Great video. However, a few notes from my experience following this video. 1) The axle nut can be removed with a 36mm socket 2) Unless your vehicle has been driven where there is NO snow, or it is one that has hardly ever been driven in rain, "just tapping" on the back of the hub assembly will NOT loosen it. Mine was so corroded I had to "tap" it rather strongly until I could get a small pry bar wedged behind it. By tap, I mean strongly persuade with a sledge hammer... 3) Good luck removing the axle bolt with this method. Placing the nut back on and hitting it to try and pop it out of the hub assembly is not as easy you made it look. In addition, you risk damaging the threads on the nut or bolt. I had to rent a puller tool to get mine to pop free. It will run about $30 at any Autozone. 4) Make sure you use High Temp/Brake Grease to lube the boot pins. Run-of-the-mill grease will burn up. You'll smell it, trust me. 5) Pay attention to which boot pin goes where if you choose to grease them. They are slightly different (one has a rubber seal). Overall the video was a big help, but I wanted to make note of these few issues I ran into while replacing my hub assembly for anyone else willing to try.

Also note that using an impact wrench to re-install the axle nut can damage or reduce the life of your brand-new bearing. This should only be done with a torque wrench.

I have replaced the front wheel bearing on my G6 twice now, thanks to the guidance from your excellent video. However, each time I had an issue with the brake backing plate. It must have been slightly distorted at sometime in the past so that on reinstallation it just touched the brake rotor ever so slightly. That only became evident after the job was finished and I took it for a test drive. I suggest a caution to put two bolts on the rotor and turn it by hand in the secured position to verify it turns freely. It took me a while to figure out where the scraping was coming from and needed me to remove the caliper mount to neatly tap back the plate in the right places, no small task after completion.

Just did this with the help of your vid. Rented a torque wrench. Bought two hubs,a 10" extention and a 36mm socket. They cost far less than if a mechanic did it. Thanks!

I've never done anything this in depth on a car, and it's been difficult for me to find reliable video tutorials on my specific car. I'm amazed that you had the same exact 2007 G6 that I have... Haven't been this lucky in other tutorials yet. But at least I got this one!!

Pretty good tutorial. I think the biggest difference between this video and the average do it yourself type person out there is you aren't giving the old wheel bearing a couple of little taps. You should use a 5 pound sledge and pound the wheel bearing until it breaks apart from the housing. Make sure you are pounding the hub from the inside of the car out. Giving it a few knocks on the edge to try to loosen some of the rust just won't cut it. Don't be afraid to use some muscle, if it's seized on there, you'll need it. I did this whole job with hand tools. It's very doable. Couple of hints. If you don't have air tools, getting the axle nut off can be tricky if you have premium wheels. My Axle Socket wouldn't fit through the hole while the tire was on. Little trick, grab your spare from the trunk, throw that on, lower the car down so you can break that nut free. Raise it back, remove the spare and you are good to go. The Clips for the ABS sensor that came with this product wouldn't clip into the ABS sensor mount. They just wouldn't click. I'd recommend holding on to the old ones and simply re-using them. (I purchased this part from 1AAuto), Overall, toughness scale, they are right, it's a little harder than changing a tire if you are willing to give that wheel bearing some solid blows.

If you are replacing the hub anyway use a long screwdriver, prybar, etc next time with the wheel off place that between two of the lugs to keep the hub from turning while you break it loose with a breaker bar. Also helps to torque it properly on reinstallation unlike the mechanics that just drive it home with an impact

Mine was stuck on there pretty good. I had to use a chisel to separate the hub from the housing it fits into. The seal that houses the ABS sensor separated from the bearing hub assembly. I pounded it out the front by using a punch.

Great video. I replaced my hub assembly, but mine came with the new sensor also. I extracted the old assembly but the old sensor did not come out, so I plied the old out and installed the new hub with new sensor. Everything seems to be working fine but after putting around 20 miles on the new hubs the abs light has come on. Any ideas on how to reset.

Might want to check out the brake splash guards (dust shields) that were on there behind the rotors. Oftentimes these get bent out of shape and scrape against the back of the rotor causing unwanted noise and premature wear.

How do you know when it's time to change the wheel bearings? Will there be a noise? Will your braking become bad? I hear like a grinding noise whenever I make a turn, is it the wheel bearings or the tie rods?
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 6 жыл бұрын
+Paul Williams The most common symptom will be noise. A growl will start happening around 30 mph and grow louder the faster you go. You can also test the wheel for excessive play by jacking up only one wheel, and wobbling it back and forth. www.1aauto.com
