I'm having trouble with the hard to reach flange bolt on the drivers side. If I take off the front drive shift it would be cake. But that's alot of work

This video really helped me out! I had both drivers side and passengers side rear bolts broken when removing stock manifolds to install long tubes. Using the broken stud as a guide was a great little trick for the install. Don't know where I'd be without y'alls videos! I've saved thousands thanks yo y'all!!

This is a great method, I used it to remove 2 on my truck. Another handy tool that works really well with this method is a tiny plumber's pipe wrench, like 6" long. It can grab onto the bolt and can be easier to lock it on and turn, readjust, and turn. Using vice grips only killed my hands, you only get like 1/8 of a turn and have to relock them tight every time.

Check out the Kral auto parts brackets. Used for a bolt broke in the head. Much easier. Doorman and others make a similar bracket as well.

the manifold reminds me of a Ford, 289 V-8 the long bolts then the short ones ford had very Good design.

The original type bolts at 4:18 shows tapered bolts (on top) which are ALOT better to guide the exhaust manifold back into place than those straight ones with no taper.

I had the same bolt break as you did but you just had the head pop off, my bolt broke off half way down and there is nothing to get a hold of. Is there any way to get it out without pulling the whole motor because I don't think there is any room to drill it out.

They look like APDTY Zinc plated bolts. They are metric grade 10.9 (English = grade 8). You can use the lighter (grade 5) bolts, but I would personally go with the stronger bolts. GM LS engines are notorious for their exhaust manifold bolts breaking off.

why no use a spray to help ??? liquid wrench i have... vice grips to loosen broken stud then pliers to unscrew it out maybe ???... now some say to remove exhause manifold off to sand flat or check for flatness. then no use gasket just use a high temp silicone glue... just say`n

Go with metric Grade 10.9 (English grade 8) manifold bolts. They are stronger and will hold up better. Try not to skimp and use the softer grade 5 bolts, otherwise, you might find yourself replacing them again.

I have that same broken drivers side bolt that's hard to get to but it broke off in the head. I guess I'll have to use a screw extractor with a tiny right angle drill (ebay). Any comments or anyone know someone who has done that?

It did on my truck...if your exhaust is leaking, it can cause the O2 sensor to be slightly thrown off and signaling a computer code. This results in the check engine light coming on.

Why would you want to skimp out on a $20 gasket? After spending hours of labor removing and reinstalling the manifold, the old gasket should be replaced. Otherwise, you may find yourself doing it all over again.

$20 a per stud at the Mufflerman shop, last time it was done, had 13 broken out of 16. Then add the gaskets

Nice but useless when all my broken bolts are broken inside the hole in the head. I need to extract them out ! No the same easy job since you need to remove a lot of stuff like complete header, wheel well plastic etc.

Exhaust manifold bolts weaken over time because of all the heating and cooling cycles they go through.

MAJOR PROBLEM: On the REPLACEMENT manifold bolts they thread the full length of the bolt. **The factory bolts do not** If you check, the new bolts will bottom out much sooner, and in turn be barely contacting the manifold and gasket. Its one of the biggest over-looked issues that leads to more Exhaust manifold problems because they're basically loose. To see for yourself, test the bolts and see how far they screw in. You'll find they hardly touch the manifold before bottoming out, if at all. Conclusion: Cut the bolts shorter or remove the first 3-threads with a grinder. Fixed it for me, so I could then properly torque the manifold to 18lbs. Hope this helps.
