Garage Door Rollers are one of the key components to keep your garage door functioning smoothly and increasing the life of the garage door and garage door opener. Garage door rollers run in the tracks to help hold the door in the proper position or alignment. The smoother the roller operates the less resistance while opening or closing the garage door. There are many types and strengths of garage door rollers.
The rollers themselves can be made of steel (with or without ball bearings), plastic (without ball bearings) and nylon wrapped steel rollers with ball bearings and totally sealed ball bearings. The standard sizes for the wheels are 1″ inch, 2″ inch and 3″ inch. Most standard residential rollers are 2″ inch, which actually measure 1 3/4″ inches.
The stems which the wheels attach to can be made of steel, zinc plated steel or stainless steel and come in different lengths and diameters for residential and commercial applications as well as rust proof/resistant types. Standard stem lengths are 4″ inch and 7″ inch and the standard stem diameter is 7/16th” inch.

Before you take a hinge off, mark its position with a sharpie (felt pen) to put it back in exactly the same position. They are adjustable up and down, you want it back where it was.

On all mine, the bottom hinge screw hole is not slotted, just a hole. Installing that screw first ensures proper alignment.

Thank you for a straight forward, no BS how to video. I did this on a 35 year old door. I cleaned the years of gunk out of the tracks and replaced the roller with the Z rollers. Using another video I adjusted the chain tension. It is now so quiet when it goes up and down it’s like having a brand new door…total cost $30 for 10 rollers. Thank you, Thank you

So I watched this after I did my install, great tip on the bending of the track. I took mine off like you did at first except I left the top screw in each bracket and moved the brackets over as they pivoted on the top screw to remove the rollers. I lifted the door all the way up and removed the bottom bracket with no issues as there was very little tension on them. The top bracket has a single screw on top you can remove so you don't have to remove the whole bracket like you did so your way with the track bend and my way with the top bracket single screw.

The last example for replacing the rollers was to bend the metal track that guides the rollers outward. Once the new rollers are installed you have to "re-bend" that track back in to be parallel so the rollers will stay in. @@xMissPriss09x

Before you start bending the track try rolling the door all the way up and see how much slack there is in the cable. I tried the method demonstrated in this video and it is not as easy as it looks, especially if there is very little clearance between the outside of the track and adjacent walls. It is hard to get enough leverage. Also, examine the bottom bracket. On my doo,r the cable bracket is bolted to the door and the roller bracket is bolted to the cable bracket so I was able to remove the roller bracket without unbolting the cable bracket.

After disabling the grave doors electrical power. Raise the door alway up past is upward rest position. It can never pushed past its upward rest position. Have someone keep the door pushed up. This will put enough slack in the cable to remove the lower brack and replace the bottom roller. I perform this proverdure by myself.

Great video - thanks! Got the top 4 per side replaced by just unscrewing the bolts. Wasn't able to get the bottom two out with the prying method. Maybe I'm too weak or maybe I didn't bend it out far enough. I assume leaving these two bottom ones in is not an issue?

Great video, but it is not necessary to bend the tracks and permanently affecting their reliability. There should be enough slack in the cable for the bottom rollers when door is fully open to safely remove the bottom bracket without bending metal. If there isn't, you can simply lift door all the way to top, disengage carrier, and remove the bottom rail section. Then carefully lower the door and you will be able to slip out the old roller and replace with new one. Push door back up, reattach lower rail and done.

Hmm the tracks rebend right back to original position. I will continue doing this over removing the bottom rail or bottom bracket cause it works great, channel locks work good. Also some doors have waaay more spring tension then others so be very careful removing that bottom bracket....

I just purchased a set of dura lift rollers, I noticed my old metal rollers have a type of bushing in the side of the roller, I am guessing it prevents too much movement of the door, I am worried that the duralift rollers might bind up in the hinge, they don't have this type of side bushing. I hope this makes sense, any type of lubrication on the hinge?

When the garage door is up there is little to no tension on the bottom bracket. It’s just the weight of the spring. Why not unbolt the bottom one when the door is up? Just wondering. Thanks.

Our door sounds like a freight train. It's actually two doors, and they are both obnoxiously loud. After watching this video, I went to the garage to see what kind of rollers were on there currently. They are black. Are they black because they're steel or are they black nylon? How can I tell? Also, for lubricating the hinges, is white lithium grease the same as silicone? Oh, and my doors are solid wood, so are nylon ones strong enough??? Maybe since they're half-doors it'll be ok? Thanks so much.
