This is a really pro video for this job. But, my 85 had never been apart, 300,000. Miles. So the entire intake side, all the parts were very dirty. I took that all apart. However i am 75 years old, and now putting it back together. There is a memory problem. Cant seem to get the accelerator bracket into place, and there is a part with one wire, and offset mounting bolt holes under the intake manifold i cant figure out how to bolt to anything. Otherwise it has gone together pretty well. Did have to clean out several tubes that were carbonned up, i believe due to worn out valve guide seals and excessive oil burning. A few good photos of the parts under the manifold would be a big help here. Anyway, thanks for this great video, super job dealing with this tricky job.

That valve is the EACV. It has 2 hoses, one end seems to go to a rectangular box that bolts to the block, the forward end connects to the resonator. But where does it mount?
@jackdaws-corwin6300
@jackdaws-corwin6300 Жыл бұрын
So, i focused in on some of your video frames, found out where that valve mounted, and got her done. Also figured out the two part bracket for the throttle cable. Cold set the valve clearances. Put more parts back together. Checked all the vacuum hose placements, and replaced a few damaged ones. Maybe another day or two. Have some wires to repair, want to check my toe in. And check the oil level in the transmission. I wanted to r and r the clutch, but maybe i can do that in Oct. Anyway, thanks big time for making this video. Maybe this job wouldn't have been so interesting if i had watched it before i started wrenching in it🙄

After having done this, I'd like to point out a few things. Part kits for this vehicle are very inexpensive, you may as well put on new timing chain and cover along with water pump, along with head gasket for 100 buck. You might even want to buy a new head for only 300 buck or you can plain yours and flux test it at a machine shop for 125 bucks or so. To hire the work to be done for you will exceed the value of your vehicle so you might have to do it yourself. The intake bolts on the 22re have I think it was 15 hard to get to bolts to remove, and that back plate is very tough to get to also. Lining up timing marks and marking distributor was very easy, but breaking a head bolt will double the time it may normally take, as the 3rd bolt back on the exhaust side broke on me.Hours with a ratchet strap and prying was not enough to lift the head with the broke bolt, I had to put the hydraulic tire jack that came with the truck on a part of the block that stuck out, up under the head where it sticks out on the exhaust side turning with my fingers the head lifted with ease. Pipe wrench on the broken stud and pb blaster eventually allowed it to come out. Make sure you get your new timing cover back on and torqued down before torquing your head, otherwise it wont fit. Start screwing head bolts down in center on each side and then rotate side to side just as he says, to loosen head is outside to center the opposite as tightening. Torque in order all to 20, then 40, then 58 pounds of torque. Sure It's a big job and a fun adventure, but it beats paying someone a couple g's for doing it for you. This is a very good helping video, it helped me for sure having no manuals. They don't even make a mini pickup these days it's nice to keep the old one on the road as long as possible.

I never go full torque on the head bolts at first. I start from the inside just like you said but I will torque all bolts to around 30 ft/lbs then go up to full torque. It assures that even pressure is on the mating surface of the head and block once locked in at the final torque value.

Spray onto a rag then wipe the surface of the cylinder head. Fo not spray directly onto the cylinder head and fill up the holes for the bolts with liquid. The head bolts do not torque properly when a bolt hole has debrie. Use a qtip to gently clean out a bolt hole, when you do not have an air compressir.

@fixergood

to set it to tdc you need to have the valve cover of if your doing the headgasket. then line up the crank to the Mark's and the cam to its Mark's thanks for watchin really apreciate it
@jerryrussell2600

Notice in this video how the rotor on the distributor points to the 10 o'clock position on the distributor since he has the crankshaft timing marks so that the notch on the crankshaft pully aligns to the zero mark on that tab sticking out towards the crankshaft pully, and also the camshaft sprocket has a timing mark dot that aligns, and the timing chain has those off colored links that align to the camshaft sprocket timing dot. However on some this foes not exactly align vertically, as it is off to the left a bit. Notice that the two rockers on the valves for cylinder number one will be loose enough to be wiggled, since the cam lobes are not pushing on those two rockers. When the engine is TDC (top dead center) this means that the piston in the number one cylinder, which is the cylinder that is nearest to the front of the engine, will have its piston all the way up in the cylinder. There are two ways to check that the piston is indeed all the way to the top of that cylinder. I use a plastic straw inserted into the spark plug hole where I can feel that the top of the piston, which is preventing the straw from going deeper into the cylinder. That straw can be inserted further into the other cylinders whose pistons are not all the way to the top of the cylinder. Method number two is to use a small mirror and a small flashlight to try seeing the top of the piston, but it is not easy to see since the piston is covered in black carbon deposits. So there you have it, 5 ways to verify the timing is set to TDC (top dead center).

Update on the 22re head gasket job. After a few days here and there today I got the head off and found the blown outer edge of the second cylinder when facing the engine. Also noticed the plastic timing chain guide is broken on the right side facing the engine plus two grooves in the front cover. Is this a normal issue and or easy repair? Not sure what all to do with this truck now. Only 148000 approximate miles on it.
@fixergood
@fixergood 3 жыл бұрын
@@stoolie10 it's a really common issue with these engines. The timing guides break or wear out then the chain wears in the timing cover and somtimes it gets so bad it wears into the water jacket causing water to leak in to the crankcase. To fix this issue youl need to do a timing chain job and maybe a cover depending on how bad it is. When you have the head off now is the best time to do it. Hope this helps thanks for watchin.

He did not mention there is a hidden bolt that holds the cylinder head on, and that bolt is hard to see, because the head of that bolt is covered in oil, so until you soak up the oil with a rag or paper towell, you will not see that bolt. That bolt is inside of the cavity where the timing chain resides, and the bolt is located beneath where the gear on the distributor shaft was. The bolt goes vertically into the top of the timing chain cover.

There are a few tricks to not letting the timing chain drop down into the timing chain cover when you remove the cam sprocket from the camshaft. Somezip ties can hold the chain tight against the sprocket. I carved a wooden wedge that I tied to a long wire, and I shoved the wedge tightly into the cavity downwards between the left and right sides of the timing chain to hold the timing chain tightly against the tensioner, so the doring in the tensioner does not push the timing chain skack over too far so that you cannot get the sprocket back onto the camshaft.There is a metal wedge that is sold just for this purpose. Another good trick to know is to you use a 19 mm socket on a breaker bar onto the crankshaft bolt, you can rock the crankshaft back and forth two inches and this will help to force the spring in the timing chain tensioner over and provide the slack in the timing chain to get the sprocket back onto the camshaft. This trick works good when the timing chain has gotten dropped into the cavity avut then recovered by fishing it out of the cavity. Then hold the timing chain up tightly with one hand, while the other hand is rocking the crankshaft back and forth a few inches, with the breaker bar on the 19mm socket on the crankshaft bolt.
