Thank you much for this video. I had to replace a friend's belt tensioner and getting that off and on was easy cause the tensioner was bad and the belt came off with ease. Trying to put the belt back on I tried from the top side to move that tensioner. Tried for two hours with no luck. Then I found this video and once I realized going underneath was the way to go...I had the belt on in five mins. Thanks again

Thanks for the video. In the process of changing the belt, idler & tensioner pulleys on my 00 wagon and wanted to see how tension was relieved. My one comment is: After having a tensioner failure years ago, I've always made it a habit of replacing the tensioner and idler pulley when replacing a belt. Yes, it costs more, is a bit more involved, but these items rarely get serviced and work as hard as the other pulley driven accessories on the engine. And when these break, they will leave you standed!

Yes the belt diagram is very helpful. The job was quick and easy. I had a 14mm tensioner bolt on my wife's 2000 Focus ZTS. And a pipe is a must for leverage on that tensioner.

Excellent video, also works for the UK version of the 1.6 with AC except they used different sized bolts for some reason, the tensioner bolt is 17mm and the lower cover uses 8mm.

Quick tip, Once you release the tension on the belt, CUT it and pull it out. This will save you a little time, and possible frustration trying to get it off of some of the pulleys.

Hey man, IDK what Focus you're working on. I have a 2003 LX that looks different. I also have the zetec engine (Vin code 3) but there is NO WAY I can fit a socket in that space. I can't even fit a pass through socket onto that bolt, there's so little clearance between the tensioner bolt and frame. Why is it we're both working on a Focus of the same vintage with the same engine, yet what you're telling us to do is utterly impossible on my vehicle?

The steering on my 02 Focus got very hard as I was turning into my driveway. My husband looked at it and when he got back into the house he was holding the Serpentine belt. There was a tiny crack in it and he said that it was hanging down. I am going to have to get it towed but your tutorial is very informative. It looks like in your video that you have that car up on a hoist but we would only have a jack. Could we still be able to get at the belt with only a jack ?

+Steve Colbert Not sure exactly what the part number is since it's not a part that we sell. But I can tell you it's something you should replace. Because of the location of that serpentine belt, without the cover it's possible for all kinds of moisture, debris, oils, etc. to pollute or otherwise damage the belt which may result in premature wear. Usually you'll see cracks all over the belt.

So on a 2001 Ford Focus, to adjust the belt tension turn the bolt clockwise to loosen and counter-clockwise to tighten? Is that correct? How do you know when the belt is the correct tension?

Thank you for watching. A 2001 Ford Taurus use a Hydraulic tensioner. So you rotate it to loosen the belt then when the new belts on and you let go of the tensioner, it will tighten itself. Please let us know how the repair comes out! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
