A little tip I use: Put masking tape right along the seams where you intend to pry from. It helps prevent your tool from sliding across the surface too much when you do happen to slip. It may not stop all marking but it will help keep any marks that do occur a bit on the smaller/more minor side. Granted, you may simply not give a damn with these products for all I know, but I figure the tip may at least be of use to someone.

The original hard drive in my 160gb 7th gen classic died recently and I probably wouldn’t have known where to start getting in to the thing without this video. Once I’d managed to get the isesamo tool to open the back case a crack, I found that the best thing to keep the clips deactivated was a bunch of hair clips as they’re thin and slightly sprung metal. I’m waiting until Payday to order a new back case, front case and battery, however I now have it running off a 256gb SD card. Thanks Dank.

Really excellent advice. I have a 6th generation iPod. That battery is kaput. Bought a replacement battery and took it and the device to the local Apple Store where they basically told me to get lost. They won't touch any Apple product 7 years after it has been discontinued. Worse, they told me "these weren't made to be opened". A lie, of course. The truth is that these weren't meant to be opened by the user, but only by Apple, and Apple did open them during the warranty period of the device. So, I'm on my own and will follow the entertaining instructions in your video.
@matthewdinslage81204 жыл бұрын
This is why I love your videos, you're the most honest KZbinr when it comes to classic iPods. I have modded many classic iPods myself and I always roll my eyes at other videos where they open these things in seconds. The only way that happens is if it has already been opened dozens of times before. The 5th gens aren't too difficult but can be tricky if never opened before, once they are opened its effortless to open them again. But the 6th and 7th are nearly impossible not to bend or damage the backplate unless you really know what you are doing.

I did open one of these to insert a bigger hard drive and the difficult part is not the opening, but opening it so that you do not make it look ugly later - bending the back back into shape without actually trying it on until I'm sure it fits well is no fun at all. I used like 10 guitar picks (dunlop Tortex are the best I've tried as spudgers, as they're flexible, but not malleable so they don't get disfigured , bent or broken too easily), a putty knife and a purposefully blunted safety razor blade (I used a small, roundish stone to make the blade dull, but it will go into places no spudger, plastic or metal, can go in and it's so much cheaper than anything, especially if it's already spent from shaving). And I managed to get it to look OK, just one corner feels a little rough to a finger, but without any visible kink or wrong curvature.

The easiest way to make the initial entry is with a exacto knife blade. I don't know the number, but they have one called the shovel blade which is square and you can easily work it into the gap because it is much thinner than the other opening tools. 6:17 Be careful! I tore the ribbon cable for the hold switch on my third battery change. The adhesive from the second battery stuck to it. They get very brittle over time. It's part of the whole headphone jack assembly (which still worked) so I just let it go since I don't really use the hold switch anyway.

You know what would be a cool mod for these 6th/7th gens? Cases that close with screws as opposed to clips. Wouldn't be as slick looking, but also *far* less of a monumental pain in the ass to open. Not sure if it would make too many weak points in the frame part inside, but just think about it: Holes on the circumference, going through top and bottom halves of the case, and into the frame. Threading on the frame holes. Introduce screws. Boom!!
