MARK, you are SO RIGHT on NOT removing those strut bolts! I have had to sit here and argue with people on my axle videos because they comment and say it's better to remove it from the strut, and I had to actually sit there and explain to them why you are suppose to remove the lower control arm bolt. Some cars are adjustable at that point, and some are not, but even the ones that are NOT, if you remove those bolts, you still throw off the alignment. Great method!

Thanks Timmy! I know a bunch of people are going to disagree with both of us on this. Thanks for the positive feedback! I admit that I don’t always do things the right way, but in this case I have to stand firm and say again to leave those strut bolts alone! Lol!

If you go to Haynes, who has written car repair books for like 60 years they say remove the 2 strut bolts and leave the knuckle to pivot on the lower ball joint, watching this video you can see by leaving the knuckle on the strut he has to bend the axle to insert over the shaft with the clip because it needs to be a straight shot in not on an angle or the spline will bind on the clip, Haynes also says to have the opening on the clip facing at 6 o'clock while inserting I believe this is because there is less overlap at the section that is cut out because its gone and turned to the 12 o'clock it actually creates more over lap on the opposite side due to the cut out. But hell what ever gets the job done.

@@jaymortensen642 Just because it's in a book, doesn't mean it's the best method. Heck, the bible still states to stone a person to death in a case of adultery, and that book has been out MUCH LONGER than Hanes has been repairing vehicles, but you don't see MODERN people doing that today🤣🤣 KZbin is a prime example that people figure out "Tips & Tricks" that make a job a lot faster, and with the same results than a book or repair cd, but just as you were alluding to, it's all preference.

Just what I needed. I'm a DIYer with an impact wrench that is a bit too strong.. long story short I stripped the axle threading and have to replace this part. I was trying to do the lower ball joint! This is much easier than I thought it would be.

I got 253,000 miles on my 07 Sebring. Been having grinding noises when I turn left so I am replacing the CV soon. Thanks for the video!
@unclemarksdiyauto
@unclemarksdiyauto 2 жыл бұрын
Grinding or humming might be the wheel bearing. Usually the cv joint will make loud clicking or knocking sounds especially as you do a very sharp turn. You could jack up both front wheels with the parking brake on and spin the wheel by hand. (This is check for the wheel bearing) See how each side compares to each other in sound. Also, usually a cv joint will start making noise because the boot has ripped open and grease is coming out and dirt is getting inside. This should be easy to see. Just some ideas Steve. All the best!
@Steve.Nguyen
@Steve.Nguyen 2 жыл бұрын
My issue is quite perplexing. I assume the wheel bearing is the same thing as the hub assembly, if so, that was my same initial though and I have replaced it. The noise is still there when I turn my steering wheel past 30 degrees. I also occasionally here a clunk from the same area of my car when I hit a bump or even when I start up my car (kinda like the engine is bumping into something as it starts). I’m not sure if the grinding and clunking noises are related but they do come from the same area (about under the passenger glove box). I have narrowed down the causes to the cv axle or rack and pinion. My hypothesis for the CV axle is that the inner joint is bad which does not produce the typical clicking that a bad outer joint produces. I also speculate that the clunking comes from the engine shaking and causes the play from the inner joint to make noise since the intermediate shaft is connected to the engine and is right next to the inner cv joint. Would love to hear your thoughts on this, thanks again!

@@Steve.Nguyen Good info Steve. I have owned front wheel drive cars since the the late 1980's. I have never replaced a inner cv joint or inner boot, but that is not to say that it can't be it. Usually when they click, they are clicking every rotation, and the faster you go, the faster the click. (And usually when turning, unless they are really bad, then could make noise when going straight, but again it should be a steady clicking) Saying that, what I think you are hearing and what you are actually hearing might be 2 different things. Wish I was there to hear it with you Steve. Keep me updated and you can always shoot me a email. (address is in the about section of my channel.

Yes, I am bad for skipping the gloves. On the new Grand Caravans, those 2 bolts don’t affect the alignment. It is fixed from the factory and if it’s out, a special kit has to be purchased to change the geometry.

A allen head socket would have been ideal for that ball joint to prevent it from spinning like you used the 8mm on the tie rod end.Quite an informative video and a great way to save money.For myself,over 300 dollars would be saved doing it myself.axle shafts are triple the price at my local garage...plus another 200 in labor...so yeah near 500 bucks or at least 400 to have this done...ouch!

@unclemarksdiyauto
@unclemarksdiyauto 6 ай бұрын
If your replacing the same hub again, might you have not torqued it to the right spec? Over torque, or under torque the bolt on the cv axle will cause stress on the hub bearing causing premature wear.

@@krashkwads4688 I believe the torque spec is 118 Ft Lbs for the cv nut. (Nut is one time use I believe) I will double check the specs to be sure. Just a few fl lbs either way could wear the hub bearing too soon. Let us know how it all goes,

I dont know why people remive the ball joint and tierod, more risk. Just pop the 2 bolts and nuts to strut and brackets holding the brake line and speed sensors. Thats it
@unclemarksdiyauto
@unclemarksdiyauto 2 ай бұрын
Because on some vehicles, (especially all the older ones), those 2 bolts adjust the camber and once messed with requires a wheel alignment, other wise your ties will wear out. So instead of chancing this is one that might mess with the adjustment, you do the safe thing & pop the lower control arm.
