Here is the order in which you will want to remove this alternator.
1. Disconnect the battery
2. Remove the engine undercover
3. Remove the radiator (auto transmission remove cooler lines)
4. Remove right front wheel
5. Remove your drive belt
6. Remove your engine idler pulley
7. Disconnect the alternator wires
8. Remove the alternator adjustable top mount
9. Remove alternator lower bracket
10. Slide the alternator out, you should have plenty of room

Great video, thank you. This is a nice car to drive but I've found that it is one of the most difficult cars to work on. Even changing out spark plugs or replacing the ignition coils in the back is a project. Now the alternator is acting up, sending the wrong volts to everything. Usually in my experience an alternator either works or it doesn't, that's why I discredited it with my recent issues of having almost every light in the car come on. but again, nice video, very good footage and lighting of the parts and areas of the car that we need to access.

Thanks.Working on my 96 Maxima is easier considering it's also a VQ motor.

Thanks for this video. But you didn't mention how much trouble you had getting the lower bolt out on the alternator. Before you put the socket on it was dry, then wet when you removed. To anyone attempting this ... Use a 6 point socket! If you search the net you'll see many horror stories about what it's like after its too late and you've stripped this nut. Also, heat the nut with a torch ... Hot as you can, and then let it cool between heatings. The expansion and contraction will help break it free. I did that about 7 times and finally got that sucker off.

Flipclockfans so torch the nut of the idle pully in order to get it off ? I’m having trouble getting the pulley off!

Beware of re-manufactured alternators. I had two bad ones in a row. Cost me $235 (Parts Source) and $360 (NAPA). I bought a used one from a wrecker for $75. It works well. Because of the bad alternators, I ended up pulling out the radiator and refilling it three times. Many hours were wasted.

Did you try auto zone or advance auto, Pep boys....? Usually their replacement parts are pretty reliable.

After taking out my pulley tensioner I have all the parts but putting it back together it's been a real pain in the ass because I don't know which goes on first the thick washer the thin washer the part that goes up until the hood where you loosen the tension from or what because it any sequence I've tried so far putting that pulley back on the thread but it gives me problems and I can't get the pulley to slide all the way on to the bolt enough for the nut to grab any help here

No need to remove radiator or drain coolant. Did mine yesterday without removing radiator, only removed upper radiator hose to get fan assembly out.

@@MultiDwan i got lucky because this cars a/c had no pressure so i was able to remove suction hose from compressor which allowed room for alternator to come out without removing whole radiator.

I need help on how to get a really stuck bolt on the tension pulley off. It’s really tight and it looks like if it’s stripped a bit

Put some penetrating fluid like WD40 on there and work the bolt back and forth if you can.

@@MultiDwan Six point socket? Just a guess. But that Liquid Wrench spray stuff usually works....It's like a penetrating oil for rusted bolts.

I don't know why he removed the whole 9 yards all I had to remove is the top cover and the cooling system little container not the radiator and the fuse box had to move it to the side to have room for the bottom long screw to come out EZ with no prom and to lose the tension i used a 14 wrench and push downward and the belt comes out EZ WOW I didn't have to use my carjack👏 😮 👏

I see that you didn't remove the AC compressor.....would that be easier to access the alternator? Some of the vids I saw were pretty good....yours was much more betterer....due to your placement of your camera. Thank you!!

Might be a bit easier removing the AC compressor, but I would rather remove as little as possible.

@@MultiDwan I'm of the same frame of mind. Case in point... being able to replace my head light bulbs without removing the whole bumper assembly prescribed by some. Thereby reducing the cost of labor... and extra unnecessary work. Credible short cuts do work and makes for "Happy".

Any flate rate techs here feel that 2.3 feels short? Cause then u got to refill the coolant system after your done...

@@tedhernandez2394 He meant 2.3 hours. Tbh 2.3 on this job on this car with the vq motor is almost unheard of.

@@suzumr2754 I would think that it must be a bear to attempt this job especially with the lower bolt. My plan is to purchase the alt and have my mechanic install it. I already have the new belt and pully/adjuster setup. Not that I'm lazy but those days of getting under the car are over fur me. I do almost everything else on my '04 Max 3.5. And I've saved a lot of bucs. Thanks to KZbin I've found lots of shortcuts to do the job.

Yes it is, just remember if it's an automatic you have to take off the transmission cooler lines as well on the rad.
