Well I did it. I replaced the rack and pinion on my 4Runner as mentioned here in your comments section about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I literally had my laptop next to me as I replayed your video. Your torque specs call outs as you reassemble everything was indispensable and worked like a charm for me. My 4Runner came out great. Thank you, thank you , thank you. You are amazingly AWESOME.

Thank you very much for this great video! I called the local dealership and their estimate for this job was $1800 which meant it probaly would have been closer to $2000. After watching your video a few times, I decided to replace it myself. With some patience and many references back to the video, I was able to complete the Rack and Pinion replacement on my 1998 Toyota 4Runner over the weekend. The part and tools needed cost me about $600. The alignment afterwards cost me $120. Thank you very much for the knowledge and the huge savings!

Great video. I just replaced mine, and I'd like to leave a few notes other DIYers. Buy a return line end adaptor. I didn't because I excreted to reuse the old one. That mistake made the project take an extra day. Go ahead and take both skid plates off. This simple move makes the powersteering lines more easily accessible.

Being a mechanic and never doing one of these on a Toyota, your video is very detailed and instructive! Helped me do the job in about three hrs. Thanks for the video, and keep it up man!

Excellent video, it helped me do a job that it would cost me $1,200 at the shop. There are two things I would add to it: alternate ways to remove tie rod ends and removing the tin plate underneath for better visibility and access to nuts and bolts to be removed. Banging the tie rod ends with a hammer to cause them to drop didn’t work I had to borrow a tool from a friend to achieve this step, where I got stuck the longest trying to figure out how to remove them. And removing the tin plate completely made things a lot easier. Thank you for sharing this video!!!👏🏽👍🏽

This was a good crash course for me. A few yrs ago I had my old ‘99 RR body mated to a younger, rust free ‘01 rolling frame. Bought a new rack & pinion, in the quote my shop claimed I should get new outer tie rods. From this video, I’m really not seeing why. But I see I can pick them up much cheaper than what they tried to charge!

All I can say is buy OEM on this one. Aftermarket ones don’t last. Think I paid around 600.00 for steering gear. Along with OEM tie rods. Got 265,000 on my 2002. I plan on keeping this Houston beauty a longtime.
