Thanks, great video. I suppose it's time to quit stalling and go change my steering rack boot (well overdo...). Your descriptions are thorough but not overdone - perfect in a KZbin instructional! I enjoyed the chickens eating that corn cob at the end, I see some bits of pumpkin too - those are some properly spoiled chickens! The silky chickens always remind me of David Bowie. Thanks again.

I've done my whole suspension but I didn't do my tie rods and I can feel some play in what I believe is the tie rods. I'm toying with the idea of doing them myself. My 4runners got a 3 inch lift to fit 20 inch tires, which is probably the source of the tie rod wear. Your video is great, thanks for it. My 4runner is a 5th gen, verses your 3rd gen.

NICE 100K subs, CONGRATS!!! Well deserved and your videos are always great information for those who are looking to learn. I've been wrenching for over 25 years and still learn new things watching videos from you and others alike. No matter how much you think you know there's always more knowledge to be absorbed. I'll be doing a video on a full rack swap on my Volvo 745 turbo soon and will need to replace just the outer tie rods on the rack I'm swapping in luckily. Also, I had a lower balljoint on my Integra GSR I used to own that was lubricated by rust, lol. It squeaked so loud and when I went to replace it the amount of rust dust that came out of the balljoint was insane. There was zero grease left, just straight rust dust as lube. Look forward to your next video.

Hey, Faye and I do the same thing! I've tried torquing my lug nuts to 83 and in less than 100 miles all four wheels are loose. Then I tried 85. Same thing. Bought a new torque wrench. Tried my friends torque wrench. Same deal. Started going to 90 and they stay tight. I've been doing that for nearly 20 years now with no issues. I thought it might be something weird with just my truck. Maybe it is, but it's nice to know that a pro does the same thing. Also, great job teaching how to do tie rods and boots. I can't think of any relevant detail to add. You'd make a great tech school instructor.

What timing! I just replaced a wheel bearing and hub assembly and had my outer tie rod disconnected from the steering knuckle, at which point I realized there was In-N-Out play in my inner tie rod. The manufacturer discontinued my tie rod. As a result, only aftermarket is available the outer tie rod is still in excellent condition. As far as I know, they are original parts I have an inner tie rod tool like the one you used. I'm not sure what size crows foot will be needed with the tool. I've had my eye on a different type of inner tie rod tool apparently, there's one that uses a u-bolt, with neural edges to grip. It would essentially allow me to remove the entire inner and outer tie rod together. I was contemplating doing that, and then matching it up to the aftermarket inner and outer tie rod ends. Essentially adjusting the aftermarket tie rod to the same length, creating the witness mark, and Counting the turns as I disassemble the aftermarket tie rod ends. Counting turns on the OEM part would not translate to an aftermarket part. This is the best work around I've come up with so far. I'm also concerned with using the tie rod tool such as you did to remove the old tie rod, for fear that I'll damage the steering rack or its seal. I have no idea what the appropriate size wrenches would be as I've never had it apart. I also don't have wrenches at 40 mm, or whatever my rack happens to have. I don't like the idea of partially disassembling everything, only to find I don't have the tool I need to continue without risking damage to the rack. It's my only vehicle. If things go wrong I end up stranded with no way to get a part or a tool, short of an uber. I've got the torque specs for my vehicle and always torque everything to spec. On a side note, I found stainless steel cable ties! Theoretically they should work and last like the fancy one from the dealer

When it comes to customer cars, if the rack is leaking we recommend replacement rather than resealing. That gives the customer a parts warranty on the rack if there is a future problem and eliminates any chance for wear that was missed. On a personal vehicle, whatever.
@FayeHadley
@FayeHadley 2 жыл бұрын
I've found that even after replacing these, and a full system flush, they will just seep again a few months to a few years later. Even with brand new, perfect OEM parts at the dealership. That may be true for many manufacturers, but for whatever reason... the slight deep is a Toyota thing. I don't recommend a replacement until there is fluid on the ground and a low reservoir, otherwise I think it's a waste of $$!!

Hey Faye I was just watching this video because I had changed the inner and out tie rod and it was a nightmare on a Camry 2007.. First I screwed up with the number leading to the outer tie rod. Once I took off the fancy clip I had a universal tool with 3 coupling for the inner tie rod. 1 was too small 2) was ok but with some play 3) way too big . I was able to do it with number 2 and then to stack it I had the sub frame in the way and I couldn’t hit it or even use a flat head but with time I did it. It took me 4 hours and the alignment was bad. So after watching your video I would try it again some time. Thanks you make it look easy.

I need this done so bad but I don't have the tools money or time so I'll just have to take it to the shop and let a mechanic do it and pay him when I do get some money but other than that another awesome video!

You're a legend! Love you heaps. I'm learning so much from you. My son and I recently renewed the driver's side CV shaft on my 2001 Hilux, amongst many other maintenance/repair jobs we've done on our vehicles. 🥰

Had to do the boot replacement on my ol' 2005 Sequoia a few years ago. I used a MOOG part # K90437 for the passenger side.. driver side might be a different part number I read somewhere.

Faye, can you do a steering rack rebuild video? It would be super helpful. Thanks!
@FayeHadley

Ive thought about it! But every time I've done a rack rebuild, I have been in a rush to get it done, and didn't want to take the extra time filming! But I really should. Would you want to see it on the 4Runner? Or Tacoma or Supra?

@@FayeHadley a 3rd gen 4runner would be most excellent. Thanks Faye! Keep up the great work 😁

Nice interesting array of metal tooling used here. Even mechanics have to keep watch on what they're doing lest they botch things up.

Great instruction, it will work on any rack basically. Too bad you only work on Toyotas. We had to work on everything, so always a new challenge.
