A tip for anyone who does this. Be very careful with removing the battery, it is very very securely glued on and is attached to vital ribbon cables. Best idea is to be super gentle and use a hairdryer to weaken the glue

I very much agree that this video makes the process look deceptively easy. It was not! It became very obvious to me that the case in the video had been opened before. The plastic pry tools were ineffective at best and one was very chewed up by the time I finished...about 2 hours. I had purchased the iSesamo metal pry tools by Newertech and both those were slightly bent by the time I finished. I have NEVER had a worse case-opening experience than this. The pristine look of the case is gone and it does not close tightly anymore. There is no way the battery could be pried up so easily, as was indicated in the video, with the plastic tool as shown. Mine was very securely fixed in place. I had to use a long screwdriver to gently pry it up. The actual process of putting the battery back in and connecting it was a breeze...the ONLY part of the replacement process that was easy. In the end, it does work, but the case no longer fits tightly and it is scarred by the process. Knowing what I just went through, I'm not sure I'd do this again.

Tools I recieved with the battery were useless, tips sheared off quickly, opened the case with a very old, thin silver sixpence and a silver threepenny piece (what are they? ask your great grandmothers lol). Might be a good idea to note that there are clips all around that once you have located them a little push opens the cover. Battery was easy to remove and install. The grey rubber strips were stuck to the cover so I had to carefully peel those off and put back around the hard drive. Pretty pleased with myself, it all works fine now. Thankyou.

This was easy. Took me about 30 minutes. Tips: use heavy guitar picks (1mm nylon) to wedge open case. Concentrate on one side, and the ends. The body will swing open part way, and you can then remove it. Work gently - watch out for other ribbon cables!

That iPod was definitely opened before this video, but still shows the correct way to go about it. Didn't bother to order the tools though, took me roughly less than 10 mins with a small putty knife, and a tiny jewelers flat head screwdriver. For me, I keep it in a nice protective case anyways so, wasn't worried much with potential small cosmetic nicks on the plastic edges. Thing has been a beast for years but, can never hold a charge these days. Can't wait to replace my battery now, and have it operate as new again!

Same thing happened to me. When you pry the battery, SNAP goes the HOLD switch flex ribbon since it is epoxied too. Not fixing mine. Disgusted, I toss everything including the new battery into the trash. Video should be renamed "How to fuck up your IPOD." Otherwise, he need to slow down and explain the presence of the other ribbons, where the lay, and to not to apply force against the battery if any of its adhesion is attached to a flex ribbon. And, it's always attached to the hold switch ribbpn

Thorkild, I replaced the battery in my 160gb ipod about a month ago, and while this guy left out a couple of small but necessary steps, the "kit" I got failed almost immediately. The plastic snapped on both of them, so I used a couple of jewelers style screwdrivers. I got it apart, but it isn't pretty. You can see all the spots where I was prying to open it, but fortunately, it did go back together and is working great. If I remember correctly, you are supposed to slide the little button at the top into the locked position first, and you have to gently push down on a button where the cable is attached to free the old one. When you install the new one, like he said, push the thing down to lock it in place. I'm a 59yo grandma, and if I can do it, I think most people will be able to, but watch more than one video before starting. That should help put the process in order for you. I have 2 more ipods I'm going to change batteries on but I have better tools this time. A nice little kit I found in tools at Walmart last week. You're right, that one had already been taken apart. It's not that easy the first time as you've found out.

Tip for anyone attempting this....Don't! The plastic tools are complete garbage and the tips will break off almost immediately. Then, when you resort to a slim flat edge screwdriver you are guaranteed destroy the back cover and the front casing because Apple made these in such a way to "INSURE" that nobody is going to "STEAL" their designs. Apple doesn't want you inside their products. The tutorial here makes it look easy as eating a slice of chocolate cake, but it's absolutely not. It practically takes a jack hammer to pry the back cover off and to break the adhesive holding the battery in place. Apple purposely put a ribbon cable under the battery so that when you remove the battery, the ribbon cable will break off in two sections and your Ipod is now perfectly prepared for the E-Waste bin.

Hi, I have several questions actually. I'm from Bosnia and have an iPod classic which I purchased from an authorized store. It seems that my iPod's battery is dead. The display shows the message connect to power but when I connect it to my laptop, it doesn't show up, which used to happen in the past if the battery was completely drained of power. I tried recharging it using the cable and the 10W adapter for which they say it can be used to recharge iPod classic. Not working either. So I tried the store where I had bought it, in 2009 or 2010, they said that they cannot get the new battery and replace it because iPod Classic is no longer made, so they cannot order a replacement battery. The only solution I have is to replace the battery myself. Now my question is, since I live in Bosnia, is there a seller on ebay that is selling new and original iPod classic batteries. I simply cannot give it up. I love listening to audiobooks, I use the iPod to listen to music when I drive or exercise but to be honest purchasing a new iPod touch/nano isn't an option, simply because they have smaller memory and I like my old iPod, it's like a pet, or a good old friend. So anyone please, do you know a seller on ebay selling new (unused) and original iPod classic replacement batteries?
@BondJaneBond168 жыл бұрын
I've already got in touch with your customer service people and they told me that there is no way that they ship that battery due to shipping restrictions. :-( Even if a company ordered 100 of them, then there would be import taxes and customs fees to pay, so I'll probably try one of the batteries bought on youtube and pray it works for at least a month.

You misunderstood my comment - I'm talking about removing the back case - it can't be done as demonstrated without damaging the thin metal strip above the 30 pin port. I tried - it's bent out of shape already and the case didn't budge...but thanks for the tip. There is an Apple repair shop in the mall - $20 to replace the battery that I provide - they can do it for me.

It is certainly not easy like is showed in this video, the plastic tools are worthless, and some precautions should’ve been mentioned when working near the screen, mine broke, yes I know, it was me, but still should be mentioned. I ended up being able to replace the battery, but now my iPod is all beat up around the edges. If there is a place where they can do this professionally, I recommend you take it there.

I almost messed up the charging port after following this video. Better to start on the side with a sharp object instead of these plastic tools.

This video is not realistic. The nylon tools recommended are completely useless. They look like magic wands in the video - the cover was obviously removed previously. I ended up using a metal screwdriver and had to bend the cover quite a bit before getting it off.

Hey Kevin, We apologize you had issues with doing the iPod. You do want to keep in mind these iPods are older units and due to the wear and environment and if never opened it can be more difficult to open but it is very doable. We apologize once again for the difficulty you had.

The video cuts at 1:18 and does not show them transitioning from opening the bottom to opening the side. That is where you're going to get stuck. I found that the nylon pry tools that were included with the OWC kit were not of sufficient quality to actually pry the case apart at the bottom corners. I tried sliding them around and they fell apart. At this point I am stuck and have ordered a kit of pry tools from another vendor. I hope that when they arrive I will be able to continue the installation.

These tutorial videos piss me off so damn bad. EVERY person that has made these videos had taken apart the iPod BEFORE making the video. I just got done taking apart my wife's iPod so I can replace the battery and it's not as easy as these "instruction" videos show it is. It's also hilarious how this video showed how easy it was to remove the battery. I'm about to remove the battery and I'm nervous as hell because I don't think it's going to be as simple as this. I wish someone would post a REAL instructional video on taking apart the iPod to replace the battery. Even if the footage is in a time lapse mode. But something to show a real way of doing it and something that's not false advertisement.

Find another video that shows/tells you where the clips are. Opening these things is a lot more difficult than what this video suggests

We am sorry A. Colvin that is not included in the video. This is an older video but we can look into see what we could do.
