How to replace RZR Valve seals. (Engine smokes on startup)

Hey guys.
First time opening up my RZR 1000 engine for some minor repair.
Polaris never wanted to do it when it was in warranty so I waited until it smoked bad enough to warrant going into the engine and repair the issue.
Video explaining how to install the cams and set the timing with the covers off and engine on a work bench.

I put the RZR on the trailer the next day after this video and took it on a trip to the river. Rode about 60 miles and the RZR did fantastic with no smoking, noises, and no leaks.

I did this on a quad once, I used a piece of a strap and stuffed it in the spark plug hole then rotated the piston up towards the valve replaced all seals. Ran great, I had the quad about a year after that before I sold it. The air is and awesome idea I’m gonna have to try it

Excellent job man!! That's some heavy danger if something goes wrong and you drop a valve.

Hey thanks for putting your video out here. Maybe you will see my question and respond. How did you keep the piston(s)/crank from moving when you supplied air? Breaker bar or blocks of wood or something? I'm about to do this to a 2012 900. Leak down results were 9% on #1 and 3.5 on #2 but it does smoke a lot of oil. Doesn't seem to actually run out of oil that fast though. 2500 miles and hours. Wood blocks is how I held the engine still because I was worried the engine might turn either way from top dead center if I just used a breaker bar. I didn't want it to turn the opposite way I was holding it with a breaker bar during the actual removal process of the valve springs because then the piston could drop far enough and probably change the air pressure and let the valve fall... I could also hear a tiny amount of air come from the exhaust, intake and oil reservoir cap during the test. I didn't check the coolant. I used a digital compression tester before this and got odd fluctuating numbers for each cylinder after i warmed it to 180°. #1 196, 221, 204. #2 223, 204, 216. Normally the gauge gives me closer readings with other applications. Sorry for the info blast but looking forward to a response.

this is good information for people who are wanting to put the hot cam conversion shim kit on They would sell more of them if people knew this i just bought that kit and head studs definitely going to try this before I pull the head if you did it again is there anything you would've done different Would it be easier to pull off the bed

Probably would pull the bed. That's about it. Was hard to put the keepers in like this, but not impossible.

I'm thinking on doing this to my RZR as well to eliminate the need to rebuild the engine. I'm loosing about 1/2 qt. after every ride. No smoke from exhaust, I was told this is due to synthetic oil. Other than no more smoke on startup, did your oil level stay full?

No mine never lost oil, just smoked on startup. I'd do a leakdown test before I started on it. You may have bad rings, more likely if you've ever gotten it hot before too.
