Good instructions. Thank you. I just finished all four struts on my 2011 OB. I should have used the pry bar method on the rears. Instead, I disconnected all four bolts from the lower swing arm, the knuckle, the strut, the sway bar link, and the swing arm attachment bolt up near the center of the car. I had a bitch of a time getting all the bolts lined up and and back in. Hopefully I’ll never have to do it again, but if I do, I’ll surely use the pry bar method.

Warning to anyone thinking about using this method and if you're trying to do this by yourself, don't. This method needs two people to do this right, one to push down on the crowbar and the other to remove, slide in, the struts. You might get the old one off, but without another person putting all his weight down on the crowbar you won't have enough travel to slot the new one in. If you're by yourself. Look at the arm the strut is attached to, go back to front, remove all the bolts, then off/on. The only issue would be the reassembly, which would be to line them up, then get the bolt back on the last one, should line up the other two and save yourself the aggravation.

Just put the top in first then you only have to flex the suspension a little to slide the bottom into place. Super easy for one person. Just did it this morning on my 2017 outback.

Lol I don’t Torque it down I just use my electric gun but I believe the top bolts are 22.4 ft-lb and the bottom is 46 ft-lb

If I lift the rear should I get anything to make alignment easier?

If you are just doing the rear struts, you do not need to do an alignment

Garbage Subaru (original) struts would be my guess. I’m here in 2024, for rear strut replacement knowledge for my 2021 Subaru Outback. Never taken off-road and never towed anything. And never [emphasis] buying a Subaru again.
