This is the best thing I've found on replacing pocket doors, I have a home with the original doors from the 80s and they're super loud and get stuff. I was ready to rip them all out but I'm super happy seeing how straight forward this is.

Ron, Found your video very interesting and informative from the beginning on how you analyzed the problem, possible solution and the actual repair. Especially liked the section where you addressed the situation of being by yourself and tackled the problem of elevating the door with shims. Many of us DIYers don't have a helper at the time of the repair. Kudos to you ! Looking forward to your next video. Watch your Sunday morning shows!

Great video and the best I've seen on pocket doors. I have never done anything like this before and it gave me the confidence to give it a go. The section on repairing the dry wall was also very helpful and proved very straight forward. As mentioned in a previous comment, I did everything just as you said to do it. Thank you.

This is one way to do the job and, for most people, the best choice. I didn't want to open the wall which would require patching and painting. After a lot of research on the web, I found a process that didn't disturb the wall. I went to Lowes and bought a long flexible drill bit extension. You can get them in lengths of 36" to 72", and they'll accommodate a 3/16" bit. I used a #2 Phillips driver bit, which I had to grind down to have it fit in the extension. Then I removed the pocket door as Ron shows and used my flexible bit/driver setup, attached to a cordless drill, to remove the Phillips head screws holding the track inside the pocket. The track came out and I replaced it with a new track. The trick to replacing the new track was to cut the end of the new track that goes into the pocket, and make 90 degree downward fin to secure it against the vertical stud at the far end. I had to drill a hole in the fin and was able to secure it at the far end of the pocket with a wood screw. Also, I was able to drive in two additional wood screws in the track that fits into the pocket. You can drive in those screws at a slight angle without it affecting the operation of the track. The hardest part was making the flex drill bit / drive assembly.

When putting back the drywall, there was no mention of how deep you could make the backing or finding a screw length that wouldn't interfere with the operation of the door. Minor cosmetic annoyance versus practically rebuilding the entire thing, explains why most pocket doors I've ever come across have all these issues, or don't work at all.

@@catwoe5707 I ended up hiring a professional to do the job, because I realized that while I could do this, it was more valuable to me to spend the time I would have spent doing this doing something else. I could have done the project, but I don't think that it would have been as well-done as if I had simply hired a professional, since our first attempts at a new task are usually going to meet with unexpected problems and will lack on the execution side of things. Since this was a door in my home which would be visible to others, I figure that having it look good was more valuable to me than growing that skill set, which I will hopefully never have to use again. It was still valuable to know the process, because I had an understanding of what the job entailed and had some useful input while he was doing the job. I'm fine with this decision. We will never be able to master all of the skills we want to master in this life, because there's always a limiting factor. Sometimes that's time, or money, or skill, or resources, or sometimes just enthusiasm. We focus on what's important to us and let others, who focused on the other stuff, do what is important to them. Thanks for checking in.

I absolutely loved this video! Your instruction has convinced me to replace my pocket door. We have a 30+ year old one that is very rickety and sometimes we get "stuck" in the bathroom and can't get out because the door won't open! My question is: Where can I buy the fancy track and ball bearings you used? And, can I buy a regular door and attach it instead of reusing the flimsy old pocket door we have now? The wall is completely open right now so will be easy to do if I can find the right parts. Many thanks!

I find that a utility knife works very well for cutting a work opening or for adding a switch or receptacle box in a wall. Very little dust or debris and the kerf of the knife is much less than a saw. A knife with a sharp blade and a metal straight edge works wonders with very little clean up required.

Was considering replacing the pocket door and installing a barn door, but now wondering if I'm better off just replacing the hardware on the existing pocket door. Johnson Series 100 is a double roller track kit that fit the pocket doors I replaced at my home. I found them a Home Depot. I wanted a smoother door movement, and originally had single roller wheels on a narrow track. The Johnson Series 100 has double, side by side, rollers that seems a lot smoother and quieter when the door moves in and out of the pocket.

Question. Do the replacement wheels go in the same direction or opposite directions. Meaning the components have two wheels on one side and one on the other side. When I install them do I keep them the same, with the sides with the two wheels on the same side of the track. Or do I make it opposite?
