I truly appreciate you taking the time to make this video. After watching this video, I confidently completed the teardown and reassembly of my S40 T5 engine for a valve job. Previous owner had work done to it, and evidently it jumped time and burnt 2 valves. A "reputable" European import shop near me diagnosed it as needing an engine replacement when I was having keys programmed at their shop. Quoted $6k-$7k for the replacement. I thanked them and left with the car on a trailer. In my own shop I was able to determine that it very likely just needed a couple of valves replaced, and I was right. Anyway I had the head professionally machined and cleaned. I also replaced timing belt, tensioner, idler, water pump, camshaft seals, radiator hoses, etc. while I had everything disassembled. Today I took it out for a test drive, and it runs great. Thanks so much!!

How do the intake and exhaust valve solenoids get oil fed to them? As I’m looking at my valve cover, there’s no ports to allow oil to them. I’m curious if you have the answer? Does the glue prevent oil from going to valve solenoids and then prevent oil from getting to the cam journals?

If the cams are out you can slide them over the back end. It is best to use the tool, especially if the cam sprockets/hubs are off.

Hey Robert. I’ve been using this video to tear down my 2007 Volvo V50 T5 AWD, as it skipped timing a while back due to a snapped accessory belt. All 20 valves are bent, but no pistons seem cracked or otherwise damaged, other than small scuffs from valve contact. Hey Robert, what a super awesome video. I love the detail! I haven't any experience with Volvo's, but plenty with other brands. I'm looking at a 2011 S40 T5 that a friend is going to give away. They were told the engine needs to be replaced (a shop says it has a cracked block but I don't see how they determined that), I'm thinking it's just a head gasket. I see some overheating issues (cracked coolant expansion tank) and assume it's just a head gasket. I suppose if the block was cracked it could over pressurize the cooling system and burst the coolant reservoir. Big Question: Are these engines typically known for cracking the block or the head when overheated?
@RobertDIY2 жыл бұрын
Nope, just warp the head and over pressurize the system and crack the coolant reservoir, hoses, etc.

So you HIGLY reconmend not getting/taking the OEM head to a machine shop. It is possible I have a warped head. I was thinking taking the head to a machine shop to get it resurfaced and ported. but you are saying the lifters, are assigned matched to each valve for cylinder valve location. I want to take advantage to get the head performance spec'd matched for higher flow, and possibly install performance cams. What is your advice on that? I am guessing you advise against that.

I did NOT say that. I said that you need to make sure the lifters are kept in order.

As always, Robert, thank you so much for your sharing of knowledge! Your videos have been so helpful in working on my volvos! I have a question re: a head replacement on a 2005 S40 T5. This is the second P1 head replacement I've done (with your video's help), and this one is being a stinker! I replaced the head with an Odessa head, seals, new T belt (and all associated components), and everything according to your instructions. Unfortunately, I keep getting a check-engine light, and when hooked up to VIDA, I get the ECM611B code. (I also have an oil leak, but I think I've traced that to the oil cooler seals. I have replaced the intake camshaft solenoid, and checked current to it. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Again, thank you in advance!

Hey, as soon as I’m really hard on my C 30, it loses huge amounts of coolant.. been trying to track down a possible leak and I tightened and changed a few clamps on the hoses.. I replace the PCV oil housing and lines thinking that might of been an issue. No oil and coolant was mixing. Now I’m thinking it’s a bad head gasket or possibly the bottom of my expansion tank is leaking? I replaced thst not to long ago and maybe I was to hard on it when doing a coolant flush.. I’m really thinking it’s the head gasket and I noticed coolant spewed out. Seems like the bottom right and it was all over the side of my car. I don’t think it overheated. do I need the cam locking tool if I’m just replacing the head gasket ?

Robert, I always appreciate your insight, and videos! I have another S40 2.4i. This one is losing coolant out the right side of the engine (towards the firewall) between block and head. Likely head gasket. A little more background - the heater core coolant line broke, puking much of the coolant, so I'm assuming it overheated. No coolant in oil; no oil in coolant. My question: how often does the head (or block, for that matter) warp on these P1's? Do you see many that just need a new gasket? Or do they more often warp, requiring an entire head replacement? Thanks in advance, Robert!

Hello Robert im doing this job on a 2015 s602.5L turbo B5254T12. It has a burnt exhaust valve. I was wondering if you think i will have a problem when installing cam seals before top cover is on? In my past experience with other cars the seal will get pinched at the parting line of the cover and head and get stuck between both. Has this ever happened to you on volvos? I haven't removed sprockets yet but i will if i have too. I figure i will try installing cam seals without cams in cover as a test to confirm they dont get pinched.
