Found out that O’Reily auto parts has an ac clutch tool set you can borrow for free for 48hours. It’s small enough to fit in the tight space. Has a small tool that pulls pulley right off by turning the screw handle. Makes this job easy.

Great job changing out your clutch & coil . you lucked out getting the electrical plug in one of the notches otherwise it wouldn't have seated all the way on the pump . Don't let anyone tell you, you can't do this on a 98 Contour 2.0 cause i just finished doing it , although a lot less room it's doable !! A little penatrating oil would have made it eaiser Great Job !!

Just did this on a 1992 Ford F150 i6 with an automatic transmission. Factory air installed. It went surprisingly well actually. Considering this is a rust belt car and it's a Ford. I drove the old pulley off with a hammer and it came off fairly easily (hammered it lightly repeatedly along it's edges. I was going to continue to use the old electromagnet but after getting the new one and seeing how it was made decided to install the new one that came in the kit. The old one came off quite easily by prying it off with a crow bar (resting the bar on the bolts in the compressor body). I put a light coating of thin oil on the inside of the bearing (the one in the pulley) and on the outside of the shaft it slides onto and it went on very easily. That was a surprise. I used a heavy (about 3 lb hammer with a short handle) and once it was carefully lined up on the shaft by hand, put a 3/8 inch plywood buffer between the outside of the pulley and the hammer and gave it light blows repeatedly and it went on easily. I put two washers/spacers on the inside of the pulley to allow the proper air gap (estimated). The biggest problem I had was getting the old snap rings out and the new one in (not quite as bad). Beware that there is some magnetic activity inherent to the mechanism even with the engine off and air turned off. I originally was going to use three spacers and when I decided to go down to two, when I took the clutch mechanism out the two spacers attached magnetically to the outside of the shaft. Had to pick them off with a pick. So I put a touch of silicone between the spacers to hold them in place. The compressor on this vehicle appears to be located more ideally than that I've seen on some of the other videos but even so I could not see clearly inside the pulley. Couldn't see the holes in the snap ring. Bought a mirror on a stick and a light and could then see it clearly. But lining up the end of a snap ring pliers with the holes in the snap ring using a mirror set at an angle was a whole new experience in hand-eye coordination. Never did get it right. Would probably take years. Eventually ended up hooking the eye with a pick and pretty much tore it out. That part of the process took at least half an hour maybe an hour. It works. No noise. And the outer plate of the clutch spins when the air is turned on. In this case, factory air, it would probably have been more difficult to take the old compressor out and install a bypass pulley. And it would have not have been possible to install a shorter belt to bypass the compressor because the pulley on the compressor would have been in the way. Thanks for the video. I used it as a guide for much of what I did.

Just reading your comment now I never saw it. Glad you fixed it. I ripped out the old snap ring too. After 3 years the a.c. still works great. Their should be no magnetism when it's off it's an electromagnet. You have a parasitic drain on the car battery if it's always magnetic. Check the ignition switch in the truck could be faulty and stuck in on position. With ignition off the clutch should have no power. When you turn to on but dont start engine if a.c. is on the compressor plate should engage. Check if it's engaged when the truck is off you won't be able to turn it by hand if it us on.

@@chriss4365 Just took some trial and error. Found the issue. The ball baring section was completely shot and the balls were floating. Stopping me from getting the pulley off. Now I have a new issue. The inner ring of the ball baring section is still stuck. All the balls dropped out when I got the pulley off. Without it off, I can't even attempt to remove the old magnet. 😫 if it's not one thing, it's another.

Super helpful video. I'm not sure why, but my 98 f150 (Nascar edition) seems to have a lot less room to work compared to all the other images and videos I've seen online... was so tight I couldn't even get a pulley puller/press in there, and had about 3-4 inches of space in front of the pulley to work with. Your trick using the old clutch hub with the screw driver saved me a lot of hassle... I was getting ready to just pull the whole dang compressor out! Thanks again for the upload

I was failing miserably at trying to do this without pullers and presses. When I saw this video, I realized there was a snap ring that needed removing. I was then able to complete the job with normal hand tools and a small hammer to hit the outside metal so as not to damage my magnet. Thanks

There’s supposed to be a beveled interior snap ring in the groove of the magnet to stop it from being pressed too far on and from coming loose and from running into the back of the pulley and wrecking the magnet or the magnet plug

@chriss4365
@chriss4365 7 жыл бұрын
Kordel Alleyne depends if the compressor is seized or not. Grab the clutch hub and see if you can turn it. Do this with the belt off. If the belt snapped something is seized. Also see if you can turn the pulley with the belt off if not then that's the problem.
