Be careful about shopping online I have found that over 90% online suppliers a pain in the ass to return incorrect parts. And sometimes you never get a part your money's gone they're gone. Pay a dime or two more at your local discount supplier not only is it quicker to return part they usually have the tools you need on-loan to do the work. And expert advice when you're stuck or not sure. You never know when the green wire is yellow in the yellow wire is red depending on the manufacturer and rather Asian European are us or a mix. The black wire and the blue wire and the white wire mean a completely different thing in China and in the UK. Now throw in Germany Japan and Korea oh goodie. And then there's the black and white tiger stripe and the black and white pinstripe what the hell

Yep, Rock Auto is a great online eCommerce retail seller but if your car or truck is up on jack stands & you already removed the old CV Shaft & you need your vehicle for your job, first thing Monday Morning, only to find out that your new replacement CV Shaft arrived bad, or it was the wrong part, unless you live next door to Rock Auto & can walk into their shop & grab a good part, you're way better to be buying your part from your favorite Auto Parts Store, or preferably the local Parts Store with more than 1 [One] of your Parts needed. *****Here is the List of Issues that I have ran into. [I'll re-post the following issues at the top of the page in my personal comment, for people who didn't scroll down to this comment.] Advance Auto: I called in my order with them, [I have nothing against women who work behind the Parts Counter.] I need the Right Side CV Shaft. She then repeated my order to me; Okay, you need the Drivers Side CV Shaft. No, the Right not the Left. Laughingly she said ''Sir the Drivers Side is the Right Side. I said ok. Let me call you back. At this point my son said, I heard the call, I'll go there order it in the store pay cash for it so we can get started. 2 1/2 - 3 hours later his cousin tells my son that it's the wrong one, so my son tells me in front of his cousin, that I gave him the wrong information. Turns out the salesperson who took care of him turned out to be the woman who doesn't know which side is the Right or Left Side of the vehicle. How long has she been giving this bad information to customers. Since this issue was so long, the rest will be in my personal comment at the top of the page. Thanks for reading....

11 years old and still a great video. I remember the first Axle nut I did, 20 Year old honda. bent my breaker bar, snapped a piece of pipe. went to my local KMS, bought a milwaukee 1/2" and it was off in less than a second. Learned a valuable lesson about good tools that day.

Eric, here's a short story, with an unanticipated ending. I pulled the axle, with no problem. When it came time to put in the new one, it wouldn't lock into place. I thought it was the clip, so I took it off, just to check. Turns out, the rebuilt axle was machined incorrectly, with the splines before the ring offset more than 1/64" from the splines after. So, the axle would seat far enough into the tranny to keep it from turning, but made it impossible to seat all the way. It was one of those horror stories, where a one hour job turned into a multiple day job, just to figure out it was a faulty part. Moral of the story, yes, I checked the replacement part to see if it was the same as the original, but not close enough. I haven't found any similar stories on the internet, so I thought I would share. Now, I will being going back to the part store to see if the splines slide up their you know whats, even though they are offset.

Mattm1021 that sucks , reminds me of when I bought new rear brake discs for a vehicle and the parking brake shoes made contact all the time so I had to file them down to make them fit! The brake discs were not "machined" all the way in , on the inside there was a big lip .. if that makes sense.

Not only do you really seem to know what you're doing, the way you present the information and demonstrate the procedures is great. The Chilton's manual for this vehicle is one of the worst (and they all seem terrible these days). Thanks Eric, very good video explanation. If I may share my experience, I had difficulty returning the shaft to the tranny. I have done a shaft replacement on a 99 corolla, and was able to easily push the shaft in. very little difficulty. However, On the 2003 Toyota Vios (Yaris) , after many attempts, the inner CV shaft spring clip was preventing the shaft from being properly inserted. Previously, I i made the very messy mistake of thinking that the shaft had clicked-in locked and I did not go under the car to visually check and verify . But, it really felt that it had clicked. But it apparently had not . Lo and behold, when i started the car and shifted to "R", lots of grinding noise and no transfer of power to tires and a giant pool of tranny fluid on the floor. the shaft was not properly inserted. I figured i had to insert the shaft by leveraging a steel bar, but after a few attempts, I was still unsuccessful . I then tried hammering the shaft end with my standard 1 lb ball-pin hammer and it still did not go in to snap. ( I was almost giving up and thinking of calling a pro!) I feared that violent hammering with the 1 pound hammer was getting to the desperate mode and would destroy the outer CV shaft threads. (I was going no where. ) Even more Desperate, I used my # 4 steel mallet, hammered around 5 blows and , success!!. To get a bigger surface area to absorb the blows, I installed the CV nut back on shaft to protect the threads and this worked. I guess the spring clip looks small, but it can resist even strong hammering let alone strong pushing. I feel the high momentum of a heavy mallet may be needed if pushing by hand or strong violent hammering does not work. I hope this helps ! cheers !!!

My initial job was to replace the bearing. As I went along I found that the spindle of the axle had rusted solid into the bearing. So I soaked the crap out of the bearing and spindle with penetrating oil and put an old nut on the spindle and hammered it until it was free... an hour later it finally loosened up. But I wanted to keep the axle. I even stopped hammering on the spindle end once I saw it loosen up. So I thought I was ok... nope. After putting everything back together I found that it developed a vibration and hum at 70 mph +. And I only used a 2 lb hammer. So hammering on that axle can cause it to fail, even with the axle nut on. Another thing I found out was don't stick the pry bar up too far near the cv axle shaft when knocking it loose. I ended up damaging the seal abit. Live and learn. So replacing a bearing also caused me to have to replace an axle and an axle seal.

I'm a former, certified air craft mechanic with a mechanical aptitude in the 95 percentile, now a detector technician on an atomic accelerator and I have looked at several videos about different auto repairs. Yours is the first one tht I can honestly relate with and I trust without question. I would say that you are in the 96 to 98 percentile of mechanical aptitude and you are very real in your delivery. Thank you for all the details, Eric! You make the most helpful car repair videos! Once the old axle is out, it's also a ** really ** good idea to pull the seal in the transaxle and replace that too! The seal only costs a few dollars, but if it leaks, you could lose all your transmission fluid and grind the transmission to death! The transaxle seal is soft and pliable when it's new, but as it ages, it gets stiff and therefore it's likely to leak! Check out Scotty Kilmer's short video - Fixing A Leaking Transmission.

Just finished doing this on my 95 Accord Wagon (which is basically this vehicle with a different rear end) ... Hardest part really was getting the ball joint stud out of the control arm. I hammered like crazy with no success. Then remembered I have an air hammer! Put the castle nut on upside down a few threads, jacked it up by the stud a little, used the air hammer to push the control arm back down. Took me 10 seconds versus the 10-15 minutes I'd spent trying to get a good angle to swing a heavy hammer! :) Thanks for doing this video and all the other ones! If I hadn't seen your lower control arm video w/ the Element, I would've tried replacing just the bushings on my parents' 99 CR-v. It looked like too much hassle considering the price of a whole new assembly (like you said in the video).

Or maybe it's because your car goes through some pretty extreme g forces and rotational resistance at those points in the wheel and if it just fit to be pulled through the tire, what would hold your wheel to the car? one nut tightened on some threads that fastens it to nothing, I think not

He was staking the axle nut so that it couldn't back out on it's own- you drift a bit of material from the nut into the shaft of the axle, that or the nut had a locking tab.

I knew you where gonna have to stand on it with both feet. Ha...! The first time I had to repair an axle was on my Ford LTD that I bought off of x-brother in law for $100. Back then it was rear wheel drive and U-joints. I never will forget looking in my rear view mirror travelling down I-95 after I stepped on the gas and noticed the car engine accelerated but not the car. As I was looking in the mirror thinking what the Hell is wrong with my car now? I see something going end over end, doing flips through traffic behind me. Hmmm, I was wondering, what the heck was that doing in the road.. I see this black pole looking thing going end over end, spinning and rolling like a mad top. I watched as It did a flip right over top of some ladies car behind me narrowly missing her. Other cars behind her swerving to miss it as it continued on. I didn't know what to think, somebody left their trash in the road or something. Finally I had to pull over. I'm looking all over the car, not even a clue. Finally I look and see "hey where's my drive shaft...?" "Oh dang !"

Jorge M Cisneros harbor freight has a strong half inch Impact wrench at around 90 bucks. I just did my Honda accord.

When I had to step up the torque after breaking my 1/2" breaker bar, I got a 3/4" T-handle and used my 4 foot jack handle as an extension. Got a 3/4" drive socket too, and it was unstoppable. If that doesn't work, a torque multiplier with a 58:1 mechanical advantage would be the next thing to try, although it would need some improvised bracing to work, since most of those are meant for lug nuts on truck and RV wheels with exposed lugs, and not cars. The Ratchet Helper torque multiplier gives a 5:1 multiplier with a more universal bar, and is good for 500 ft-lbs.

Hey Eric,I've got some info to share. Recently I had to replace a passenger side axle on a 05 Nissan Maxima,well,,, I had a lot of fun beating on the shaft for some time as I saw on KZbin. Hey ! the 05 Maxima has a plate behind the bracket that supports the shaft...DUH !!! Removing this bracket is none too easy as you would have to remove the water pump ,extra work if you want to do it. One solution,replace the axle up to the grease cup,re grease and install new boot...works fine. Enjoy your videos,keep 'em coming.

I know I'm late to the party, but I am about to find out if I made that mistake. When replacing control arms, sway bar links, and wheel/hub assembly, my friend and I may have caused something to disconnect between the cv axle and some internal part. I am pulling the CV axle this week to see if that's the issue. I learned a terrible lesson about being careful around the half shafts. They may have flared out too much when we were installing the new parts.

+clasicradiolover I've got a Craftsman 19.2V. You wouldn't get that hub nut off with it. It just can't produce the torque you need for high torqued parts. Mine won't even take the lug nuts off the wheel of my Chevy 3500.

I might be wrong since I'm learning as well but I believe that is so the nut doesn't move. Kind of the same function as the pin does on the lower control arm.

It's called "staking". It prevents the nut from unscrewing.

I'm new to cars, but I have a technical background. When I push and pull the Drive Axle, looking in the direction of the lugs, there is some play. I hear some clacking sounds when going over small bumps. It doesn't make a difference if I'm turning. There's no play when I jack up the wheel and check at 12/6 and 3/9 o'clock. Could that be an issue? It's been difficult to locate the noise. I have a subscription to ALLDATAdiy, so I can find the resources if I figure out where it's coming from. Thanks!

I've got the same problem. I am wondering if it could be the axle. I replaced the struts, upper ball joints and still bumping around. I am doing the lower ball joints this weekend. I will try to remember to let you know if that does it. I replaced them a couple years ago but with crappy one and the sound seemed gone for about 6 months and now it is back worse than ever. You might want to double-check your exhaust pipe mounts too. Sometimes those can make a bigger racket than you would think if a bolt is bumping into the undercarriage. Good luck.

I put my fat 250 pound ass on the craftsman breaker bar and the square drive snapped right off. Heated the nut with a mapp torch and nothing. Finally had to cut the friigin thing off with a dremel

I'm 130 lbs and didn't have any problems using a breaker bar without having to stand on it. Just give it a good tug and make it your bitch.

schwabentutorials It gets easier the more times you do it, every technician has their own method but I like to slide the shaft spine into transmission and can feel the clip give a little and then push it in. It also helps to make sure its going in perfect straight and no weight on from axle hub side dangling I hold it up perfectly level before forcing in. That just my opinion and works for me.

schwabentutorials, I did a Dodge Neon 2001 yesterday. By no means am I a mechanic at all but the trick for me to get it on was exactly how he explained it in the video. Turn it back and forth and wiggle it up and down until you feel it grab and then wind up and push it in, but it is also quite possible that the hole is bore a little bit more on different vehicles. I actually had a harder time of getting it out because I didn't have a pry spot...I wacked it with the claw end of the hammer on the u-joint and then it came off!

+schwabentutorials No, I had a horrible time with it, a friend with a car lot towed it in, put it up un a lift and pry bar-ed the hell out of it to get it in. (It was 5 degrees in my driveway when I was trying to do it, might have been part of the trouble) SOLUTION: on the other side shaft, I took the new c clip off and used the c clip from the old axle. Still took pressure, but went in.

I just did a CV axle on my truck for the first time, the inner joint was severely rusted onto the shaft. I tried every trick I could find on KZbin to try and get it out. I was prying on it and hitting it with a 4lb sledge for hours. I tried hooking a chain to it and pulling on it with a floor jack, I went and bought a slide hammer with the vice grip attachment. I cut grooves into it so I could hook onto it with the 3 jaw slide hammer attachment, I put a come-a-long on a pry bar to maintain force against it, heated it with a torch, and used a slide hammer at the same time this thing did not budge it was really stuck. My final and successful trick was to cut the thing off with an angle grinder! I accidentally cut the splines a little bit, hopefully this doesn't cause me problems in the future.

A tip for stubborn old axles that won't pop past the C ring when trying to remove: Take a 2-3' piece of steel cable, 1/8" with a small loop on one end. Have a loop on the other end as well. Put one loop through the other to form a noose with a loop big enough to slip over the cv axle. Put it behind the large end of the axle sticking out of the trans. Put a pry bar through the small loop and pop it towards you puling away from the vehicle. This worked so good on a 99 corolla where the only pry spots were those shallow grooves most use to pry against. The bulky end is sort of recessed and this trick worked perfectly.

Great video and camera angles for views man! I hate shaky camera lessons. For anyone reading too, if you have someone that can hold down the break while you unscrew the axle nut, you can get it off as well. This method would work best if you are alone working on the car; which is 99.7% of the time the case for most anyways.

I'm sure someone mentioned this already. I really recommend a 3/4" drive if you can find one. I've broken several 1/2" craftsman breaker bars extending them the way you show. After I returned the 3rd warrantied item they asked never to come back. Just FYI!!! nice video

When hammering an axle out of the hub as Eric does with or without the axle nut in place. Its a good preventive measure to install all lug nuts on to the wheel studs, so as to not damage those studs in the event of a rogue hammer strike.
