Excellent video! I think I may try replacing my own stunts on my Tacoma. I appreciated that vehicle was actually not new. So many videos are of r&r on new vehicles...never dirt or rust.

One thing not mentioned here is he happens to have the entire strut new. meaning he replaced the spring not just the shock. Many might just be replacing the shock which means you will need spring compressor to transfer the springs onto the new shocks. Replacing the entire strut saves you this added work.
@tacomas96022 жыл бұрын
For 99.99% of people it makes more sense to get the assembly all in one go. By the time your original shocks are leaking, your springs are sagging.m

@@tacomas9602 I’m that 0.01 percent got a deal on shocks and kept my springs wouldn’t recommend 😅. Would do it again great learning experience.

These videos helped me a ton! You have to do them as a set for the front because you won’t be able to move the sway bar out of the way to fit the struts in and out. I also had to cut out the bolt that connected the strut to the lower control arm because the whole thing was seized. Just used a angle grinder. Other than that, it’s cake.

Can this be done for just the shock replacement too or is the strut assembly compressed, which would require a compression tool? Great detailed video.
@STRANGE_hour2 жыл бұрын
Thanks man - my model was different for the sway bar linkage - hex key to hold the bolt as you loosened it - careful if it’s old enough it’ll be ground out - had to cut mine off and replace the linkage other than that smooth sailing.

Does in the control arm have to be pretty accurate to specs when tightening at the end or just something close?
@drakeforte52 жыл бұрын
I also asked the same question. Found UCA replacement docs for Tacoma and it says just lightly tighten UCA long bolt and put everything together including the wheels and lower to ground. Bounce it a few times, this probably means standing in front door entry and jumping a bit, then torque the long bolt with the wheels on the ground. There is enough space for torque wrench in my case so I will try this. Makes sense since it sets the UCA to the correct height when tightened. I might have made the mistake of having UCA low so it will stress the bushings during flex I suppose so I'm going to rectify this.

Hey TRQ, if the connector snapped off and all I have is exposed wire and the side marker but no where to put the bulb and also no way to connect it to the car - what parts do you recommend I get? I’d really like to do this myself by finding the right wires, protecting them with the right material, finding the connector and attaching them to the wire, getting a new side marker and bulk and connect it to the connector.

be glad when they post a video for changing these with a lift kit. No where near as easy as they make it look. They seem to forget a "nice little bonk" includes welding torches and a shit ton of scraped knuckles.

At :50 to 1:00 you act like we need a backing wrench on a VERY LONG bolt through the upper control arm bushings. Those are SEPARATE bolts. And the SQUARE nut is held captive by a retainer. There is no need for any backup wrench.

No info anywhere about how to set the sag on your new shocks once installed. My front end sits low and I’m afraid to loosen the top nut to give it more height. Does anyone know how to do this?

Should the coil springs be replaced when shocks are? I have an 09 Tacoma double cab 120k miles. Not nearly as bad as that truck you showed. Mostly street riding.

Preference. It'll return some ride height that you may have lost over time. But the main thing to replace is the shocks.

This is my question as well. The video on the “Toyota maintenance” channel just takes off the top three bolts and the major bolt at the bottom and the whole strut slides down and out. I’m confused why this guy takes off so much other stuff.
