Hammer swing may cause sparks in spite of brass punch. Best to use channel lock pliers to remove locking ring.

Suggest using wood rod or stick versus metal punch to eliminate risk of spark.

I had 0 luck with brass punch on mine. I ended up ordering the tool. It was still a bear to get off and on. I think the 18 dollar tool for the removal was well worth it for this car.
