Two things....First, you had some good luck cutting that pipe. I use the same blades and it often takes me as long to get a cut started into the cast iron as it did for you to cut that entire piece. I did see someone else using Diablo thick metal blades recently and may give them a try next time I have to cut cast iron. Second, I do not understand why people watch videos like this and then have to leave snarky-a$$ comments. They have no idea that the client just needed a short-term fix, but yet they feel the need to rip the person who posted the video. You did what the client needed/wanted, and it worked. That's all that matters. I guess some people are so insecure in life that they have to berate others to make themselves feel better. That has to be a great way to live.

So the PVC is the same diameter as the cast iron, and you just butt the sections together and the rubber sleeves and clamps will keep it from leaking?

The pipes are slightly different in size, but the Fernco fitting is designed to go from cast iron to pvc. They work very well, with no leaks

Some areas have fireproof and environmental requirements for building, so they require to use cast iron pipe and the copper pipe for water. You cannot put the pvc or abs pipes on the cast iron pipe. and that work temporally fix the problem. The cast iron pipe is over 50 years and rotten inside.

Plumber here-Sorry, but Fernco clamps aren’t allowed inside of the building envelope- only the stainless steel banded style is approved. And as others have said, it looks like the crack is fully into the hub. Should have gone one further.

Looks like the crack went all the way into the hub. That piece you left (if it's cracked) will fail.
@everythingrc31272 жыл бұрын
One question can you weld it or would it be better to cut behind the hub ?
@rogermccaslin59632 жыл бұрын
@@everythingrc3127 I'm not a welder but from what I've heard, cast Iron need to be preheated before welding so that would probably be an issue that would make welding impractical. Besides that, the cast iron is cracked because it's failing as a whole. By that I mean the entire length of pipe will crack in a relatively short amount of time. Same goes for fittings. It makes more sense to replace the failed part than try some questionable spot repair when you are going to have more failure in the near future.

Fernco couplings legal anywhere?

@@ozarkhandyman7031 The reason codes require the no-hub couplings which are Ferncos with a metal shield is that the unshielded ones can droop, and mice love to eat through the rubber. @@darringyurich5672 The ones with the metal exterior lining would be best. This would last for years but the system would not ridged and self bracing. That could lead to other more expensive parts of the system failing and needing to be replaced. The repair here was likely under $40.00, if you already owned the saw.
@kiwiswat2 жыл бұрын
@@darringyurich5672 you need a Proflex that allows PL to CI or reverse. The ProFlex ones show what material you can connect on both sides. It usually says XHCI (extra heavy cast iron), CI (cast iron), PL (Plastic which is PVC and ABS), ST (Steel) and CL (Copper). In short they are shielded couplings. Dont mix them with the no hub couplings as they are meant for CI to CI.
