How to Replace MG Midget Air Filters

Another video in the saga of servicing your mg midget and in this episode its all about replacing your air filters! This could be one of the easiest jobs on the midget to do. Its all accessible, parts aren't too expensive and you get a real sense of satisfaction when done!
Please note, you can gently tap the back plates back on, or they will press into place, when screwing the bodies back to the carbs! In theory, but i've found this to be hit and miss!

Another good and simple video. It's often the simple stuff that gets forgotten. I would just say that you need to be careful not to over tighten any bolts on the carbs as they are made of a farily soft allow that can strip quite easily. Just nip them up and don't heave on the spanner.

Cool video it's nice to see what the original stuff looks like. My mg has that updateded single 2 barrel carburetor. I'm also thinking about turbocharging the little 1275 to get some extra pony's out of her. What do you think?

I would look at fitting a good quality modified head with a decent exhaust and rejetting the carbs before getting into turbos. There are lots of good kits around that give you all the stuff you need. Turbos sound like a great idea but open a huge can of worms and cost a fair bit of dosh. You can get quite a bit of power out of the A series without a turbo.

Corbin you legend. I have little to no knowledge on pimping the cars power. I've seen there's a great book on tuning the A series engine by a chapp called David Vizard. Might be worth a butchers

Save your money. These motors were never designed to be turbocharged. You can go with a basic simple conversion, but to do that right will require lower compression pistons, and it likely won't have any sophistication, like anti-knock built-in, to prevent excessive boost from blowing up your engine. They might have some sort of boost pressure release, but do you know where to set it so it won't blow? It won't take much to over-stress it...! You can go with a more sophisticated conversion, and hopefully that will have computer-monitored sensors to regulate boost and ignition timing to reduce the stress. But again, you can't raise power much before reliability becomes (even more of) an issue. There's lots of modern turbocharged sporty cars that are engineered from the start with tougher engines and drive trains to take the higher power turbocharging can provide. Those are more likely to provide far more sporty performance you can rely on.

Got pancake filters on the 1100 Midget. Plenty of faff cleaning and oiling the sponges.

@@AndysMGAdventures The jury's out. I reckon it runs a bit fluffy but everything else is okay so I could do to try a proper set and see if there's any difference. I'd prefer a traditional set anyway as opposed to this space age stuff. ;-)

The worst vehicle I ever owned was a 1967 MG Midget. Just looking at the state of design of these air filters brought back memories of the lack of reliability and maintenance horrors I had to endure. Paper gaskets that had to be scrapped off (risking chunks falling into the carburetors...) and two separate filters to buy for such a small engine when most cars need one, filter housings so tight that they have to be hammered back together(!!!), are just some of the 'quirks' I'm glad I'll never have to face again. There's so many far more sophisticated and reliable small sporty vehicles, from Miata MX5s, Honda 2000s, to VW Golf GTI or R versions. All modern proven designs with proven reliability - and bonus - far better performance! MG Midget owners must be masochists... 😁
