Taryl are you sure it bumps the exhaust valve and not the intake valve for compression release? On my 8hp it bumps the intake valve.

I have a serious lawnmower engine question for the master mechanic. I have a 16.5 hp Briggs & Stratton Intek opposed twin but I am contemplating rebuilding. It is a 42a707 2238E1. I was going to buy a zero turn but in the area where I live in South Carolina there have been a rash of people breaking into buildings and stealing these things from all manners of locations over the past three or four years. Would you recommend overhauling this engine? And if so, where would be the best place to get all the parts, i.e. pistons, rings, overhaul gasket set, new camshaft, new carburetor, new stater? Are the jugs available for this and would I benefit anything by going over size on the Pistons? Enjoy your program thank you very much!

I have a 21 HP motor on a craftsman tractor and could not get it to start. After attempting to adjust the valves (which did not solve the problem) I found an online article suggesting it might be due to a broken compression release mechanism on the camshaft. I'm not a mechanic and have never 'opened' an engine before but I successfully changed the camshaft by following this great detailed video. I ordered the parts on Amazon. What it doesn't show is how to remove the motor from the tractor but that turned out to be very obvious and simple to do as well, even for me. PS - this is my first ever feedback on You Tube but since I'm very happy with the results I thought I should provide this positive feedback.

Just finished this repair up. Thanks for the video, I wouldn't have attempted it otherwise. Struggled with this mower not starting, replacing all parts: battery, starter, resetting the valves, nothing worked. This was was very easy, especially since the pulley just slipped off, no torch required. 30 minutes to pull the engine, 30-45 to open, find all the metal parts that were chewed up inside, clean up and reassemble. Will put it back on the mower tomorrow. Awesome. There's your dinner.

While adjusting the valves on a Briggs 27hp with 277 hours, I noticed the adjusted valve would move up and down and loose it's .004" clearance when it should be on the "flat" of the camshaft. Used the top dead center approach as well as Teryl's. Teryl here explained and "showded" me that the camshaft was wearing out (highs and lows on the flat part of the camshaft). Yep, Teryl knows his Briggs engines. I just wish Teryl would work with the new and reorganized Briggs Company to help them start producing a quality product again! Brigg's CEO took a 5 million dollar bonus, filled bankruptcy, and took a hundred year old business and flushed it and it's worker down the drain. Thanks Teryl - love your audacious and fact filled videos!

Thanks for your video. I just had to replace my cam shaft and your video helped tremendously. Surprisingly my cam shaft was still intact but the pin that creates the valve flutter for compression release was worn smooth. Once replaced and I manually turned the engine over...... I saw the valve flutter that everyone describes when the compression release is working. Engine starts great now. Local repair shop quoted $500 for repair and discouraged me from fixing because of the tractors age. At 16 years old the tractor has more years to live.

Taryl, I had a problem getting my John Deere LA105 with Briggs 18.5 HP engine started and through google and you tube found out that my engine has a compression release and the starting problem was because it was not working and I needed to change the cam. I may not have taken this job on but after watching your video I jumped right in and the job was a piece of cake. Your instructions were right on you were very detailed and left nothing out. Fortunately the lower pulley came right off because with my mower you can not remove the engine until the pulley is removed. I got the parts from Pro Parts Direct and they had all the parts in stock and they came in very fast, not quite as fast as in your video but pretty darn fast. Thanks so much for the great instructional video and the many laughs.

I am having the same issue and having to replace the camshaft. Your video is extremely helpful. The only thing I would recommend to everyone out there (like myself) that is gun shy to turning a wrench, be careful when removing the original camshaft. The taps and possibly the push rods can come loose. Make certain the push rods are seated against the rocker arms correctly when you reinstall the new camshaft. I found this out the hard way unfortunately. But once I got the new camshaft in place, it held the taps/push rods in place (seating correctly against the rocker arms). I pray that the new camshaft will last me another 3-4 yrs. The compression release section looks to be cheaply engineered.

Where were U 20 years back when everyone had to read the detailed engineers version from B&S, Kohler, etc. in print. Most of it was hard to understand, harder to actually do and usually ended up having to be taken apart because a detail or two about the proper disassembly or reassembly was left out. Your videos show it all including the shortcuts to making the whole thing go back together without the long version in the repair manual. Five ***** to you for the effort you put into your videos to make them with just enough detail to get the job done. And OH yes video has just enough humor to keep it interesting.

Thanks for great videos. This one gave me the courage to attempt a repair on my Ariens with a 20 HP briggs. I got the motor off the tractor and disassembled today. What I found was the counter weight for the decompression release had broken apart. The cam itself looked like new to bad it is a cheap design on the decompression. I have ordered the camshaft seals and gaskets to complete the repair.Thanks again I would not have done this without your video.

Taryl, huskee with a B&S 18.5hp els 500. Last week I was mowing somewhat thick grass and right before I finish the engine started shaking and shut off. The engine isn't seized, when it cranks it sounds out of balance and shakes. Took cover off and lower pulley and shaft is not bent. I wanted your advice before I pulled engine. I enjoy your videos you've saved me a a lot of money the past year. Thanks again.

Very helpful video! I used MAP gas torch to heat up the variable ratio pulley on a INTEK 6.5 HP 121602-0190--E1 981008FA then quenched it with water. I didn't have an air hammer, but the pulley was much thinner metal than in your demo. I was able to use a pry bar and move one side of the pulley then then opposite side a little at a time and then the pulley came right off! I discovered the reason the engine was not moving the valves was it appears the camshaft gear was spinning on the shaft. The gear and the cam lopes are plastic. This may have saved the engine from overheating and ceasing up from sabotaged oil. I'm having the oil analyzed. I had a 240 Volvo engine that cease up for no reason with the mechanic looking at it stating the engine oil looked vary strange. This INTEK oil does not look normal its more of a gray than black and very non sticky. It was Amsoil 100% synthetic. Thank you so much for your video!

I just went through this with my Briggs 17.5HP Intek which has less than 50 hrs on it and the compression release mechanism blew apart. This video was very helpful for doing the repair. My 31-series engine has the oil slinger, it does not have an oil pump or filter. One thing I noticed is it looks like Briggs now only ships a camshaft with the notch for the oil pump. I guess they figure it doesn't hurt anything for non-oil pump engines to use the notched shaft and it allows them to stock one part number for both styles of engines. I noticed in the manual it says to put sealant on bolt #9 on the sump cover. I can't see why bolt #9 is any different from the rest but I put some RTV on it as directed. I also used blue locktite on the sump bolts. The factory used what looked like red locktite and as hard as the bolts were to remove even once loosened I'm surprised the aluminum threads didn't come out with the bolts.

Thank you for the tip! I’m replacing the camshaft on a friend’s and found out the new replacement part comes with the slotted end and without a small compression fitting on the other end.
@eosjoe565
@eosjoe565 Жыл бұрын
@@bayu01 They've been coming with the slotted end for a long time. That slot is what drives the oil pump on engines that have a spin-on oil filter. All three of my replacements came with the slotted shaft. I guess B&S figured the slot doesn't hurt anything on engines without an oil filter and it allowed them to now only make and stock one part number. Unfortunately the ACR mechanism doesn't hold up any better.

I was gonna let my Snapper dealer do this but wanted $500 which I get they have shop overhead and pay tech's decent money. They suggested since I work on most of my stuff I could do it. Your video is perfect especially the pro level details. Mine had factory thread locker on sump bolts that was so tight I had to use a butane torch and prayers to avoid ringing the bolts off so I chased the threads in the sump and upgraded to 8.8 bolts with blue thread locker. From now on will use your parts source. Thanks Taryl. Keep them vids coming.

Huge thanks, Taryl! And for the record, if anybody needs to know if it's the same on a B&S Platinum instead of an Intek, the only difference is that the Platinum has both pulleys as a single unit bolted onto the end of the shaft. Other than that, it's the same...lucky for me, because I woulda been up a creek without Taryl's guidance.

TaryI, I've enjoyed all of your videos over the last year. I've been watching you and not only is it very interesting but it's a whole lot of fun, more people should know about you. I wear your shirt and I drink from your coffee mug and everyone asks me where did you get that and I always tell them he's the best lawnmower repair man I've ever seen. Well to get to my point I have bought a 2004 MTD Enduro VT commercial industrial mower 20 horsepower with dual carbs overhead valve Tecumseh Motor, now I know people say oh tecumseh's are crap but I'm telling you this mower is as strong as any. I bought this mower for $50 because a guy couldn't keep it running off of Choke, I have redone this mower from almost the ground up and it works beautifully. By watching all your videos, now to my point I would like to idle it down, I have stuffed the Muffler with some coarse steel wool to quiet the engine down because I pull a little train that I have made behind it with my grandson and his friends love it, it idles perfect it runs perfect but I would just like to idle it down but with all the governor stuff that's on it and the Dual carburetors I'm just afraid I'm in over my head and I've never seen a video of yours that would actually approach this please let me know what you think.

He tells you everything you need to know about changing a camshaft and makes it enjoyable. He doesn't just tell you what to do but also "why" he does it. “It’s a freaking lawn mower..you’re not flying to the moon!” Still laughing the next day about that statement. I totally agree. Lol Thanks for your help, this is exactly the information I was looking for. Mine broke yesterday and thought it was way more catastrophic than it actually is.

I expected something totally ignorant and I got it. I also got a great DIY video. Thanks for the tip on setting the valves!

Some very sound advice. You are so right about the valves, On say your Spitfire four pot engine , rule of nine .Number one closed , number eight open . No different to a mower engine.Oh a i see 5000 subscribers , nice one.

How many hours would it take for an experienced lawn mover mechanic to do this job? Also how much additional time to replace the connector rod also.

After a nee carb, coil & plug. New filter and blew out the line- even higher octane. Flywheel key ok. Adjusted valves from 3-5, 5-7 at each thickness..lol. still popping- backfiring at times. Can mow a good size lawn without shutting off. Rebuilt old carb and with a new one still nothing changes. Hoping a cam will fix it...😁

Love the comments its not NASA it's not the shuttle. So true we all know we shouldn't do this or that but some times its the most feasible option, next time do it "Their" way and charge hourly lol Good stuff learned a lot from you, I guess I should probably buy some shirts soon because you've made me a few bucks so far.

I had to replace my cam because of the compression release. A year later my cam was worn like the one you replaced. When I was putting my 3rd cam in I noticed that the pot metal from the first cam (about the size of a BB) was in the hole that the cam goes in. It might have blocked some oil circulation causing my cam lobe to be wiped. PS I also cut my bank in the front yard.

I didn't expect to be entertained when I clicked on this video, but you got a few chuckles out of me here and there. Y'all are some goofs. Anyway, thanks for the information on this topic. It will come in handy when I tear into this engine sometime this spring. Too damn cold to work out in the shop now. Hope your 2021 is going well.

taryI, I enjoy all of your videos over the last year I've been watching you not only is it very interesting but it's a whole lot of fun more people should know about you I wear your shirt and I drink from your coffee mug and everybody ask me where did you get that and I always tell him he's the best lawnmower repair man I've ever seen well to get to my point I have bought a 2004 MTD Enduro VT commercial industrial mower 20 horsepower with dual carbs overhead valve Tecumseh Motor now I know people say oh tecumseh's are crap but I'm telling you this mower is as strong as any I bought this mower for $50 because a guy couldn't keep it running off of Choke I have redone this mower from almost the ground up and it works beautifully by watching all your videos, now to my point I would like to idle it down I have stuffed the Muffler with some coarse steel wool to quiet the engine down because I pull a little train that I have made behind it with my grandson and his friends love it it idles perfect it runs perfect but I would just like to idle it down but with all the governor stuff that's on it and the Dual carburetors I'm just afraid I'm over in over my head and I've never seen a video of yours that would actually approach this please let me know what you think

Kohler Thixotropic cam lube I save all them little tubes too. But that black sealant in a can that they use on some of their crankcases and rocker covers is some nasty and very tough stuff!
