That's what I want to hear. These trucks have had this reputation for some time. Going to look at a single owner, 2012, TRD crew cab 4x4 with 60k miles. Don't really care about the TRD part but the truck is priced right and comes with all service records. Will let you know.

@@400hpmustang Of all the Tacoma's, the 2.7 liter 3RZ-FE 4-cylinder engine is proven to be the most durable of them all. It replaced the famous 22re engine which was/is equally as durable, but the 3RZ has a good bit more power due to being larger. The 3RZ-FE was made from 1994 through 2004, a 10 yr production run. They have a heavy duty steel timing chain & gears vs the timing BELT used on the V6's. The 3RZ also was produced before the variable valve timing that requires that nearly water-thin oil. I bought a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 with 3RZ-FE engine & automatic transmission brand new. 20 yrs later and 362,000 miles on ALL original engine & drive train, it runs as good as ever. I just replaced the timing chain & gears plus the balance shaft chain for the very first time.........which is "a no-no" because they should be replaced after 150,000 miles. If a timing chain OR belt breaks on ANY overhead cam engine, you drop valves on pistons, busting the pistons & now ya need a total rebuild. Many gripe about the 3RZ "lacking power". The easy fix is INSTALL A QUALITY STAINLESS STEEL ( preferably ceramic coated ) LONG-TUBE HEADER. ( The factory cast iron exhaust manifolds always crack anyway. ) I've installed headers on several V8's I've owned yrs ago with no other mods.......I noticed a slight power gain, but nothing to brag about. But I'm here to tell anyone, I have never seen an engine respond so well to a header only, like the 3RZ-FE. It really brought this thing to life.......even better than when it was brand new. It's now much quicker from take off and decent power gains throughout the entire rpm range. It even causes the automatic transmission to be more responsive by downshifting easier with only a decent "poke" of the throttle. Had I known what a difference a header makes in performance for this thing, I would've done it years ago. My buddy is a Toyota tech/mechanic. He knows everything about all Toyota's. He says the 3RZ will outlast all of the newer engines with variable timing. Sure, the VVT Toyota's are durable as well, but not nearly as much. I'm just about convinced this little truck is going to outlast me......and I'm 59 yrs old, lol. Best vehicle purchase I ever made, hands down. Cheers.

I am a committed Toyota owner for many years. It is a vehicle that you just typically service (maintenance) and rarely if ever have to repair (something died or broke). They are head and shoulders above all vehicles, in my opinion, due to their quality and engineering designs. I have seen many Toyota's passed down after being driven by the primary owner with hundreds of thousands of miles on them, but still reliable and start consistently, to others in their family because they are so cost-effective to own over American and other foreign makes (Japanese, Korean, and European) That's my 2 cents after having worked in the auto repair industry for 30 years. Thanks for reading my response, but I know not everyone shares my thoughts and agrees, which is cool. Take care and be safe, and wear your mask out and about for consideration to others!

I have a 2008 Tacoma base model, 4 door long bed. 240000 miles. I have owned countless trucks since the early '70s. This is absolutely the best truck I have ver owned. Toyota gave me a new frame and new rear leaf springs in 2019. Eleven years out of warranty. Contrast that with Subaru that had a bad engine problem for 13 years and they would only cover them during the warranty period.

@@krgnet1573 you want to wire brush as much rust off as you can, get as much caked on dirt and mud off, then spray the fluid film, it'll protect it but you should do it every year, keep the fluid film off your rubber parts, if you spray it by accident, wipe it off. I'd suggest you watch some videos on it.

I have a 2006 with 157,000 miles on it. I never had any of these problems. Because I live in the Oregon and Washington area, no salt is used on roads, even today it looks almost new on the underside. The dealership replaced my rear leaf springs as the recall and added another spring. Its now super strong and can hold up to 2300 lbs. as long as you aren't getting too crazy on hills. The only issues I've seen are the plastic head lamp covers, they are slightly fogged on the top side. But its not related to heat from the bulbs. When the truck is all cleaned up, I've had people think its only a few years old.

I'm just glad most of the parts he mentioned are very easy to replace, my main worries is the life of the engine and transmission which its unsurpassed by any other manufacturer, and it's what makes Toyota number 1 over Ford, Volkswagen, benz, Subaru, chevy etc... especially knowing that american cars have more plastic on the block and more unnecessary electrical components that could go wrong its a win for the manufacturer and a loss to the buyer.

I love my 2005 TRD, it has never left me stranded but has the following issues - it blew through the AC compressor at 85K and now it has gone again at 157K. I have been fighting P0420 code which is catalytic converter so I put Iridium spark plugs in it and it went out for a year and came back. So then I cleaned the throttle body and it went out for 8 more months and now back again. So I will try the TPS sensor as you say. The frame was replaced in 2014 which is unheard of for any car manufacturer, and I do the Krown rustproofing treatment and I have no rust living in the north rust belt. It still shifts smooth as butter and and has excellent lights compared to new cars but they are getting smokey so maybe I will try your 1AAU headlights replacement. But I must say, I call this truck "Stormy" as it will trudge through any snowstorm or heavy downpour and always feels safe, it has a killer heater and it just feels beefy. It continues to have good power up our steep hills in this area, and can tow a decent trailer. I know I haven't changed my photo but I gave up my Silverado for this older vehicle, and it has been a good experience.

@@randolphchappel6098 Yeah the Sylvania ones are overpriced. Well rated ones on amazon are affordable and seem to be good. My interior lights on my silverado are form amazon. My bed and high mount brake light is from there and has been great so far. I feel the Sylvania ones though overall are the best quality. Hope that helps! If it is well rated and the reviews say they last a while they should be good!

I'm having my final inspection on the frame before the 12 year period is up, but the dealer in Texas said it looked great. I had a 13 TRD SPORT...i had DIAMOND KOTE applied when new on the frame....frame was solid after 7 years. I did replace both rear springs with after market springs sets and made truck ride nicer and tow our RV much better. Only real problem was my radio antenna...replaced all hardware twice because of excessive corrosion. Heated seat on driver side died in 2019. The rest of the time I had no issues at all.

The frames were screwed up from the manufacturing process at Dana Corp. It wasn’t a recall either, it was a voluntary inspection replacement campaign. Toyota inspected frames in certain cold weather states where heavy salt is used. They initiated an anti corrosion spray process that would further make the vehicle eligible for future frame replacement. Currently there’s a frame treatment and replacement program for 2011-2017 Tacomas.

About 3 years ago I got the notice to bring my truck in to check the frame for corrosion. Yep! Replace the frame was the word. Just last week my truck went in and got the frame replaced! She’s a 2009 TRD. Other than that she runs good. One of my complaints is that the so called leather seats really don’t hold up to any wear and tear. I’m not sure if a replacement to the auto wreckers is the answer to that or go to an upholsterer.

I'm the sole owner of a 2005 Toyota Tacoma 2.7L with manual transmission with just under 90K miles. Driven in Los Angeles its whole life. Here is a complete list of problems, roughly in order of appearance: 0) Combined MPG was stated as 21 MPG on dealership sticker, real-world MPG is 14 MPG. A disgustingly inaccurate difference of 33% off the estimated MPG. 1) Very loud squeak coming from inside transmission caused by clutch fork rubbing on clutch pivot. Can be heard from sidewalk by pedestrians. Worse on wetter days. Master & and slave cylinders replaced 3x under warranty, still a problem 16 years on. WD40 gear and chain lube sprayed onto clutch fork cup is the lubricant that prevents the squeak for the longest time. 2) Recall: seat belts 3) Recall: steering column wire 4) Recall: Leaf springs 5) Recall: Inappropriate labeling of child-seat anchors 6) Headlights got too foggy and needed replacement 3x over 16 years 7) AC blower motor went out 8) Recall: Frame (did not receive new frame since I live in L.A. where there is no road salt) 9) Recall: Airbags (did not apply to my truck's bags) 10) Oil seep from cap on rear differential 11) Oil seep from back right section of valve cover. This minor oil seep unfortunately drips onto the exhaust, causing major panic due to awful burning smell and slight wisps of smoke. 12) Driver-side sun visor fails to stay fully stowed, drifts down a bit 13) Paint on top of cab worn away partially by less than 40 drive-through car washes over the years. Mostly I hand wash myself. 14) Paint on top of fenders worn away by car washes as well. 15) Tie-down rings in the rear of the truck's bed but not in the front of the bed?! 16) Left side-view mirror often comes loose and needs re-tightening 17) Never happened to me, but a cheap piece of foam serving as a filter in the air intake can disintegrate and dissolve into your fuel injection system, causing thousands of dollars in damage. 18) Paint cracking at or near seams where doors touch cab. 19) AC gas leak End.

Several years back when I brought my 2007 into the dealer, they took the stock mats, which were nice, thick mats, and gave me thin flimsy crappy ones. The grommet in the carpet that holds the retainer in place was broken and gone; they said it wasn't their problem, that they had performed the recall procedure and I was good to go. I replaced the grommet myself, but now the retaining clip has broken and now the mat still doesn't stay in place. I can't believe they can't come up with a better design.

Took it to the dealer and they could not replicate it but recommended replacing the front and two rear cables at a cost of roughly $1,100., without checking/lubricating the parking brake mechanisms in the brake hub. Have you encountered this problem with this gen of Tacoma.

By smoke I mean a white smoke screen! Go somewhere where nobody is around. Helps throttle response. Literally takes a few minutes

I have owned my 2011 4X4 for almost 10 years and now have 255k miles on it. I have done just standard maintenance over that time. The only things that I have had to do multiple times is u-joints on the rear drive shaft three times. Front brakes twice, rear brakes twice because one of the axel seals started leaking and saturated the shoes. The rear leaf springs were recalled and replaced. I have not touched the shocks, ball joints or tie rod ends. I have never done an alignment either. The last set of tires I put on were Michelin LTX A2s, and they lasted 95k miles.

As far as the head lights go you can use some mag wheel cleaner and make them look like new. No need to replace them. And never use sand paper on any head light.
