do you absolutely have to drain the coolant ?

10:55- that bracket you are putting on should go behind the throttle cable bracket by your left thumb and that is another stud bolt. Some body put it on wrong the last time this was done.

I just pop my Housing off when it's cool & take out the old & drop in the new thermostat. I Just did my water pump, Severe Duty Clutch Fan & thermostat on my 2002 Blazer ZR2 which shows on a scan tool to be a Trailblazer! Took about an hour.

Interesting. I don't want to drain the system myself as I am worried about the collection of all the old antifreeze since we have pets around. My plan is to change the part myself and then flush it out.

So there’s no bleeding the system on these??? I know in other cars I leave the funnel on with enough coolant in there while the engine gets to temp and usually don’t cap it until I get all the air out
@uzileopard6199
@uzileopard6199 3 жыл бұрын
He did, it was just skipped over. That funnel he used is specifically made for coolant cause it has different parts/add ons in the kit to create a vacuum seal. It’s a cool little tool to have but i mean it is pricey $30 for a funnel.

165 is probably too cool. Your thermostat might be stuck open. These 4.3 V6s are meant to run at 195.
@thagerdorn2009
@thagerdorn2009 Жыл бұрын
165 is very bad for these trucks. HAS to be around 195-210 or it won't run right. Owned a bunch of these and worked on hundreds. And my current one I'm replacing it because it wouldn't even reach 195 degrees.

Those Thermostat Housing Bolts snap very easily. The 4.3's are known for snapping. I just run 1 bolt for years & no leaks. If you can get both out? Put some grease on them, for future replacement.

Does anyone notice any performance differences by running 180 vs 195. Did mileage drop off? Mine seems to be running warmer than I want according to the guage. Thinking about a good radiator flush, new coolant and thermostat.

Why not reattatch radiator hose before installing thermostat and then refilling block as much as possible then install thermo/housing, yhen refill radiator. To me it makes more sense because your block will already be partially flked and tthen you wont have as much risk of it overheating as you add more clant and burp the system. Sort of like filling an oil filter with as much oil as you can before installing to have full oil pressure. It will be ok your way, but I'd figured I'd throw that in.

@theguy4801
@theguy4801 3 жыл бұрын
I’m a painter not a mechanic but I believe the distilled water will be less likely to promote corrosion. Water has a ton of minerals in it and obviously those will react with other stuff especially ferrous metals!

@@2carpros yes it actually does matter. You can't get brake cleaner or carb cleaner in the cooling system buddy. You can get it in the engine itself and it'll be fine. But not the cooling system. It's pretty easy to clean the surface with the thermostat still in. I've done thousands of thermostats and I've actually seen an engine seize from someone getting brake cleaner in the cooling system.

While technically correct. Hose water is just fine especially when you are working on blown head gasket cars that aren't going to be on the road long enough for chemical reaction of hose water to effect the different metals in the system.
