waste of money.

You can measure your existing flex pipe and if you're lucky you will find the exact length you need but all the replacement flex pipes I found were longer overall than the one on the car. I haven't done the install yet but plan to remove the existing pipe and cut down the new pipe to fit
