Got er done and no leaks! I did have a problem while it was upside down. Seems the crankshaft will slide down( up when it's upside down) and then the cover won't drop. I had to slide the crank gear up and realign the timing marks. Eventually it went together. Evidently you're not supposed to stand them right on their tops. No harm done, just a little extra work. Thanks again for the video! It was a tremendous help!! Now for some dinner!!

Thanks! I just finished changing the sump gasket and seal on an otherwise perfect Craftsman PYT9000 that I picked up for only $20! Oil was leaking like crazy and the mower smoked after a couple minutes. I watched your video like 20 times while I did the job. Turned out great. No leaks. The old gasket was all crumbled and hard. You're the best!

Last fall (2023) I got a 'free' 54 inch zero turn mower from a scrapper. It was "junk" because it had had a gas fire and melted everything plastic on the mower, including the carb float. I stripped it down of all plastic, including the manifold , spritzed a bit of starter fluid at it and it fired up. Knowing it was a 2008 mower but only having 295 hours on it, I proceeded to round up parts(used off ebay if possible) . After a lot of clean up , new belts and a few deck parts, it started , ran and mowed great. but almost immediately started leaking oil. I looked on line and find these engines had problems with that gasket, so I watched 2 or 3 videos on replacing it. NONE of them mentioned the important parts, like governor linkage adjustment. THEN, I find this video. I pulled the engine and find the gasket is sucked in on both sides. Currently waiting for my gasket set so I can finish this job up and get to mowing with a "free" zero turn, that I will have about $350 dollars invested in. Thanks for covering the important points on this repair!

Thanks for the video took my Husqvarna lawn tractor lgt2654 to a local small engine mechanic for this exact problem and he talk all around fixing the crank case seal and sump gasket and said it would be a long term job and claim he would have to pull the deck off lawn mower and to take engine off that was a red flag for me right there when he said that had already watch your video several times so I order the exact parts u showed and even order valve cover gasket pulled engine off today done exact steps u said do put everything back together and no more oil leaks and runs like a charm fired up first turn of key thanks again!

I watched and rewatched (x5 slow learner )your video on the B&S sump gasket repair, because you detailed the correct way to adjust the governor after the gasket had been installed. The governor gear had failed and I had purchased a new gear and washer for the motor. The new governor gear did not survive the restart of the motor. Upon the disassembled I found the new gear completely destroyed. I thought maybe i hadn't followed your instructions about moving the governor control arm up inside the sump when reassembling the motor. I again reassembled the motor with a new governor gear and washer. This one survived the restart at half throttle, but when advanced to full throttle again ran away and destroyed the gear assembly. I disassembled the motor again and after checking all the dowels that position the gasket on the crankcase, realized that the pin for the governor also was a dowel. (I thought) I grabbed it and it came out of the case. I checked it and it had a few scuff marks on it. I figured that it would just be easier to order a new pin to install. Imagine my surprise when I found that there isn't a replacement pin offered by B&S. After more research on the subject I found out that the pin is actually pressed into the case. If the steel governor gear spinning around the steel pin wears or gets galled by heat or lack of lubrication it will seize onto the pin or destroy itself. If it seizes onto the pin and spins the steel pin in the aluminum casting, then B&S considers the case ruined and a throw away. After watching several of your detailed videos about b&s and Kohler engines, I figured that this is a subject that you might want to make a video about. I've researched this a bit and it isn't uncommon for this to happen on older B&S -twin engines. It might save someone (like me) a lot of time and money if part of the inspection upon the disassembled included a check of the pin. It would have saved me at least $100 in parts, shipping, fluids and filters had I known to check that one little steel shaft first. I did see that one other KZbinr had made a video detailing a fix using JB weld to hold the steel pin for the governor gear. If U have a better solution maybe U should include it in a repair video update about governor gears on B&S v-twin engines. Love the costumes, the movies , but especially the detail and clearly and slowly defined way of explaining the disassembly and reassembly of what U are working on. Six thumbs up!!! "There's your dinner!"

Thanks for the visuals. Had some odd things happen when I hooked the linkages back up. I could only get a super low rpm. I left the cables hooked up when I pulled the engine. Anyway, I took things off and double checked, fixed the issue. Only thing I've got left to figure out is the mower is hunting both at idle and under load. I didn't touch the carburetor. Might try and put some fuel additive in and see. Thanks again for this!

Just wanted to say thanks for showing us how to do this Taryl. I have this exact mower and had a serious oil leak and no idea what to do about it. I'm a relatively green mechanic but your 'how to' film spelled it out so clearly even I could do it. Took me 3 days on and off and had to watch your video many times. Only problems I encountered were the 4 engine bolts and clutch spindle were very tight. I fixed this by cutting the end off a metal hoe to extend my socket's leverage. I also needed to lock the engine when removing the clutch spindle by stuffing 3' of clothes line into the spark plug hole. Had a bit of a tussle too refitting the sump cover, couldn't quite get it to fit - had a 1/4" gap. I eventually sussed out the 2 dowels weren't lined up perfectly, then it dropped in. Your explanation of how to set the governor was first class, and she fired up first time. Many thanks Taryl from the UK.

Bam!!! There's your dinner! You reminded me to check the oil drain plug. Thanks for the tip. That oil plug being loose is scary for sure. I have a friend that blew an engine on his zero turn because of no oil and another friend and I wondered how the heck did that happen. I bet that the drain plug fell out and my friend didn't even check the dipstick. Oh well it still happened.

Thank you for your video. I used it last week to replace the oil pan gasket and shaft seal on my mower. It was very helpful (and entertaining). A tip I would add for others using the video for reference would be to consider also changing the governor shaft seal and the oil pump o-ring while you've got the pan off. The parts are cheap enough...

Even though this video is 5 years old as I write this, it was a fantastic help. I noticed a couple of things on my 17-year-old V-Twin. 1. The threads had a slight pull in the block, and adding a chamfer will eliminate this. 2. The castings (both) had sharp internal edges, that could lead to gasket failure. Again, chamfering or softening the internal edges will reduce stress points and possible failure. Keep'r between the ditches!

I just completed this operation and this vid helped a lot! My engine had a different oil pump gasket (flat) and an automatic choke. Other than that it was the same inside with the gasket failied along the long edge. The most difficult part was removing the pulley. I had to fabricate a puller from a steel plate and three long bolts to fit the holes in the pulley. I did not replace the crank seal but had to guide it past the crank with an awl. No more leak!

Bless you Taryl !! I took on a 24hp Intek sump gasket for the first time. I was losing a pint an hour and everything was a mess on top of a mess. It took me quite a while but after torqueing the sump down I flipped the motor and heard a distinct Rattle inside. HUH? Oh well, I mounted it back up and it ran great until I noticed the oil pressure light was lit. I had NO idea what to do next until I watched this video. Thank you for including the oil pump shaft explanation. I found mine rolling around next to the crank it had fallen out. And of course my guide pin fell in. Put everything back and everything was great, running, oil pressure, then it caught fire right behind the muffler. I am hoping it was just some of the oily mess I created. I got my Dinner!! I had better luck with the PTO seal by putting it on last after I set the sump, then I tapped it home using the old seal to counter sink it. The first time I installed it on the sump first & my spring came out also.

Taryl thanks for a great video. My mower was leaking oil and I thought it was the sending unit beside the oil filter. When that didn't fix it I came to youtube and found your video. I tore it down today and sure enough about three inches of gasket was gone right beside the filter. My mower ( 52" bobcat) is 14 years old now. I will make it through this season and I may upgrade to a new engine before next year. The bobcat has a little over 900 hrs but everything else is still solid. It has an 18 hp on it now. I may go to a 24hp. Thanks for a great video. Nice teeth!!!! lmao

this video was very helpful, especially the part about setting the governor. One thing that could be added to this (and other videos) is how to take the drive/mower pulley off the crankshaft. I had to do a search to find a trick where you stuff a few inches of cotton rope in the cylinder, through the spark plug hole, to stop the crank from spinning while you remove the bolt holding the pulley. Other than that, awesome video. Thanks so much.

Great video, as usual. My BS V-twin leaks at the same gasket and I assumed it would require a full tear down, but it’s not half as bad as that. Looks as if I should be able to finish it in an afternoon or weekend with your tips. I only wish I had a Koehler or Kawasaki instead, because any time I repair a BS engine the result still leaves me with one of their junk engines.

Taryl, I never comment on anything so it is rare for me to pay someone a compliment. "Fluffy" caused the old "pushrod in the oilpan because of a stupid nest on #1" thing. I was going to just leave it in the pan but too many people said not to ......so after ripping it all apart I woke up today to start exactly what this video covers. I am so glad that I looked to see if you had a "how to" on this event because my confidence level is now where it needs to be.....I would have screwed up the oil pump and governor installs fer sur. Your videos are well-filmed and your specifics on part ordering and recommended items are exactly what we "shade-tree" folks need. Listening to your instructions makes me feel like I am back in a DOD mechanics course with the Gunny. One philosophical question for you.....after watching one of your more recent vids on how newer mowers are all trending towards being "crappy"....what are we going to do in the future? My plan is to buy whatever is on sale, make sure I get the 3-year warrantee, and then junk it before I have to start spending every weekend doing 6hrs maint to get 1 hour of grass cut. It's worse than owning an AMC Harley Davidson. Maybe you could start your own production line?

Thank you Taryl, I have a 4 year old tractor that all of a sudden leaked a river of oil after changing this spring 2020. I couldn't figure it out. Today I stopped mowing after smelling burning oil and sure enough, it's leaking but I could not figure where from. It seems to be above the filter. Now, after watching your video I understand. My sump gasket has to be broken above the filter. I'm guessing every time I change my oil it pulls the gasket out more and more. When I changed the oil in the spring I also added a street pipe to the oil drain because the drain valve was loose. This all does anger me though. I expected better from B&S

Hi Taryl, Just watched your video which inspired me to attempt the sump gasket repair on my YT2348. Do you have a video on how to remove and replace the engine? I understand the clutch can be tricky to shift. Any help gratefully received ! Best regards.

Was disassembly of the oil pump necessary to replace sump gasket? I'm getting ready to remove the sump pan to retrieve the aluminum rod that fell down into the engine. I want to get in an out as quickly as possible. Great video!
