2:43 - Raise vehicle and remove front wheels with a 21mm socket 4:49 - Remove brake caliper to make be able to pull the cv out spray axel nut with penatrating fluid 6:32 - Remove cotter pin from ball joint an the 17mm nut from the tie rod end 6:54 - use tire rod removal tool to remove tire rod (if not use hammer) 7:30 - Remove the 30mm axle nut using impact (takes 200ft torque) 8:20 - Remove 2 bolts from strut behing the rotor 9:28 - Pulling part of the CV axel out 11:00 - Found that ball joint boot is worn need to replace about $50 11:15 - Removing and cleaning ABS sensor, he had issues in the past with ABS 12:01 - Removing CV axle housing it has a retaining ring around the spline in order to pull out, tool didn't work had to use pry bar from underneath the car 12:44 - Removing the hub assembly 13:19 - Remove retaining clip for the other side of the vehicle 15:16 - Using slide hammer to pull axel out of transmission demonstration 17:59 - Start putting back together 20:19 - Video repeats

I find this job is a lot easier if you don't remove the tie rod ends or lower ball joint. Simply loosening the top strut bolts, removing the wheel, strut mount bolts, 10mm ABS sensor wire mount bolt, brake line bolt, caliper at the mounts, rotor, and the plastic under tray is all that is required. The large snap ring can be removed using hose pliers from underneath and the bearing on the pass side slammed out with a crow bar and 4 lb hammer (minutes of whacking). The original axle nuts are 12 pt 30mm, but one of mine was a 6 point 32mm, so you'll never know what you find.

Just some friendly advice for everyone out there never refer to front left or front right always say front passenger front drivers that way it doesn’t matter what your orientation is on the vehicle you know where we’re talking about

Trying to swap out my wife’s front struts on her 05 RX330 and had to watch your video. Driver side axle got caught up and I couldn’t slide the hub back into the strut bracket, think I’m gonna have to pull the axle out. Not how I planned to spend my day but your video did help, thank you for sharing

This video allowed me to do this by myself....$6500 @ lexus $800 in parts. Struts(front)/shocks(rear), wheel bearings(front), steering knuckle assembly(front), ball joints, both axles. Used all exact tools described.

If you would have taken the three bolts that held the lower ball joint out . I think you could have taken the axle out, the front end would still be in better alignment when finished. The top bolts are used to align the front tires.

Awesome video. I was not successful at removing the right side axle, even with a slide hammer. It did not budge after over an hour of trying different things.

The Shade Tree Fix-it Man we decided to keep the car and run it as long as it will go. I first said I was not about to tackle the job. It has 210,000 miles on it now...interior looks and feels like new. So that means it needs some maintenance. A local non-OEM shop quoted $1000.00 (parts and labor) to replace these axles. The parts cost me $300.00....my sweat equity was free, sort of! As an added bonus my son helped me and got some good training.

@@JunkyardTailgate Working with your son is priceless. I have many fond memories of doing auto repairs with my boys. My perspective is not from a want to, but from a "my body won't let me" at this point in the game, that and no cement floor to work on only a gravel driveway. I appreciate being able to do these things vicariously through "young" fellas like you! :))

Nice. Working on it now. A couple of things. It isn't a 30 mm axle nut (you say 32 mm later which I think is right-will let you know tomorrow when my 32 mm 12 point impact socket arrives). Second, you absolutely need a 12 point socket. Don't use a 6 point or you will shred your axle nut and never be able to get it off. Also, since you did remove the strut, maybe you could show us how that is done? Also, there are at least two types of axle removal tools you can rent. I think the one that I rented will probably not work but I'll find that out tomorrow when I get the axle nut off. So if that is true, maybe be specific that we use the style tool you have in the video? Finally (I think, I assume we need to re-install that plastic cup on the end of the passenger side axle (where it enters the transmission), Is that correct? And is putting that retaining ring easy? Otherwise, this was very straightforward and entertaining. The dog part was fun but your expressions and comments like "this should not be difficult....I hope" and "don't leave home without them" (zipties) were both funny and somehow comforting. Thanks for the hard work.

I'm a little late to this video. 🙂 I appreciate it. I just did CV joints, lower control arms, and lower control arm ball joints. Any chance you know what the mileage was around the time this work was done?

I am currently working on my 2000 Lexus rx300 awd doing a transmission swap. I noticed that my axle nut is a 30mm I don't know if the awd is different or not but I also did not have to remove any brake parts or the tie rod.

Retaining ring on the passenger side from videos is the most difficult task on that side, but we did. How did you get it off?

So the most difficult thing to do, retaining ring on passenger side you chose not to show, give advice or anything? It’s like a DIY as follows: to replace the CV joint and axel simply remove and replace, thanks for watching. This alone will prevent me from watching any more of your videos. Not hating, I appreciate what you do and was a great video up until that point. You can’t simply ignore the most arduous task like that and be helpful to us.

great presentation! what was the problem while driving that made you assess they'll need to be replaced? I have a problem w/ my rx330 only under acceleration it vibrates. When I release the gas petal, it stops vibrating. (the vibration is at around 40+ miles/hr, and its similar to if one of the rims were bent. (but I know wheels/rims are perfect and well balanced). I was told it could be engine mounts, or cv axles as the most likely source. Any opinions? Thanks in advance.

Has to be your cv axle , vibration stops when you release the gas , I have the same problem rn , I replaced my rotors bc I thought it was that but it wasn’t it’s the cv axle

The labor for both axle replacements total between $500-600 at an independent shop. I’m sure the dealership would have been close to $1k for labor only

Nope....it's not a 32 mm axle nut. My 2005 has a 12 point axle nut (star shape). Just ordered a 30mm 12 point impact deep socket-very, very, very hard to find if you are in a hurry (and since my car is sitting on jack stands, I'm in a hurry). I sure hope this is 20mm and not 31 mm because there appears to be no such thing as a 31 mm 12 point impact socket anywhere. And you have to have all of those things. Right size and 12 point so you don't strip the axle nut (and then NEVER get it off). Impact socket because you will likely shatter a standard socket which could be bad for the car and/or your face. Deep because the axle pops out of that nut reasonably far and if the socket is too shallow, you won't be able to get a grip on it. If you are not in a hurry, you can order one of these from Home Depot or Lowes. They are not in stock. Nor are they available from auto parts stores, at least not 30 or 32 mm. Not available at Northern Tools or Harbor Freight. Amazon has a set of shallow sockets (tempting but probably won't work) that were cheaper than one socket from Snap-On. Finally, I found a 30 mm at Snap-On Tools that will ship overnight. For one socket, it was $95 with shipping! Praying that this s not a 31 mm nut....

Set of 4 deep sockets 12 point on Amazon for 32 dollars. Snap on for $95? What a joke. I don’t like or own anything Snap on. Never have never will. Never had a tool break either. See ya Snap on. Vanity brand

Front axle nuts are punched in on front lip to prevent backing out. You first have to pry this up or you’ll shred the threads or have prob removing the nut. I the. Was able to use a standard (non-impact) 30mm 12-point socket with impact wrench with no problem.
