Tip. The belt usually comes double folded and very stiff in the packaging. It really makes it hard to install with all those bends. So, place it in hot water or sunny warm spot for a while until you can relax all the folds and you don't see any permanent bends from being folded for a long time. Makes it easier to install than fighting with the out of shape belt.

UPDATE: bit the bullet and went to the Toyota dealer and got an OEM belt. I was able to get on after taking the front wheel off, and even then, it was just barely possible. Saw a theory online that Toyota may have provided the wrong belt size to aftermarket manufacturers, from a guy who had bought multiple brands of belt. Definitely save yourself the trouble and just buy an OEM one, even though it's sickeningly expensive. ORIGINAL: This video makes this look so easy, but after 5 hours of toiling away, I was never able to get the belt on. It's definitely the right size belt. Wound up missing work this evening. I'm going to try jacking up the car and removing the front wheel and doing it that way tomorrow. I have no idea how this guy was able to get the belt on with this method; I'm convinced he must have magic powers. This is a really good and informative video, if you can get this method to work for you. I, unfortunately, could not.

Do you rememeber if you were sliding the belt onto the smooth pully or up over one of the pullies with grooves. Trying to gauge how bad this will be! Thanks
@CaptainJdotJdot Жыл бұрын
@Mike Perron I believe I was sliding it over the smooth pulley. I remember getting the belt situated on all the other pulleys, then struggling to pry the belt up and onto that final smooth pulley. I had my roommate at the time keep pressure on the belt tensioner while I reached up through the wheel well yanked the belt into place.

Jack the car up and remove the right wheel to get easier access to the left and center pulleys (power steering, tensioner, crankshaft).

I don't remember much of anything so I always draw the routing first. :) The engineers didn't leave you much room for the new belt did they Jim.

So slipping it over the water pump pulley is the easiest? Makes sense being that its got a smooth edge.

How can you tell when the belt is no good ?
@ahmadghosheh31045 жыл бұрын
If you see cracks on the bottom grooved side or the top is glazed and shinny then replace it. Also it doesn't hurt to do it every couple of years regardless.

Especially when its a serpentine. That water pump without belt is a kill shot to the engine if you don't pull over and turn off the engine right that minute, but you'll never know until its too late...

Yeah I tried the same motion of pushing down to release the tension on the belt to put back my serpentine belt. Then the bolt in the tensioner broke, just my luck.
