The most likely and simplest scenario is that you didn't pump enough so the filter didn't fill up completely with fuel, some diesel cars have a hard time pushing the air out on their own. When the position of the filter allows i try to fill it up at least half way before screwing it back so that its easier to pump the rest of the air out
