Thanks so so much for taking the time to put this video together. Especially for all the effort in framing the shots properly without wobbly/blurry/unclear sections, not to mention the incredibly straightforward layman-style explanations of the process. I've a little mechanical DIY experience, and I'll be doing my first cambelt myself because of your excellent video. :)

@dismalfist Жыл бұрын
@@kn520 Hi there. Was a long long time back but happily got into the hobby and have done a few now! Depends greatly on the car but lining up the timing marks obviously essential. If you have a water pump on whatever car you're doing, I use old school hylomar on the gaskets and a teeny coating of red rubber grease on the o-ring types, but not convinced the red rubber grease is super amazing. Some say just use coolant to lubricate those. Progressively tighten bolts in a star pattern also. Also get a manual and watch as many KZbin videos as you can for your car. If it's a single cam engine it'll be daunting but easy and logical when you're in there. Good luck!
@raycarr2258 жыл бұрын
I just finished the job. Thank you! What I did different: made a shorter harmonic balancer tool to remove the bolt and re install it; used a harmonic balancer puller; did not take off the plugs which allowed the timing to stay put; did not remove the motor mount, but the 3 screws on the motor mount towards the belt side (2 under and 1 on top) and pried it apart with a jack handle to slip the new belt in; raised the engine about an inch to closed the motor mount area that was pried open; cleaned the area prior to installing belt which was oily( belt was cracked all over); used the jack handle to push the new belt bearing to the side and which allowed the belt to easily go on; only removed the alternator and air conditioning belts; cleaned the valve cover gasket and added sealant or gasket maker to keep oil in and away from the belt; aligned the markings per your and other videos; rotated the engine as you did and which is an area that the lobes are not located. A very long and tiring job! Thank you again.

had to lock the belt tensioner bearing to keep the belt from jumping and while rotating cam. used a cylinder compression gauge to determine TDC exhaust and not intake cycle. do the markings! determining belt deflection- used a ruler. the tip on determining TDC was priceless-screwdriver(or object) in cyl 1,timing mark -0 and crank shaft marking, camshaft marking and crankshaft woodruff key pointing up. do the markings! there's a pdf manual on this model for free and on google. leaving vehicle jacked on one side for extended time may damaged cv joint on opposite wheel. Thank you Mr. Finn for your time in making this video.

Very helpful. The crank pulley (behind the harmonic balancer) was the most difficult job. I had to tap two bolts and pull using the a puller I got for free from Autozone (definitely do this with the old belt attached with tension). For some reason the water pump was annoying too but very rewarding diy job.

wow, thanks peter. i had changed timing belts in several cars before. but i stumbled on my 92 corolla and ended up having the shop do it for $500+. this video just pops up in my feed. so i was curious to see what i missed before. at 23.46, never saw that little nut from below on the engine mount. that explained why i tried to lift the engine up for more room to work on, the whole body frame lifted up with the engine too. not suppose to be that way. i was worried that i might break something else. now i know why. i have another 20,000 miles for my next time belt change. now i know what to do next time.

Thanks for this video. I’ll be able to replace the timing belt of my friend’s car. If you don’t have the proper tool to loosening the crankshaft. You can use a long bar with a size socket and turn the switch like trying to crank, and then that will make the job more easy. It has to be before you disconnect the battery. So, continue the rest of the job. Just a trick

It was well overdue and the belts were squealing. However, It has been back to garage as there is still a little chirp and squeal under full lock on steering, (Stationary). They have adjusted, but it still squeals under full lock. We did not change idler tension pulley. What would be your thoughts pls. Regards, Steve.

Greetings, Thank you for the video demonstration. I have a corolla 1998 and I suppose it has internal timing chain and not external timing belt. The title of your video is "How to replace timing belt Toyota Corolla. Years 1992 to 2002." This makes me wonder. From 1998 on all corollas are supposed to have timing chain. Am I correct?
@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor9 жыл бұрын
+Ali Umar Hi. Timing chain came year 2000.

Peter, Two questions (Note: All work with engine still in the car): One: I need to change the water pump on my 1995 Corolla 1.6L. Is it possible to get the water pump off without removing the timing belt or the timing belt tensioner? It looks very tight. It looks like one bolt from the water pump sits near the belt and tensioner. Two: I cannot get the center engine cover off. I do not want to remove the engine drive shaft pulley (Harmonic Balancer) to give access to the bottom engine cover if I do not have to. I have seen from your video that if I remove the bottom engine cover, then I can remove the center cover. Instead, if I remove all four bolts that hold the Pulley onto the Water Pump Driveshaft, can I get enough room to pull off the center engine cover? Thanks :)
@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Here are answers: One: Timing belt must remove Two:Center cover opens, when you tried to open it from all directions

OK. Since timing belt must be removed, might as well change timing belt and tensioner with new ones at the same time as changing the water pump. Thank you :)

Yes, you can. Do first many markings to old and new belt. And engine parts too.

Do to your good willing to show timing belt replacement of toyota corolla I could do the same in my Toyota. I notice through your videos that you know very well Toyota Corolla. I have the following problem: The buzzer of the warning lights on does not work. Probably it is a problem related to a relay.I know there are several relays near the clutch but I do not know which is the right one. Can you help me with that ? It is a corolla year 1998 liftback.1.4. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
