How to Replace Power Steering Box in a Pontiac Firebird or Chevy Camaro Chevelle Nova PART 5

How to replace the power steering box in an early Pontiac Firebird or Chevy Camaro in our Muscle Car Build Project. This same power steering box can be found in a ton of General Motors cars and trucks such at the Chevy Nova, Chevy Chevelle, Chevy Pick Up Truck, Pontiac GTO, Pontiac Le Mans, and more!
This job takes about 30 minutes if you have all the tools you need, mostly just hand tools except for the pitman arm puller which you can rent for FREE from your local auto parts store.
This thing is HEAVY, so have a friend on hand to help you get it out of the muscle car, once out you will have to rebuild it or replace it.

Hi, take this from someone who has been working on F bodies for 35 years. Put that box in the trash and just get a remanufactured quick ratio from National Parts Depot. Rebuilding a steering box is not for the faint of heart.

I lost my steering on my 74 el camino. I thought it was the power steering pump that went out. Turned out to be the steering box instead, i can see fresh oil coming from the battom of the pitman arm area. Now i have to get this done soon.

Can you just take out the 1 bolt that holds the splined end of gearbox and not take out the ones for the ragjoint?

I have never seen a seized up gear box. That thing is a hot mess.

It must have had water/snow/ice get thru the bearing fitted hoses, when I took it apart to rebuild, couldn't even get it to full disassemble. lol tring to get car on the trailer and then how the hell I was going to get it off was at least a six pack of Coors Light. lol

I paid about $175.00 picked it up from Car Quest. These boxes are just about all the same, just look up your year and model and. you should be golden! Thanks for watching

Old video thats new to me. Good stuff man !! I had a red 67' Bird years back and recently inherited a 1970 Nova.. Basically the same gearbox swap. The Nova came with a manual box and was switched to power. Its a functoinal but debatable setup. Im pulling engine asap and when I do Im gonna install a new manual gearbox again. 1 less belt running and in the way.

If there is a lot of play in the steering could it also be a worn-out steering box, I have a 68 Camaro where I'm looking into replacing a steering box, my guess is I wore the steering box out moving it on tow trucks when it was broke down

I put a CP 500 steering box in my 67 Camaro. Fit like a charm. They are 360 bucks on summitt. FYI.

@@ArrowheadGarage i had another question. Ive been having oil pressure issues and did some research online. There is a hidden oil galley plug behind the plug of the rear of the motor. So i took out my motor and put the oil galley screw in and got good pressure. Do i need to put plug in the access hole again or can i leave it without the plug?
