Best video ever. Never done drum brakes before. After seeing video it took two minutes to remove brakes so I could pull axle to change seal that was leaking gear oil. You made a scary job to a 10 minute job. And a 500 to 1000$ job go to 10$ seal and 4$ can of brake cleaner . And the new gear oil for rear differential 25$. 39$ total and 30 minutes . God bless you

My needle nose kept slipping . The wire cutters helped me disassemble in 2 minutes. I spent 30 minutes with 3 needle nose slipping. The side cutters made it to easy. I had to remove all brakes to pull axle to change axle seal gear oil was pouring out. I had no time to waste on springs. Best video ever

Excellent video. One minor suggestion for the drum brake newbie is to spend a little more time with the seating of the adjuster arm and spring. Believe it or not, I did not properly seat the adjuster arm fork into the brake pad first time around. Also, I did not have the hole in back of the hub to pull the shoe in. I used a strap and ratchet around both shoes in. Worked fine. Thanks again. The video is great and a h😊uge help.

*Read first and watch full video before job* List of helpful, overlooked tips: -First, chock your front wheels and put the truck in NEUTRAL before pulling drums. Not mentioned in video. -If you don't put in N, do NOT function brakes with drums off (you need to function brakes to shift into N with an automatic). Wheel cylinders could overextend or jam shoes on backing plate. -To remove drums, first back off adjusters until drum rotates freely. Use the two bolt holes on the drum to tighten in two M8-1.25x50mm bolts, alternating as you tighten. Hammering the drums should be a last resort. -Take pictures before you begin. -Blasphemous, but those side cutters will help you out a lot with the springs. Pliers are going to fling the springs across the room and take longer. -Brakleen AFTER parts have been removed. -A sanding disc will take out too much material. Use a die grinder with a wire wheel instead. -If using a wire brush, wrap it with a rag. Cleans better and keeps your brush clean. -Disconnect the parking brake cable. It's very easy to reattach. -Prior to putting on the drums, ensure the assembly is centered by checking the gap from the lip all the way around. This will help the drum go on without contacting the shoes. -Your lug nuts may not be deep enough to mount the drum without the wheel like it's done in the video. Use washers or spacers or a different nut. As for the video, excellent instruction, thank you. I'm not a mechanic and couldn't have done it without your help. I'm looking forward to more videos done for 2nd Gen Tacomas. Ps: I love the invented names for some of the parts. Premium, inconspicuous trolling, my man.

If you don’t open the bleeder you don’t need to bleed the brakes. And you can push the wheel cylinders back by hand.

Thanks for the detailed video. I have one issue. After completing the brake pad change, my brake pedal is now soft, I never touched any of the bleeder valves. I'm going to bleed the brakes, but before I do, I'd figure that I would ask the question on why the brake pedal is soft? I did pump the brakes multiple times and I also took it for a test drive. Thanks in advance

Honestly I was told to never use a real hammer on brake drums, especially if your gonna re use the drum and only do the internals because it can dent the drum pretty badly.. if your gonna replace the whole drum obviously not an issue but I just thought I’d say that lol I always used a deadblow hammer for this kind of stuff

Toyota recommends cleaning the hub flange and installing the paper gasket that it originally came with between the drum and flange. It can affect brake noise. There is actually a TSB about Tacoma rear brake noise. Nice video.

Great video! I have an 05 Tacoma PreRunner that has 160,000 miles and still runs great and is mechanically sound. Probably because I can work on it myself. I attempted doing the rear brakes, which are shoes a couple of years ago and finally went to the dealer to get them done. After watching this video, and I am certain I can now do the job when it comes up again. The "diagonal cutting pliers" appear to make removing a number of the springs and clips for the shoes a "must have" tool. What size diagonal cutting plies did you use?
@stevanrose7439
@stevanrose7439 3 жыл бұрын
It’s not good practice to use side cutters to remove the springs. What I have found in the past is needle nose pliers with heat shrink tubing on the noses. You don’t want to nick the springs because it could brake there. Even a fisherman doesn’t like to nick his hooks with pliers

Great video, very well done. While I can see the advantage of using diagonal cutters for grip, watching the springs being grabbed by the cutters made me cringe. Unless I was having trouble holding on to the springs I would prefer to use needle nose pliers. One question, I didn't see or hear any mention of the parking brake. Not sure about the Tacoma but on many cars you need to release the parking brake first or the drum on one side won't come off, at least not without the risk of damage. I'm going to go pull mine off to inspect the brakes so I'll find out then. Not sure I'd hit the drum with a mall or hammer. If a rubber hammer or soft blow hammer won't get the drum off put two bolts into the holes on opposite sides of the drum (between the studs) and walk the drum off without beating on the drum. Thanks for the excellent instruction.

Ok so I followed this exact process. My brakes were actually pretty decent but I changed them anyways because the drums were rotted. Now I adjusted the drag properly, but my brakes feel very soft at the foot and don’t engage until I’m 1/2 way to the floor. Do I need to increase the drag? The tensioner with the star adjuster in it had way more threads showing when I took my drums off. Maybe 14 threads were showing and now maybe 4?

Quick question I just called my mechanic to replace my brake pads on my 2010 Toyota Tacoma for the rear. He recommended replacing the entire drum because his experience was just cleaning and putting brake pads on you get cavitation or pulsation I mean. Is this true, they want $1200 to replace the rear brakes. This is in Hawaii curious if that’s pretty steep also is it a fairly easy job since I would buy all new parts to replace myself?

Great video, but I'm confused about one thing; at the end, why is it necessary to adjust for drag on both sides simultaneously? Can't I do one side, slap the wheel on when done and then proceed to the opposite side and adjust for drag then? Is there something going on that won't allow to fully adjust for drag on one side first? Any clarification is greatly appreciated. Thank you 🙂

I have a 2011 Tacoma 2wd 2.7L 4 cyl. I assume these drums are the same as my truck. I have a problem. I had a shop do the drum brakes and shortly after they did it, I had a spongy brake pedal. I see no fluid leaks. Is it typically air in the lines causing that? Could it be an internal leak in my master cylinder? The pedal goes down a little over half way to the floor before it starts engaging. It's kinda scary. I want to bleed the lines first, then go from there. Anyone have advice on this?
