A few important points from a professional mechanic here: 1) When changing brake pads, it’s always worth checking the rotors for thickness and run out. A worn rotor can lead to excessive heat buildup and brake fade. 2) The caliper guide pins should be torqued down to manufacturer recommended settings. Not just tightened down as much as possible. 3) When compressing the caliper pistons back into the caliper, monitor the brake fluid level in the master cylinder, if it overflows, it will cause a mess and it is also highly corrosive and will damage paint and other components that it comes in contact with. Use a suction device or even a turkey baster to lower the fluid level if it’s getting too high. 4) After replacing brake pads and reassembling everything and before driving off, always pump the brake pedal a few times till the pedal firms up as the slave cylinder pistons move back out to the correct position. 5) Wheel lug nuts should also be torqued down to manufacture recommended specifications. Brakes are essential safety devices and hope the above points help someone do this job with due diligence to safety.

Great video but you should remind viewers to depress the brake pedal a few times until the pedal is firm after finishing the job. Otherwise the vehicle may not stop when pedal is first pushed.

Learned that the hard way when I was younger. Thankfully no one was hurt and no damaged property but man was that scary…..😮

You can also just remove the bottom bolt - the patriots are perfect for simply raising UP the caliper so you don’t need to remove the entire system - also saves 5 mins on the brake pad change :)

Was hoping you would include the brake fluid bleeding process... Don't forget to put that brake fluid reservoir cap back on, folks. Are the caliper pin boots essential to pads retracting from rotor when brake pedal not depressed? I.e. should they be replaced every brake job (or every other)? Thanks.

Question . When you pressed the brake to flush the cylinder... What if you don't have a decompressor is there another way to press it in ?

Instead of buying a caliper piston compressor you can always take a screwdriver to the caliper through the cooling fins of the rotor and compress it before you take it off

I just did this to my 2011 Patriot you don't have to take the top guidepin out just take the bottom one out and the caliper pivots up

What about the back brakes? Would that be the same as well?
@bhowett3 жыл бұрын
No they are drum brakes in the back.

if your rear brakes are disc brakes, the procedure is very similar, but drum brakes is a different procedure.

I got caught without a caliper compression tool one time mid job and it was such a freaking hassle. Talk about one of those $10 tools that will save you 10x times that in headaches.

In the video he accudently mixes the caliper pin bolt. The caliper pin bolts are different one has a plastic boot at the end if you wipe of the grease the other does not have one. The one with the boot goes on the top. The one without the boot goes on the bottom. It also seems the order he removed it had the caliper pin bolts in the wrong place to begin with.

4:26 what are those 2 pin on the inner pad meant for ? mine were missing and the new pad had some but now too late im not gonna dismantle it again for just those pin unless i know why its for
@dareptile26533 жыл бұрын
1:48 I'm missing the inner liner piece the that protects the pulleys on side of engine, right above your hand at that minute mark. I have a 2015 and want to protect those pulleys from the obvious stuff in winter etc. You know the official name or part # for that? I'm searching and I'm not even sure the term to search for.

Do you have to add grease or swap the clips?
@MDegenerate2 ай бұрын
Ideally yes. The fastest method isn’t always the best method
@tomparker5192 жыл бұрын
The new breaks didn’t come with the metal hardware kit. Your not going to put some grease on the caliper slide bolts. If anyone lives in the rust belt you might want to add these thing.
@jaywatkins41223 жыл бұрын
Are you not going to bleed the brakes?
@HidalgoMotorsCo3 жыл бұрын
Nope. Brake bleeding was done separately
@Dorpsservices Жыл бұрын
if you remove the bottle 14m bolt or the top, you can just let it hang since you are only changing the brake pads. No reason for complete removal. Also, should have put some grease on the lips of the brake pad.
@jaywatkins41223 жыл бұрын
I guess not. Well for those of you or there watching youre gonna want to bless your brakes if you want them to work after changing them. Albeit they'll pay much longer if you don't, but that's because they want me compressing properly, and actually allowing your vehicle down which defeats the purpose of putting brake pads at all on your ride. Im a lil bit surprised as the first thing he did was remove the breaker fluid cap, but maybe he made another video on bleeding them. Who knows!
@archersterling87073 жыл бұрын
do you add any lube or grease?
@dareptile26533 жыл бұрын
I always take it off clean everything with brake cleaner and let it drip the dirt on a towel on ground. I then hit all joints ends of suspension where there is joints with a small dab of WD-40 since I have it off. I do apply a thin film of brake grease to back of pad, nothing overkill, also a little bit where thin metal brake shim makes contact with caliper. I then use some of that same grease to rub on those rubber protectors on the caliber bolts thinking it would help prevent cracking from age. Finally if you had to use a breaker bar like me to get the rusted lugnuts off I'll give the threads a small dab of WD-40 there too.

its a piston not a caliper,and you need not remove the whole caliper,just one bolt and loosen the other and just swing the caliper up pivoting on the one bolt.I can tell you really don't know what you're talking about.
