How to Replace the Front Brakes on a Volvo C30 S40 V50 C70

How to replace the front brakes on a Volvo C30, this tutorial includes both the replace of the pads and rotors. A similar procedure can also be used on the Volvo S40, V50, and C70 models. In order to produce this video, Bosch has been kind enough to provide me with the parts required for this replacement. #volvo #volvoc30 #brakes

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-7mm allen socket
-1/2" drive ratchet
-standard screwdriver
-new pads and rotors
-brake cleaner and clean rags
-brake grease
-wire brush
-15mm socket
-large interlocking pliers
-hammer
Procedure:
Apply the parking brake and/or chock the rear wheels. Safely jack up the car, remove the wheel and, place a jack stand under the subframe. Loosen the master cylinder reservoir cap to relieve any access pressure when pushing back the pistons in the calipers.
Using a standard screwdriver, remove the spring retainer. It fits into holes on the caliper and clips under the caliper carrier bracket. Remove the plastic caps for the caliper fasteners on the rear.
Using interlocking pliers, push the piston back while the caliper is in place. Using a 1/2” drive ratchet and a 7mm allen socket, remove the two socket head fasteners. You can leave these in or pull them out completely.
Lift the caliper off the carrier. Remove the inner pad which is clipped into the piston. Then tie the caliper off to the coil spring so it doesn’t put excessive pressure on the rubber flex line. Using a 15mm socket and a 1/2” drive ratchet, remove the two bolts holding on the caliper carrier to the steering knuckle. Remove the old rotor. If yours is stuck in place, using a hammer, hit the rotor in between each of the wheel studs to help break the rotor free.
Using a wire brush, clean up the hubs mounting surface and this will ensure we don’t have any unwanted runout which can cause vibrations.
Compare the old and new rotors to ensure they are the same. As mentioned earlier Bosch has been kind enough to provide me with the brake parts to produce this video. For rotors, these are Bosch’s QuietCast premium brake rotors are 100% balanced for smooth operation and have a bi-metal aluminum-zinc coating to help prevent rust, give that clean rotor look especially on vehicles when more open wheels while providing a long life. Due to the new coating, these do not have an oiled coating so there’s no need for cleaning during the installation process.
Using brake cleaner, wash away any brake dust I do have the Quietcast rotors install on my Tacoma, so far I’ve put a few thousand kilometers on the new brakes and am extremely happy with them.
Install the new rotor. You can use lug nuts to hold it into place, this will make the installation of the new pads and caliper easier.
Clean up the carrier bolts using a wire brush. Clean the carrier using a wire brush, especially where the pads sit. The pads should fit freely, so no binding.
Install the carrier back onto the steering knuckle. Apply medium grade thread locker to bolts. Tighten the bolts down, the torque specifications for the bolts is 88 ft-lbs or 120nm.
For brake pads, Bosch has also provided me with their Quietcast premium versions. Compared to the old and new inner and outer pads to ensure they are the same. Put the outer pad into place, it should fit freely onto the carrier.
Pull out the old pins, they’ll be cleaned and have new grease applied. Clip the other pad into the piston on the caliper.
Clean up the old pins using brake cleaner wipes. And use a wire brush if needed. Using the supplied synthetic grease, it needs to be rubber safe so it doesn’t dry out the bushings in the caliper. Apply medium grade thread locker to the threads of the pins.
Install the pins. Tighten them, the torque specifications are 21 ft-lbs or 28nm. Install the spring retainer, start with the one hole but don’t fully seat it. Clip the retainer around the carrier, then insert it in the other hole and then gently tap it into place with a hammer.
Clean the rotor with brake cleaner if you left any contaminants from dirty hands. And finally reinstall the wheel, the torque specifications for the lug nuts is 80 ft-lbs or 108nm. Move onto the opposite side using the same process. Tighten the master cylinder reservoir cap when done.

Ah reminds me of how I tolled under the sun last year trying to remove that rusted front brake disk from my c30. At one point I had the disk, ball bearing and hub loose, dropping that sucker 1 story down on solid tiles It came out eventually, must be because of all that rust remover It was soaking in for 3 days straigh .The ball bearings had to be changed anyways and the hub got refurbished. Good times. I destroyed the tiles dough, land owner had words with me afterwards. I envy people living in decent climates with almost no rust on car parts. Was great really helped me! I did both front sides ! Only thing is when i was torquing the valiper bracket bolts back on they rounded off before i could get them to 120nm (the other side was fine) i did get aome tightness but id say more to about 60/80nm tightness before it happened. Should i be concerned?

Brakes are definitely a high safety concern. I would replace that bolt to be safe. You can weld a nut on it, try locking pliers, grind a notch for a screwdriver, flatten a couple sides with a grinder for a wrench, or a chisel may work.

I have a quick question though, I own a 2006 Volvo s40 2.4i 5spd auto. I just recent replaced the alternator by myself and after I was done, my dash started saying anti-skid required, which I've done some research and learned that it has something to do with the brakes? But I'm not completely sure. I'm wondering how to reset the anti-skid, because it causes my car to stall out at stops, very rough start ups and idle, and sometimes it jerks during start up also. I'm new to doing maintenance on my Volvo as I see you have more experience in this p1 platform than I do. Therefore I ask you this in hopes of your help? Please and thank you for your time and videos. They truly help me out so much when working on my Volvo.

No problem, always happy to help and thank you for the kind words! As for the anti skid light, as far as I know that is caused by a low voltage signal. Make sure your battery is in good condition, it's fully charged, all the cables are tight, and they're free of corrosion.

I see that there are brake rotors in several different sizes (278mm, 300mm, 320mm) that show compatible with 2009 Volvo S40 T5. Is there any way to know which size to get without taking the old one off? Are the different diameter rotors really all compatible?

Might be able to slip in a caliper with the wheel still in place or just give the dealer your vin and ask for a part number.

Great video. Quick question: What happens when you don't loosen the brake fluid reservoir cap? Some mechanic did that on my Volvo s40 and now I have the 'BRAKE' light on and a brake failure warning on the dash. I'll appreciate any help in how to resolve this.

Depends on the system, not removing the cap can just cause something as simple resistance when pushing the pistons back or something serious such as damaging seals in the modulator as the pressure builds up in the wrong direction and needs somewhere to escape. Did they loosen the bleeder screws instead? It's best to scan the fault codes first though.

I don't actually have any sockets like that. I just take my time, but you can apply some electrical tape or rubberized coating like Plasti Dip to the outside of the socket.

Definitely don't do that. As soon as you do that, you risk introducing air in your system which requires the system to be bleed.

Thanks, I was so why anti squeal grease wasn’t used? Most S40 brakes squeal and I think the grease actually is supplied with a lot of pads. Makes no sense……

The best one ive seen and will defo try it myself now. One quick question, i am getting a little bit of judder which increases and decreases dependant on speed when i brake on my C30 D5. Does this sound like discs/rotors that are slighly warped?

It's a debatable subject, some people do and others don't. I prefer not to as it's an open area where dust/dirt stick to the area and risk causing the pads to stick. I also don't like the risk of having grease drip on the braking surface.

My car had 18" wheels from factory and I believe I had the larger rotors. But it's best to either call the dealer and give them the vin to verify or measure them.

Check your caliper, it should be marked with the size of rotors needed.
