This video shows how easy it is to replace timing belt (also known as cambelt) for 1.9 TDI PD engine. The car in the video is first generation of Skoda Superb (3U). This car is a sister car to Volkswagen Passat B5+. So these instructions can be applied to facelift of VW Passat B5 - also known as B5+ or B5.5
Here's the link to full description of this job with images, also available in printable format:

I have few useful links for you:
If you are looking for timing belt tool set here's the link to relevant eBay page:
rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53...
Personally, out of all choices, I have chosen this one (works even on my new 2012 VW Sharan common rail engine):
rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53...
Also in addition, because it's PD engine, for perfection torsion value needs to be adjusted, here's good article about it:

This really is one of the best guides out there. I'm finding lately especially on older Passats that a lot of bolts on the lock carrier assembly are seized and break off. Taking more time to sort that than actually doing the belt

Great video, helped me to do my timing belt on my Audi A4 B6 1.9 PD130. I was unable to set the 3 13m camshaft pulley bolts in the centre but the car fired straight up and actually starts better then it did before. I'll be checking my torsion value tomorrow to make sure it's within spec (between -3.0 and +3.0)

Very impressed with your work, it's nice to find someone who knows what they are talking about and explains all the little bits that other people do not know or bother about and does the job correctly! Things like only turning clockwise and keeping the belt in the same direction when replacing and torque settings etc, things many people don't use. @wawayltd
@wawayltd 7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it worked for you, however I wouldn't recommend to replace it this way, because camshaft (big upper wheel) needs to be aligned perfectly with crankshaft (small wheel). Furthermore, on PD engines they also align high pressure tandem fuel pump with computer (VAG COM), but we didn't do that. If your engine works, I don't think you should worry - it will work.. But valves opening and closing times might be not so perfect. Thanks for nice words anyway ;)

Thank you for taking the time to make such a detailed video. Would a tensioner which is 1mm to the left of the gap cause timing issues due to the belt being too slack?
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I don't think that 1mm off that pointer would cause trouble. Position of of that also depends on engine temperature. Try to look at it when engine is hot, or whe it's running - it's all over the place.

All you need is crankshaft lock (please mind there are 2 types, I would get both), camshaft pin (or 2 pins if it's dual camshaft) and maybe those bolts to hold the bumper. That's it.

Any bolt which has torque+angle specified, should be changed, since it's torque to yield bolt (bolt is stretched after first used, so if you reuse it, it can stretch past the ultimate tensile strength and brake). So it's stud for the tensioner, camshaft sprocket bolts, crankshaft pulley bolts and usually all bolts for the engine mount.
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 3 жыл бұрын
I'm aware that manuals ask for new bolts. And with cambelt renewal, I like when new kit comes with all new bolts, nuts and studs. But if we are talking about engine mount bolts, like on my Sharan - sometimes I use all new bolts, apart those little ones for vibration dumper on a crankshaft pulley, but not every time. By the way, my car (VW Sharan) is on 411.000 miles, so it had few cambelts by now. The way I look at renewing mount bolts, yes it's good to have new fresh ones. Especially if you follow all torque values - this many Nm + this many degrees. However just few new bolts can easily cost you 40-50 quid. I spoke to dealership and asked do they really replace bolts on every cambelt job? They said that they don't remove mount, but just bracket to avoid removing extra bolts. But if you change cambelt in any third party garage, you don't normally see extra 40 quid for bolts, if they would spend that - they definitely would put it on the bill. Anyway, long story short. Cambelt bolts, nuts and studs - big YES. Mount bolts, if I go by feel with tightening re-used bolts, I think they can live long life. Think of wheel bolts - every tyre or brake change, every time I need to take my wheel off! And those are the same bolts since the car was born. I'm not saying that I'm cambelt guru and ignore the manual, I'm just sharing personal practical experience. Therefore if your mount bolts break for some reason, please don't have a go at me 😁😉
@quincycz
@quincycz 3 жыл бұрын
@@wawayltd Yep, those bolts are few bucks each. I just read article in one magazine, where they strongly recommended changing engine mount bolts, since they seen numerous cases where they failed and you can image what happens when you cruising 150km/h on highway. You can't compare it with wheel bolts, since they are not torque to yield bolts, so there is no elastic deformation, if properly torqued. Just my two cents to help others :D

Hi m8 it's a great video to be honest. I have an audi a3 1.9 tdi pd 55 reg. The last time the timing belt was changed at 88000 miles. Now the mileage is 135000. When do I need to renew the belt and water pump? I remember the last time the belt was being changed I was watching. He also used a while mark on the top of the camshaft as well as the crankshafts with a white pen. I don't knows why he did that
@wawayltd
@wawayltd Жыл бұрын
Hi Mumtaz, if you don't do many miles - cambelt needs to be changed every 5 years, or with lot of mileage - I change it every 100.000 miles. I think on older cars, like yours it was 60.000. If you change cambelt following manufacturers recommendations, white marks are not necessary. Some people do it for extra reassurance, also some do it to make a shortcut, save time and avoid full procedure with alignment.

I never tried to start the engine without coolant. Don't know, there can be many reasons.. Maybe some gap in fuel supply? Or air intake.. or battery.. If it's turning, then probably not the battery. NB! you forgot to tell that befor instaling the new belt on place in order to do it well the camshaft pulley( with three bolts losed) have to be turned half way clockwise so the bolts stay in the middle of the pulley holes. The order of instaling the belt is next on camshaft next over water pump pulley and tensioner and idle roller next over crankshaft pulley last time.Never turn engine crankshaft or cam shaft other way than clockwise. Good luck
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for additional info. Next time I'll do the cambelt, I'll try to fit the belt in your order and see if it will be easier. Regarding turning engine anti-clockwise, I believe there won't be any harm if we need to turn it tiny bit backwards during adjustment. During adjustments, when we lock camshaft and discover that crankshaft has gone pass locking point - what should we do? We can't go rounds clockwise, because camshaft is locked, and we have 2 ways of doing it: 1. Lock crankshaft and with 3 bolts loose turn actual camshaft by 16mm bolt in the middle till we can lock it (I don't fancy this way, even though that bolt is 100Nm tight, it's a bolt so I don't want to use it for adjustments) 2. The way I described (also says in the manual I use) - if it's misaligned this way - lock camshaft, loosen 3 bolts, go slightly anticlockwise, but pass locking point (important!) and then lock it while turning it clockwise. I think the reason, it can't go anti-clockwise "under no circumstances", if we talk about slight movements for adjustments is the fact that it HAS to go clockwise before being locked, so tension of the belt stays with engine rotation, otherwise we'll never get it aligned. And I agree - rotating engine anti-clockwise is stupid. Thanks again for your input, and sorry for load of text :)
@grymstal
@grymstal 8 жыл бұрын
I am very sure that you know very well what you do no matter witch way you chosse to use in order to get it done but what about some one thats doing it for first time? I agree to show to the others the right way in order to learn something good before doing tricky job. I consider that is quiet complicated to understand the engine timing for a beginner . Tiny adjustements of cam pulley are agreed as long this is specified , clockwise the crankshaft pulley rotate and pulls the belt over water pump pulley (witch is fixed and stable) in order to rotate the camshaft so the tension is stable . Counter clockwise is different as long there is a tensioner so the belt tension may varry due the centrifugal force so this is the reason why the tensioner is not set between CA an CS where the belt is pulled by CS pulley and it is set after CS pulley where the belt tension is lower than the other side but not a very big tension difference due TP. I really appreciate you opinion. Keep it on , you do it well :)

Great run down bro. My challenge to you is to step it up a notch: Do it without the Special Service Tools (SSTs). Most lay people won't have ready access to these SSTs so if you could work around this that would be totally awesome.
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 5 жыл бұрын
The only SSTs you need is camshaft locker (can use 6mm drill bit) and crankshaft locker. All together can be bought on Internet for like a 10-er, but then you know that the job is done properly.
@roarhelle
@roarhelle 2 жыл бұрын
Why is there a point to do a cambelt change without using a proper tool for the job? If you don't have the SST to do the job, then do not start on the job until u do. If a job require a XZN no 14 but since you do not have it, do you use a regular torx bit no 13 then and hope it works well without the danger of destroying the bolt? Seriously? Is that the challenge?

Every screw which has a dregree value to torque should be renewed.
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 3 жыл бұрын
I aware that manuals ask for new bolts. I think when I've done cambelt on my Sharan I did use new bolts, apart those little ones for vibration dumper on a crankshaft pulley. However on my next cambelt changes I didn't do it every time. By the way, my Sharan is on 421.000 miles, so it had few cambelts by now. The way I look at renewing these bolts, yes it's good to have new fresh ones. Especially if you follow all torque values - this many Nm + thos many degrees. If I go by feel with tightening re-used bolts, I think they can live long life. Think of wheel bolts - every tyre of brake change, every time I need to take my wheel off! And those are the same bolts since the car was born. I'm not saying that I'm cambelt guru and you should listen to me and not the manual, I'm just sharing personal practical experience. Therefore if your mount bolts break for some reason, please don't have a go at me 😁😉

@@wawayltd The risk is, that these are expansion screws which undergo a plastic deformation when you tighten them with angle. These deformation is retained when they are loosened again. When you tighten it again, you deform it more and more. The bolt for the tensioner pulley costs 0,5€ @ VAG (in 2010), not worth to risk your engine. But except this it's an awesome video, thank you! I will use it for my change soon. Greets from Austria.
@wawayltd

Thanks, that's why I try to promote DIY on my channel and website - because average garage won't bother with new bolts, but when you do it to your loved car - that's a different story. I realised that we are talking about Skoda engine here that didn't require removing engine mount. If engine is positioned across (like Sharan), those mount bolts can cost some money... Anyway - many thanks for your input. By the way - new version of the website is coming out soon.. The old one is outdated rubbish.

@wawayltd
@wawayltd 7 жыл бұрын
With the way that you described - are you going to lock crankshaft and crankshaft? If not, then it may work, but if the old belt is stretched then you won't get the same alignment.. but if you count the teeth, you probably can get same result as previous change (if they got it right ;) ).. still big risk of getting wrong. Locking tools are widely available on Internet and they are not expensive - I think it's safer to do it normal way. 3 bolts on the camshaft sprocket are needed only for belt adjustment, there is not much point of saving that setting if belt is off. By the way later after that video, I've learned (have a look at my last cambelt video on Passat) that with crankshaft and camshaft locked and with those 3 bolts loose, when you are fitting new belt - you can safely turn sprocket all the way clockwise (as far as elongated holes will allow), because when you are going to set tensioner, it will pull the belt back, so 3 bolts will get in the middle.
