JIm, I have a 2010 Toyota Camry. The sensor light came on. I had all the tires' pressure checked including the spare. The mechanic determined that the at least one of the sensors is bad. I had all the four tires sensors replaced since the life is around 7 years, and I have driven for 12 years. The mileage when the sensor light turned on is about 107,000. After replacing the sensors, the mechanic asked me to drive around for some time for the computer to "learn" the new sensors and the light will go off. I have thus far driven about 4-5 miles. I hope after some more driving it would turn off. I wish I had seen your video wherein you had programmed the new sensor so that the computer would recognize the new one as if the old one. Thank you sir. Obviously this case is application specific (replace a system already in place with valve TPMS). But it seems to me that if I were to choose from scratch what method to mount on my rims it is perhaps (and here is where I implore your expertise) better solution to mount metal belt TPMS in the center of the rim than this other system. Pros/Cons of both alternatives? I would also (guess) think that the metal belt acts as an antenna to ensure the sensor to controller connection can go through all that Faraday cage that is the chassis of the vehicle. Thanks

What can I do when I put my snow tires on it takes longer to program the computer & the 4 tires than it does to change the tires. They program the computer + all 4 wheels. there must be an easier way. Thanks Bruce

Looking at the Smart Sensor Pro+, those are very good sensors. I remembered we installed a set of those on a fleet of Ford Transits, already programmed by the wheel supplier, and they are quick to relearn with any TPMS scan tool. Great stuff, Jim.

good timing. i just bought today a tpms system for an old car, and the system is a total hack job. the valve stem guages dont sit right and will probably fly off. and the monitor screen just falls out of the cigarette lighter onto the floor. there has to be a better system out there.

@7:15 I think you can't quess on that torque, since over torquing might cause invisible damage to the metal nut. I've read there can develop micro cracks in that nut, and it can be a problem later (don't know how dramatic it will be, but maybe even a flat tire). The range is quite wide (fm 35 to 80 in-lbs). It is very hard to find that info on the torque. The best I found for our car (fm one chart online) is 49 to 66 in-lbs. Fortunately some sellers write the info on torque in instructions for the sensor. Now I make sure that the torque is known for the sensor I buy. Thank you for the informative film.

Thank you for the video. Have you seen the following situation: my sensor was replaced but the new sensor always comes ON (~30 seconds) after long time resting like parked overnight. The TPMS sensor light turns ON and OFF like all light at the initial reset but then turn ON for about 30 seconds after driving and then turn OFF. It never did it before the replacement of the sensor. However, my problem became more severe than I found that there was a slow leak around the valve. The dirt/corrosion around the rim hole prevented to have a good seal. I have a Lexus RX350 with the tire light on. I went to Big "O" tire and they used "Max" tire monitor to check the dead TPMS. So they replaced it with Max TPSM valve (purple color). But they were unable to turn the light off. Th3ey told me the computer in the car froze. I don't quite believe it. Any suggestion. Thanks.

Great video Jim. I have a 2015 Toyota Prius that I am trying to put together a full sized 5th (spare) tire and get set up with a 5th TPMS sensor. I was wondering if something like that would be possible for an auto shop to be able to program the 5th sensor for me. I realize it would be a bit more complicated than simply copying the ID# from an old sensor and programming the new since I would be adding a 5th new sensor to the computer. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

That is not possible unless it was set up from the manufacture for the 5ht sensor.

You would want 8 sensors and clone 4 of the sensors to match the other 4. That way the car will always see the same 4 sensor codes regardless of which set of wheels you install.

most likely you will need new sensors that work with Honda. each car manufacturers get tmps sensors supplied from different companies, and unlikely to be interchangeable, even among the car models that they make.

that fancy tpms scanner he has. you can take that scanner to each tire stem, and trigger the tpms sensor inside. if the sensor is defective, you won't get any reading from that tire.

If the light was not on before the tires were put on I would check to make sure that the tire installer did not damage them.

Yes. However there might be a slight problem. If it's aftermarket, then you have a chance to program it. If it's factory, you are suppose to get the sensor ID and rewrite the ecu by the OBDII port to have it updated with the new sensor install.

Are you sure that the numbers are exactly the same? Another problem that I had is sometimes one sensor is dead completely but when you put the tool near the sensor it will pick up another sensor nearby from the car you are working on. I would write down the number to make sure that all 4 are different . Good luck Jim

Tpms is federally mandated. It is against the law to disable it. You will have to live with the light or just remove its bulb.

Here is one for you. The Renault Zoe has TPMS sensors in factory wheels. I buy another set of wheels from another Zoe. Of course the computer does not like the new wheels. Can you without changing TPMS sensors exchange the computer or receiver to recognise the new wheels?

Then the lights stays on since the car can't sense the sensor being there. The sensors needs to be programmed either a copy of the old id or a new id has to be replaced over what is changed in the ecu in the car's brain by the OBDII port. Why would anyone install a sensor that they don't program it pair with the car.

Unfortunately, f***ing eBay has delivered to me sensors that match Focus III, by mistake. So, that's why someone could install not paired sensors to his vehicle.

Write to your state legislators, We need to force automaker to include diagnostic software into the now big entertainment system in the car or a simple rj45 jack and free software. We need a real right to repair for cars. Did you know in 2020 there will be YET another diasgnostic port, different for all automakets? It will be located behind the radio/system and most likely will require yet another several thousand dollar tool to fix these cars.

The tires "max pressure" is probably 44psi. What is the vehicles recommended pressure? Check the door frame. Use the door pressure for max tire life under normal conditions.

How long did you run the tire flat? That can also damage the sensor and rim.

Do not use brass plated valve cores in TPMS systems. This can cause galvanic corrosion. Only use nickel-plated valve cores in these systems.

you never go by the tire says for pressure. you go for what the vehicle says for pressure for all tires. that's why all tires say max pressure, but not what your vehicle says.
