This video will show you how to replace your rear brake pads on a 2018-2021 Honda Accord and Civic. It is very simple to do and only takes about 10 minutes or so per side. Thanks for watching!
* Be sure to engage the ebrake after replacing pads to set them. Doing one side at a time start to finish.

Thank you very much for probably the most helpful KZbin videos I've ever watched. I don't know the 0:11 1st thing about brakes but my son can over with his 2016 civic and we replaced the rear pads with needle nose pliers and all. No lights flashing and no more squealing. Keep the diy stuff coming. Saved a lot of money I don't have.

I'm glad you're spreading the word about how totally unnecessary it is to remove the back cover of the electronic parking brake unit to retract the piston. By turning the piston as you did, it performs the same function as if you had opened the back of the EPB unit and turned the screw by hand. I don't like the idea of opening the EPB and exposing it to possible contaminants. Either way will work, but it's a lot easier to just turn the piston. In my case, I used a piston rewind tool and once the piston stopped turning, I had to also retract the piston further straight back using a typical piston retraction tool to accommodate the new rotor/brake pads. The other 2 methods are to use a very expensive scan tool or hook up the EPB leads to a 12V battery, but why go through all that trouble when you can simply use a piston rewind tool or in your case, a pair of needle nose pliers. Bravo!

This guide was super helpful, I was able to repair my back breaks. I want to give advice to others. When tightening the piston, if you turn it all the way to the right (can no longer rotate) and the piston is still up, use a c-clap to push down the actual piston.

I performed the same procedure on my mom's 2019 Honda Accord, which has an electronic parking brake. However, her brake pads had worn down to the metal, necessitating a rotor replacement. I used a caliper push-back tool, and everything functioned correctly with no brake lights or issues. Soon, I'll be applying the same process to my friend's 2018 Honda Civic rear brake pads. I hope it works as smoothly as it did with my mom's 2019 Honda Accord. Hopefully, the brake light issue isn't inconsistent among some Hondas.

im glad i found this cause my rear pads are also about half way worn out at 17k miles. it seems that the accords use the rear brakes more to compensate for dipping in the front under heavy braking, so they wear out much faster in the back. ive been getting more into maintenance but wasnt sure how to do the rear brakes cause i knew that the e-brake requires some special tool or something. awesome to see its really that simple.

I just did my Rear Brakes on my 2018 Accord 2.0, I used your method with the needle nose pliers because I only have a C-Clamp and not a brake caliper tool. It worked perfectly when you get the hang of how to grip and hold the pliers to push and turn the piston in. I did actually remove the electronic parking brake actuator as well. Everything worked out 💯 nice smooth strong braking. I put this off for 6 months and was finally able to complete this from your video. Thanks bro 🙏

Great tutorial. The brake tool kits from Harbor Freight or Amazon really help things out. Like the creator said, once the piston stops spinning, you need to compress it the rest of the way in. The kits will have both adapters. Don’t use a C-Clamp to compress the piston or you’ll end up damaging the housing on the electronic parking brake. You really don’t even need to disconnect the wire from the caliber. There is plenty of room to work with.

@@camcoulter5993 exact same thing happened to me also at 34,000 miles - thought it was weird a rear brake went out before either of the fronts (although now I know front are bigger which makes sense); on the rear left the piston being out to far before taking pads out seemed to wear one of the pads completely down (past sensor) but other side was barely worn at all... 🤔

@@DanVilla7 First off, love the videos man - very clear and concise. I'm struggling hardcore with compressing a rear piston and made it worse by putting caliper back on car without pads to come back to after other wheels (turned car on and it reset it so it just fits the rotor barely 🤦🏻‍♂). I'm gonna reattach the black ebrake winder thing but when compressing should I have the car "completely off", "accessory mode/battery powers everything without engine", or "ignition/engine on"? I know doing anything with the handbrake in any of those modes is a bad idea before the new pads are on. BTW: I designed and 3D printed a tool and "V3" actually works REALLY well and should for anyone else with a 10th generation accord (i'm assuming '19-'21 probably also have same brake cylinder). I used PLA to print and works just fine but if you want something that doesn't misshape/wear down then I'd say use ABS, even though PLA has a higher tensile strength. I'll drop github link to .stl file. I just used a Creality Ender 3 (only $170 - could not recommend enough, should be a common household appliance) and it takes less than 2 hours to print

I would like to mention that this may be a case by case scenario. I have a 2018 accord touring, for what that’s worth. I twisted and screwed the piston in as far as I could until it stopped and wouldn’t turn anymore, as you mentioned in the video. However when I went to reinstall the caliper it occurred to me that the piston still needed to compress at least another 3/8” to be able to fit back on. I had to hook up an inverter to run the motor in, then push the piston in by hand. I had to do this on both sides, which worked fine. It’s unfortunate I had to take this extra step but it still worked out

This video was so much better than others I’ve seen, almost went to a mechanic until I found this video. However, my “brake” light came on and “brake system” light as well and the electronic park brake switch is flashing as well. Anyone else have this issue and anyone have a fix for it?

You got those pads at a good time. Its out of stock in alot of places, on line as well.... I called My dealer today and they have none, and they told me only one other dealer in my area has them in house. The pads are on back order until further notice , that's what the dealer told me .front pads are easier to find , not the backs.

Wow crazy. When I called the dealer by me they said they had plenty in stock. I guess I got lucky.

Changed my brake pads today (front and rear) and all went well. Your video was the most helpful of all that I'd seen. Question: My rear calipers and rotors (both sides) were hot to the touch after about a 20-minute drive. Fronts were fine. Is there a like a break-in period or something after which they will return to normal temps? I don't think I forgot anything - and NO parts left over!
@DanVilla7

Thanks! The rears seem to just engage more than the fronts for some reason. I still haven't changed my front pads. My past vw was the same changed the rear way before the front so seems pretty normal for rears to hear up more during normal driving. I. Aure if you were doing hard braking the front would have been very hot
