Hope you guys like today's boat upgrade! Don't forget to wait 24 - 48 hours after applying your decals before using your boat or applying any kind of protectants. Let me know if you have more decal applying tips :)
@jefflovinfishin6215 ай бұрын
This is literally the worst way to apply graphics. And there’s zero reason to wait 24-48 hours to do anything. But at least you got them on there 👍

Nice job Dan. Applying decals can be a frustrating adventure. I remember some of the guys at the shop applying decals , always a few choice words thrown in 😀.

Was in the automotive business for many years, you might try some plastic razor blades for removing the decal glue once softened, we used wd-40, and the goo gone as well
@richardmajewski3815 Жыл бұрын
What works even better for removing the old glue is using contact cleaner. I tried it and it made the job so much easier.

Great job! I suggest trying pure limonene instead of Goo-Gone next time you need to remove an adhesive like this. The active ingredient of Goo-Gone is limonene, but it's diluted with petroleum oils, so it's messy and way less effective.

It usually does great but this old baked on stuff was resisting everything! I did use Iso at the very end to make sure it was ready for the decals though :) Thank goodness for Goo Begone lol

Brake cleaner is the fastest solvent to remove the adhesive. Spray on and wipe off.
@DanRichardFishing2 жыл бұрын
So here's the issue I have with brake cleaner... yes it works well and is generally safe on painted surfaces BUT it's a nightmare if you get it on powder coated parts. And the trim motor housing and cylinder as well as other parts directly below the outboard are powder coated as well as a lot of boat trailers. Also acetone is really strong and I would rather not use it unless I absolutely have no other choice and I am almost 100% certain that all brake cleaners contain acetone. It's just too strong for the job for me to recommend it and I don't want to suggest something that could ruin's someone painted surfaces and get yelled at lol

Finally got up enough courage to actually apply the new decals on my Mercury 150 XR6 and after much procrastination, I finally got it done and I can take great pride in doing this myself and it turned out to be easier than I thought it would be. The main thing for me was doing all the prep work and getting the surface prepared. Once that was done applying the decal was fairly easy. I decided to take the cowling off the motor and move it to a tabletop outside so I could move around the entire outside of the unit. Thanks again for you video on how to accomplish this. I thought I would need to have the cowl repainted, but after the prep work the luster came out so I didn't need to do this at all.

Use a citrus based cleaner, then residues are gone in "one-two-three"....

If you scrape with fingernails, be sure to scrape only in areas the decal will cover up. Even fingernails will scratch the finish. I know from previous experience. 😒

Acetone works best
@DanRichardFishing2 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of using Acetone on painted plastic, especially black. I'll always avoid it unless nothing else is working.
@KAONANAONA2 жыл бұрын
@@DanRichardFishing My engine cowl is gelcoat fiberglass. Acetone worked great without damage. I also use it with some rubbing compound and a cotton ball to remove painted on numbers and graphics.
@yvanmtl23 жыл бұрын
Poor Dan... it does exist a decals disk removal. it's easier. it doesn't damage the paint. Body shop use it. you can find in your local autoparts. here an example : kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHXKcnp4qZiEjtE Yvan.
@DanRichardFishing3 жыл бұрын
Okay I did some research on these discs. These are absolutely not for use on plastic, aluminum, or raw paint (no clear coat). It actually says it right on the manufacturer instructions for these products. So definitely do not use these on the cowl of your motor or on your aluminum boat. Also I just got off the phone with the owner of the number one vinyl wrap company in Montreal (MTL Wrap) and they use a heat gun and steam to remove decals, they would never touch a vehicle with one of these discs. BTW did you see the comments on that video link? Tons of people saying do not use that, use a heat gun lol! Ah the joys of making how to videos... lol!

Hey Dan, great video! Wondering how hot your heat gun is?
@DanRichardFishing2 жыл бұрын
I used it on the lower setting so if I were to pass it over my hand it doesn't really burn my hand but you definitely feel heat. On the high setting I couldn't really hold it near my hand without burning myself and it could probably start melting the motor cowling lol. Better to use less heat and just slowly work it.

Hi Paul, I just checked with the decal maker, but I believe all vinyl decals are applied wet.
