I got mission accomplished on both doors. I didn’t replace the entire cable assembly, but replaced the degraded and crumbling cable housing ends with the part from Doorman. I stripped one of the Torx bolts badly enough that I went to a dealership to get a replacement…at $8 each. Overall not a terrible job, and now my doors work on my 20-year-old truck.

Great video. I'm having the exact same problem with my '99 Ford f150 so I'm really glad that you produced this. My door is stuck in the closed position as you've mentioned earlier and my only question would be what happens if the cable breaks off the upper latch? How do you get the door open? In other words, if you can't get at the latch, how are you able to open the door? In your example you just showed where you would pull the cable and it would open the latch. But what if the cable came off on the top? How would you get in to the door while it's closed to be able to open the latch?

I've watched several videos on this because both doors won't open on my 2000. I couldn't get the left top hex screw out, it stripped out, after going to a second auto parts store, trying to get help, my neighbor was there and came over to look at it. He had to remove it with a small vice grip I have and he got it out!!! Wooo hooo!! He said it wasn't my fault, the screw was cross threaded from the factory!! So I've got both flanges replaced, I didn't know about the string before I pulled the top completely out, I'm so glad I watched you tonight because I wasn't able to get the top piece back in where the 3 hex screws go!! I watched you three times so hopefully I can finish that door up tomorrow. I've got to cut my grass and weed eat so I've got to be done with it!! Kudos, five thumbs UP: excellent video explains every thing with the top cable replacement, which is the one everyone seems to have the most trouble with. I chose to just replace my ferrule ends with the aluminum ones, (buy set with one having a thinner end, a "cam" end) rather that the entire cable / latch assembly. when nothing was wrong with the inner wire business part of the cable. Personally in this instance, I resist replacing garbage OEM plastic part with another plastic part whether it be OEM or aftermarket plastic. Did need to completely remove cable however in order to install new ferrule ends. Lost my string, and turned out on my 98 did not need it to lead cable back through. Good practice though as some trucks might be different, me just lucky. Another thing worth mentioning. Way you were dressed, my guess is that the ambient temperature was not much more than freezing, if that. Everybody knows that old plastic breaks, it just does. It even breaks better when it is cold. Just saying. Did mine @ 80º F, only partially destroyed the plastic push thru clip you did for the lower door panel, mine still worked. You'd probably do well to have truck in heated garage, or warm plastic parts up good with heat from trucks heater, or even a hair dryer provided was not too blasted cold and windy. Inspected my lower cable ends and it was in great shape, no cracks, left alone. Just oiled and greased everything (dirt be dammed) reinstalled panel. Thought is after watching this & other YT video, I can get that panel back off in 10 minutes to do the lower one if that ever becomes necessary. Good job from a great instructor, good video and overall great presentation.

#1) that is a bolt not a nut... #2) if we're going to do it right as you were saying about others, WHY didn't we do the bottom cable at this time too. Was rather surprised you didn't even check it... The fact that both ends of the top cable had dried up and broke, ( yes they were working, but still broken). Wouldn't it be a good idea to check, or better yet, just replace that bottom cable at this time. All the cables were the same age!!!. You did a fine job on showing us that top cable replacement. 4.5 outa 5 on that. ( the .5 minus, was because you didn't give us the "part information".. # & brand) Thanks... One comment to the excellent video. You may need to adjust where you place the threaded end of the cable into the plastic clip on the mechanism. I went with it in the middle to the threads and the door wouldn't latch. This was the approximate location the original was placed. I put it closer to the end of the threads which put less tenson on the upper door latch and allowed the door to close and latch.
