Here is a video tutorial on how to change the oil on your Dodge Caravan 3.3L V6 between the years of 2001-2010. This was a very aproachable repair that really anyone can do with a drain pan and a 16mm wrench. Thank you so much for watching!

Put oil in the filter before you install on the engine. This way when you start the vehicle after completing the oil change you don't have to wait for the filter to fill up with oil. This is known as a dry-start. This is important to do. Also, you put oil on the filter o-ring so it comes off easier on next change.

Great video, always change my own oil .I haven't done my caravan yet just got it ,but thanks to you I now know where everything is located. Also I will use the oil indicated on the fill cap as you said for my replacement. Thanks so much Dale ps should drain plug gasket be replaced each change or just inspect it to see if it's in good shape.

Great video. Used to change the oil in all my cars and wives cars for years but it's been years. heh "years" Couldn't find the nut to release the oil easily on my 2001 Dodge Caravan so decided to watch this video. Would have forgotten to put oil on the rubber contact point of the filter before installing it. And replacing the spacer ring for the oil pan nut is something I've never done in my life. Used to be they weren't plastic though, ....rubber. And wouldn't have had a clue that it is threaded. Also 16 mm socket is going to save me trouble as well. I was going to use my trusty crescent wrench. Oh, and I would have only put in 4 quarts of oil too. Glad I watched this video. Cheers, J. Noe And my 2001 engine sounds a lot better than that 2008 engine (had to brag a little bit, it's one of my foibles in life)

@@2carpros Yeah, based on your ability to fix and take care of your vehicles it had to be because of all the hard miles put on your van. Not to point a finger or be judgmental in any way here since I got so much from your video here to help me change my oil for the first time in probably well over 2 decades "but" heh you just knew this was coming. Don't worry it's not bad at all. I wanted to let you know that my 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan does not have a 16 mm nut on the oil pan. It's much smaller than that. I just used a crescent wrench so I can't tell you what size the nut is on my vehicle. And I did go to the auto parts store and try to buy that threaded piece to go with the oil pan nut but he gave me a plastic spacer without threads. I didn't use it because something about plastic compared to rubber just seems inferior to me. And there was a rubber spacer with my nut anyway. Job done. Thanks again for your video. Cheers, J. Noe

Three questions; Does the oil need to be full synthetic, or is it okay to use conventional high mileage oil?. Also is it really necessary to replace the washer on the oil pan bolt? Is it OK to use Lucas oil stabilizer such as the full synthetic stabilizer since I heard that heavy duty stabilizer might cause high viscosity to the engine? One thing I do know is I'm suppose to use 20% lol
@2carpros
@2carpros 5 жыл бұрын
1. I would use full synthetic for longevity of oil changes. "high mileage" oil has an additive that swells seals which I don't like. 2. Yes replace the washer. 3. Would not use any kind of stabilizer, just synthetic oil. Thanks for watching!

@@2carpros You're welcome and thanks for the feedback. . Some auto places told me since it's a 2008/older engine that a high mileage/thicker 5w20 would be needed either blended, or conventional.. Thanks and I'll go full synthetic cause my last two changes been a synthetic blend. I bought the van recently from a private dealer so I didn't know

Since the Oil Filter is pointing downward, wouldn't it be easier to fill the filter with Oil before re-installing? I would think that it would allow the air to purge more quickly and give you a more accurate idea of the oil level on the Dipstick during your initial check. Just a thought.

A few things that weren’t mentioned. First, when tightening the drain plug DO NOT crank the crap out of it and strip it. (Very common) When in doubt you can look up the torque spec and use a torque wrench. The most important step which wasn’t mentioned is… Once you are complete, start engine and use a light and check for leaks! I’ve personally had those fast lube places forgot to tighten my drain plug, they barely started the threads by hand. Yep, I lost all the oil within a mile from the store and my engine seized! There was an oil trail from the shop to where my engine splattered all over the road! Costly mistake for them! Cross threaded or overnighted drain plug or filter can cause leaks because gaskets got smashed, pinched or cracked. ALWAYS CHECK FOR LEAKS! Oil change 101! Lastly, if you spilled oil on the engine, wipe it off! If you don’t it will sit there smoldering and smoking and easily ignite. Especially if it gets on the exhaust manifold or pipes. Safety people… Safety! Many first timers are watching these videos and these are things you NEED to know. Seasoned mechanics get cocky because they’ve done a bazillion oil change and skip these important steps. None of it is rocket science and is common sense but it should still be mentioned at least. My high school auto shop teacher would not have let this vehicle leave our shop until all of this was done. This guy would have gotten a “D” at best for the day. 😂 Btw, channel locks are great and all but they do have “oil filter wrenches” to remove filters. Channel locks are only needed if the last guy completely overnighted the living crap out of the filter or it’s been on the car for a decade. The wrenches are much easier and safer especially on a fairly hot engine in case it slips off. You don’t want to hit a catalytic converter with your hands or arms. SAFETY!!

Yes, it may " recommend 5w-20 but that's not the oil this engine or the slightly larger 3.8 was designed for. These engines were made to run on 10w-30 for hot weather and 5w-30 for cold weather. Both the vans and the Jeep Wranglers using the 3.8 version using 5w-20 they would oil or blow the engine. You are one of the lucky ones. Great vid BTW.
@zachelder8525
@zachelder8525 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, they should. 5W-20 is used for EPA and CAFE guidelines only! Many 3.3's and 3.8's burn oil or blow up using that thin oil. They were designed to run 10W-30 in summer and 5W-30 for winter. All crate 3.3's and 3.8's say 10W-30 on the oil fill cap.
