Thank you for making this video. The store told me it was integrated and it couldn't be changed and that a new phone was in order. I found that guitar picks worked very well, thin enough and strong enough for the task. You can find jewelers screw drivers at any hardware store for cheap. The whole replacement cost me under $70 for tools and batteries.

The amount of pressure required would instantly break a plastic tool. A broken plastic tool can be sharp and under pressure could puncture a battery. A metal tool used correctly was the right choice in this instance.

I managed to short the old battery during removal, while working it loose from the glue. While working the metal slim-jim-like shim tool underneath, I suddenly smelled a chemical odor. I stopped what I was doing and touched the back of the battery. Scalding hot! The battery began to swell a bit. I placed the phone on the driveway with nothing flammable nearby, then aimed an IR thermometer at it. Battery was at 210°F. Thermal runaway temp for Li-Po is 265°F. The temp did not rise any further, so I put a small battery powered fan on it, and eventually it cooled down to ambient. After carefully extracting it the rest of the way, it turned out I had torn the bag open and shorted it with my metal shim underneath where I could not see. I lucked out; it was only shorted when the tool was present. Phone is undamaged. It's a good idea to run your battery all the way down until the phone shuts off before doing this job to reduce the amount of stored energy in case something goes wrong. The glue is very strong, and simply pulling on the battery is unsafe. It needs to be carefully separated along both edges, similar to how you removed the glass back.

You're suppose to run the battery down. You should have checked out other instruction websites. Li-on can explode if punctured.

For me replacing the battery was the only option because I am still paying for the phone. If I don't use the phone much the battery might last all day. Yesterday I made 1 short phone call and sent and received several text and the battery was dead in 6 hours. If I use the phone moderately I have to charge it part way through the day. If it has heavy usage then I need to charge it twice. So replacing the battery is a must. One of the things you need to be warned about is if you have a glass back it could shatter. I have a heat gun and I heated up the the bottom of the phone, I lifted it up with the suction cup but when I put the pick under it the glass cracked and once it cracks it shatters the whole back. So I went back to Amazon and bought a back cover. All in all with this video I was about to replace the battery for under 40 bucks. Really good price. Also make sure that along with the screw drivers and picks that you have a small paperclip so you can pop out the SD card. By the by could not have replaced the battery without this video, thanks. As a technician I love the internet because you can find a fix for just about anything now.

I am at the point where I carry a high capacity battery with me. When it gets low I charge the phone from that if I'm on the go and can't sit and wait an hour for it to charge from the wall. What a pain. You'd think they could have made it 1 mm thicker and put in a larger battery.

hey thanks for the video, i completed this process yesterday, my only advice for anyone doing this is buy a new cover before you start as it is near impossible to remove without shattering it. my battery came with all the tools i needed for the small screws but i still needed to use a flat sharp object to both very carefully remove the cover (which shattered the old one) and to remove the battery.

For those who want to know, you must heat the back glass immensely. It should be so hot that you can't touch it without burning yourself. Only then will it start to come off. Taking the glass off is a real pain. The battery is bad too, but not as much as the back.

Don't buy a Note 4. All Note 4 have a power doesn't come back on problem. Just search "Note 4 power won't come back on" on KZbin.Turns out the power regulator chip ball solder joints are flacky. Also the phone would shut down at 40% battery level. I solved that though by cleaning the battery terminals and the phone battery contacts with WD 40. Problem solved. Now my phone will go right down to 7% then shut off. When I shut the phone off to change the battery however the phone wouldn't turn back on. I had to take the battery out and let the phone cool down for at least 15 to 30 minutes before starting it back up. Some people have had success by having the regulator chip re-balled. I went back to using my Note 3. No problems with the Note 3. The Note three works with a used bluetooth speaker I bought. The Note 4 wouldn't recognize it. Just so they can say it is water resistant they put in non-replaceable batteries and sealed it in the Note 5. Big deal. I prefer replaceable batteries. I swap 2 batteries back and forth.

LMFAO... Right I was thinking the same thing... Who wants to go through all that? But what I was also wondering is how much would a phone repair place charge to do it? Probably close to $100 or more I would think seeing as many damn screws have to be undone and all the damn prying... On second thought nosy neighbors and certain family members are good at prying so maybe I can just put it back together LOL

Can you please clarify one thing. If you cut the glue off the back of the first case to get to the screws and in the end when it comes time to place the case back on again, would it not make sense that the case will not adhere and seal as well as it did before cutting the glue. Don't we need fresh new adhesive to make sure everything seals back together well like the first time before cutting and melting the glue?
@russmack7910
@russmack7910 5 жыл бұрын
@kilahchris A better word than harden would be adhere. If the original adhesive is in good shape, there's really no reason it wouldn't adhere the glass cover to you phone. If it has cooled, it MUST be reheated. Just keep in mind, the internal parts would now be exposed.

Max M - My note 5 was unable to be stolen because of this. I installed tasker and another app that tasker runs when the screens turn on to prevent the phone from being turned off when locked. They also couldn't lower the ring volume. Even if they did, it doesn't matter. I used tasker to set a routine where if I text my phone a specific text, the phone rings loudly until I text another message that stops it, or I unlock it. Since the above method to remove the battery is the only way to remove the battery, the battery can't be easily removed to turn off and steal the phone silently. So when I forgot my phone at a small store, using both the gps, rfi signals and the phone constantly ringing, I found it quickly. The kid who had it looked so embarrassed too.

So I am really trying to understand how you did this; the end. I don't think that you can just put the back glass cover back on without adding any glue. And Maybe possibly after that heating it up or something to activate it and make it stick. But I can tell the cover is not going to just stick back on have factory grade resistance after that. Also, trying to place the cover it looks like it might have gotten smaller or something, some of the undercarriage exposed by like a 1 mm of space and two of the corners don't completely seal either. Any ideas on workarounds or other experience anyone can share?

I needed to use a better suction cup as well, and found that the small sized one from the snap hook set in link below worked well: www.amazon.com/Snap-Hook-8-Hook-Value-Pack/dp/B000OAE7KA

Bonus points on mine, the battery started to swell and actually forced the backplate half off. Yay for saving a step, lol.

Hello, and thank you so much to share your skills with us! To have seen this is the last point for me to trust in buying a note 5 , 'cause now l know l can help myself in time of defect batteries (e.g. on sundays or far away from any other help) or if screen will scratch or more although gorilla glass 4 and a safety thin glass - cover l use to give to my devices. l love to repair my devices by my own hands and so l did several times with my S2 and with my Nokia communicator and my electrical guitares when l began to play guitar. l am still called when there are any problems with these expensive instruments. They all work fine and they hopefully will in future. l was afraid not to be able to lose a problem having a barren - phone without possibility of changing batteries or just to open the backcover to remove dust etc by time. Now l will be able to do so after some years of using day and night for a long time. 'Till now l use my note 2 and l still love to work with it but it's time to get a faster one with a better working internet and with a lot more features l'd like to use. l'm a 52 years - young woman and l'm a fanatic technic lover. So l not only use Facebook ( l don't like) and KZbin but technical, biological and medical apps and llike to learn languages and physics by phone as well as music - theory. So l need my phone as often a day l nearly can't count 😂. Time is money and l had some bad time with a lot of months spending at hospital and yet l come back to "real life". So l need a better, faster, more comfortable smartphone that does the things l can't do because of my handicaps my body is filled with to recompense my “body - mistakes“ and l know l'll love to learn to know this little technical device. You helped me with your knowledge and l'm happy ' cause l feel that l can trust in you. So this video is - especially for me and people like me - more than just a little help. For me it's a yes or a no to an umpiring part of my life and l must be carefully to choose right. Life can go on, l'm prepared thanks to you for a little bit important part! Thank you and be blessed by our great LORD!

It's not though. This is a 5 - 10 minute procedure. Could it be easier by being "removable"? Sure, but it's far from being the worst replacement experience.

It's not supposed to be removable anyway & may void your warranty.

I'll be replacing the battery in mine soon. But I'll be doing the digitizer, screen, battery and rear glass all in one shot. I've overheated the battery on many occasions by having it on the charger, streaming Netflix for hours at a time while mirroring to my Samsung Smart TV all at the same time. The end result is a battery that got so hot, so many times and is so swollen that the entire left spine of the phone is completely blown apart and the back cover is about 2" away from the frame. It's so bad that the phone has to be kept in an OtterBox Defender case just to hold it together. Obvious safety issue there. There was so much pressure on the whole assembly that the last time I removed the OtterBox, the back glass was shattered. The screen and digitizer are being replaced because of ghost imaging and my keyboard being permanently burned in, and the outer glass is cracked from me accidentally tossing my pocket knife at it late one night. I had just got home from work, and I was emptying the contents of my belt and pockets onto my bed. Everything, including the phone, wallet, Leatherman, dual arc lighter, mini flashlight, belt all landed a safe distance from the phone except for the knife, which hit the upper left corner of the screen and shattered it. Despite all those problems, the phone is still 100% functional and doesn't miss a beat. This phone is the first one I've ever had that has had so much as a scratch or even a minor blemish since I got my first smartphone, a BlackBerry, back in 2006 or 2007. As much as I've always held the belief that smartphones are delicate, this particular one has proven to be extremely resilient and pretty damn durable. It's already been retired and was replaced by a Note 10+ late last week, but I just can't bring myself to throw it away or give it up for recycling since it would make an excellent backup device should anything ever happen to the 10+. My most recent backup phone before that is well over eight years old and is in perfect showroom condition, a T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G. The only problem with that one is that it's basically only good for making actual phone calls anymore or running severely outdated apps because if I try to update them, I'm greeted with a friendly little message informing me that the update isn't compatible with my device. The Note 5 doesn't owe me anything and has been in service all day, every day since around October 2015 with no hiccups or warranty returns. The least I can do for it is invest a few bucks to restore it to like new condition. Anyway, great video. Very informative even though the first few minutes don't really pertain to me anymore! 😅 I can just pick it up where all the screws need to be removed and the ribbon cable disconnected. I'll jyst have to catch another tutorial about getting the screen out and a new one safely in its place. I may or still may not replace the back glass, but I most likely will.

Max M -> JJ SS Max M - My note 5 was unable to be stolen because of this.
