How To Replace SRX Lower Control Arm Bushings

Thanks to Mark Elliott for bringing it to my attention that you SHOULD NOT TIGHTEN THE REAR BOLT ON THE CONTROL ARM BUSHING UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS AT RIDE HEIGHT. If you're wondering what the torque specification is on that rear bolt, it is 41 ft/lbs and then an additional 90*. You are also supposed to install a new bolt because it it torque to yield.

Is it really necessary to torque the bolts? Did you go back and torque them? I found video about preloading the control arm (lowering to ride height) before tightening the bolt. It is to prevent tearing the rubber bushings sandwiched on either side of the bushing assembly on another style of bushing. Since this bushing is made differently and the torque is on the center steel "tube" I don't think it would be required procedure. Correct me is I am wrong.

I didn’t go back and torque them. GM does say to torque the end bolt at ride height to prevent tearing the bushing. We will see how long it lasts.

Do we tighten the bolt hand tight, then put tire back on and lower car to ground then do the TORQUE and +90 tightening ? Can we torque the other bolts without the car being at ride height ? Will be tackling this repair on both sides in the next week.

Are you referring to the singular bolt that goes into the bushing at the end? The one that you tighten last?

Somebody at mavis told me I need the whole control arm replaced for $1000 when it might just be the bushing. Not including alignment. Anyway to get more money. Pays to do research. Thanks for the video!

Kudos for teaching your son early on how to work on cars. My critiques are, no torque wrench and tightening down suspension components with the suspension unloaded.... and no, I’m not a pro and I do actually work on my own cars and those of friends and family.

Pete was Hoping to ask you a car question,I have a 2014 Ford Fusion Titanium and it started to Stall out at Red lights at Idle. No codes come up normally but once I was stomping on the accelerator and got P00C6, but only once. How can I tell if I need the High pressure fuel pump under the hood or the one in the tank?

That code is for the low pressure side of the fuel system. You need to check the fuel pressure with a mechanical gauge and compare it to the pressure sensor reading to verify it's not the sensor. If the sensor is reading correctly, it's probably the low pressure fuel pump in the tank.

Unfortunately I need to find a fuel pressure gauge and where to connect it. Removing the tank with out alot of the tools like a lift can be troublesome! You are Amazing and Thank You Tons!!

Great video as always. Would you please show me the best jacking points for this car? Using a standard floor jack and stands. I noticed you placed two stands at front of the car. Where did you place the floor jack to do that? As well as where do you put the floor jack to place two stands in the back, so you can have the whole car on 4 stands... You can jack the car up using anywhere on the cradle that is under the front of the vehicle. It is a big square frame that supports the engine and front suspension. I just put the Jack under the front middle of it. As for the rear, I didn’t lift it. But you could probably put it under the control arms or use the jacking points on the rocker panels.

Hi Pete I did some shopping for the bushings and it looks like the cost of a bushing is more than 50% of the cost of a complete CA assembly, with the bushing. I've not done this repair before so I'm wondering if it makes sense to replace the entire CA rather than just the bushing. Your thoughts?

My wife’s SRX makes a clunking noise while turning at low speeds, mainly backing out of the driveway or parking. Was thinking to start by replacing the lower CA’s. Ever came across a sound like that?

I would look at the sway bar end links or bushings. Check out my video on the sway bar bushings. That might be your problem.

@@reynaescamilla7600 have since sold the vehicle. But we ended up doing a full front suspension overhaul as pretty much everything was shot. Front control arms, ball joints, and shocks. Pretty sure it was the control arms.

Hi Pete, I have a 2014 SRX AWD. I have a pair of axle stands and a jack. Where are the proper points to jack up the car and put axel stands on? I see that you've placed them somewhere else than the spots suggested in the manual. Where would you suggest me placing them on? Thanks.

Same part number for both sides. If it needs the front bushing you need to get the whole arm. I can’t find just the front bushing. If you get the whole arm you also get the rear bushing, front bushing, and new ball joint.

Trying to replace the whole control arm. The bolt right behind the wheel free turn with the nut. It has the size 5 hex but no room to get a tool in there. Any ideas? I can't see any disassembly that allows access

Are you talking about the ball joint nut? Is so, the stud it tapered so you’ll have to put some pressure on it to seat the taper to prevent the stud from spinning. Put a Jack under the ball joint and use it to put some pressure on the ball joint. Turn the wheel so you can get a wrench in there and it should come off.

$310 plus an alignment. They are $63 each on rockauto.com. The parts price at the dealership was probably close to $100 each for the same part plus a little over $100 in labor.

Spray Fluid Film on these bushings every fall. Do not use it for door gaskets- either silicone spray or Mothers VLR spray works better for door gaskets.

There is two bushing and 1 ball joint but the one he replaced is the most common culprit and the only 1 that can be replaced without doing the whole ca

Those rear bushings are not going to last long if they stay tighten that way. Should do another video to show how it should be done.

I agree this is not the proper way to torque these bolts according to factory service manual. Do the research before tightening bolts . He still did a good job with video .

I'm pretty sure there is a lot of heat on these lithium mines for being bad for the environment. My 3/8 Milwaukee electric impact can't compete with my 3/8 air impact.
