2007 Yukon Denali with AWD and the Allison transmission cooler lines make it impossible to drop out the bottom. Pull the RF wheel and work through the wheel well. No need to pull the inner fender liner. Pull the electrical leads and heat shield first. You will also need to remove the exhaust manifold heat shield to get the clearance over the frame rail. This was a great tutorial. Many thanks.

Don't hate on the video because it doesn't help you, there's a video out there that will. in the 6.2L dropping it down is almost impossible because the space between the oil pan and sway bar is so tight. I popped off the fender cover and the access is perfect, and I suggest removing the connectors BEFORE unmounting the starter from engine. Much easier through the fender for all engines -especially for people who don't have a lift. thanks for the video tho, still helpful.

Thanks man , just switched mine out. Really helpful video . Took Maybe like an hour 30. I got my starter tested , sometimes it started horribly and really weak and would make a crank sensor code to light up . I changed the sensor thinking it was that even thou it would clear up and go away on its own. The starter test failed because the gear wouldn’t extend. What a huge difference. My truck never started like this. It’s only got 95k miles and is an 09 but even when I got it at 75k it was still never a strong healthy start.

Just replaced the starter in my 2013 Sierra. It was a bit different and I really had to remove more of the wheel well splash guard to access it. Also, I had small three metal tubes (maybe refrigerant lines) in the way of removing it. All I had to do was pull those down to slide out the starter. Oh...it also had a press/snap-in electrical connector instead of the second nut on the starter. Saved myself $250.00. Cheers.

This is a very nice video. Well done. I have some notes for a 2014 GMC 1500 4x4. There is a heat shield attached to the starter with a 10mm bolt that will need to be removed. The positive wire is not held to the frame with a bolt but with a plastic strap that has one of those "push in the hole, can't pull out without forcing it out" tie downs. The frame is a box frame so there was no way to get to the under-side of the plastic tie down. Finally, even after freeing the wire from the frame, it does not allow near enough slack to get to the nuts holding the wires on. So, now my GMC is sitting in the driveway with the starter dangling down and I have a decision to make: a) Man-up, go back out there and keep working on it b) Go back out there and try to get the thing back in so I can drive it somewhere and punt (the issue is intermittent at this time) c) Call a tow truck and punt I will likely do a) and take a hint from Ezra Ivey and try to go through the wheel well. Though I am not sure if Ezra meant to take off the metal fender body part or just pop the front passenger wheel off and remove the plastic shielding. I hope it is the latter. Thanks for the video.

4X4 Sierra and Silverado OWNERS READ THIS! - This video is great BUT this will not work on a 4X4 version of these trucks. It took me about an hour to do my 2012 Sierra 4X4 starter replacement. The only thing that you want to do from under the vehicle is remove the two 13mm starter bolts. THATS IT, IT WILL NOT DROP OUT OF THE BOTTOM of the truck on a 4X4. You have to then remove the PASS side wheel and wheel well cover. Then you need to unplug the small starter sensor plug from the starter. That will allow you to manipulate the starter positioning to bring the starter out from in between the frame and exhaust manifold heat shield. The motor side of the starter HAS TO COME OUT FIRST, then you can wiggle the gear side out and bring it all the way out the to the brake area to remove the battery 13mm terminal nut on the starter. Its very easy and the whole process takes about an hour to hour and half.

So apparently this is not the procedure for 4x4’s there is so many lines and components it would be impossible to pull down, I had to pull the fender cover, remove the cables and then force it between the frame and heat shields on the exhaust manifold.
@KynanPB3 жыл бұрын
This method doesn't work for a 2011 Chevy Tahoe PPV. There are two solid brake lines running where he pulls it out from in this vid. Instead, I had to remove the fender liner and pull it out from between the exhaust manifold and the frame. I had to bend the heat shield on the exhaust manifold in order to squeeze it out though.

This really helped in changing my starter in 2008 Silverado. Auto-Zone did not. Had to wait 5 hours for delivery, got it home and was an inch longer, simply would not fit. another store gave exact replica. It is a bitch to get the new one in, but maybe my 7 and half decades and working under ramps contributed to problem. Take the old one in and compare is my advice.

Generally recommended to disconnect the negative just to avoid tools shorting from the positive terminal to a body panel (or something else). Wrenches and ratchets tend to bang around on things no matter now careful you are.

My mechanic saying the truck it not starting now and im worry because it was running ok when i dropped off to him this morning ..the only problem was that a few days ago it did not wanted to start and i hit the start a little and problem solve ,thats why i thought it was time to replaced, now this other problem. What could it happen if you dont do it right?
@AutoRex1013 жыл бұрын
There isn’t much that can go wrong during a starter change unless the mechanic violated rule number 1 (disconnect the battery) or severely screwed up the install causing misalignment. It’s possible the solenoid wire isn’t connected properly. Check for 12 volts on the large wire, and 12 volts on the solenoid wire while the key is being held in the start position. If voltage is missing on the large wire, check the battery connection and fusible link. If voltage is missing on the solenoid wire, check the starter relay and fuses. It is also possible that the anti-theft system is being triggered (it would be flashing security-related warning messages and lights on the dash).
