Got this, and the water pump done on my 2001 non-turbo, which was almost 40K overdue---first timing belt job ever, and took me over 7 hours. The old belt looked good, but the pulleys were definitely going; a good amount of grease was coming out of those bearings. My near-245K S60 is definitely happier. This video especially helped with the water pump segment! Thanks!

Outstanding advice you give here. I have commented on other videos of yours. I did the timing belt yesterday on my 2005 XC70 2.5T dual VVT, the engine on this video is identical to mine so it was a great help! I was about to reach out on the usage of the camshaft locking tool because I saw the hubs moved forward when I loosened the part providing the reading for the Camshaft position sensors, but they didn't rotate, and I tightened the bolts again and came back so I went ahead and did it. The car runs like a charm and the time didn't move. Water pump was nice and dry, not a single seal leaking. I wish I would have had a front sprocket locking tool, the most tricky part was to get the belt on while keeping the VVT hubs loaded forward. Oh man good parts on this car aren't cheap (FCP Euro gave me the best prices and availability compared to eEuro and other retailers) but they last a long time and this Viking machines are incredibly well built. Cheers brother!!!

@user-jt2zv7ni5o you don't usually see belts breaking, that is usually a seized tensioner. I'm down to my third belt since I wrote that comment with other cars in the family and learned a few lessons on those. I would not give up on the engine just yet. Try rotating the crank with a ratchet and a 30mm socket. Do it by hand and carefully feel for interference between pistons and valves. Once the belt is removed you can certainly move the hubs by hand but I advise to reserve this for final adjustment only. Feel free to reach out by private and I'll be happy to help you out. Best of luck 🙏
@bennyl.58992 жыл бұрын
@user-jt2zv7ni5o one thing I would recommend though... If your belt broke, hopefully the engine stalled right away. However, if you have access to a good scanner book it up to get data from your crank position sensors and your camshaft position sensors, remember your crank will rotate 360 degrees for every 180 in your camshafts (I bought an iCarSoft specific to Volvo and Saab and it's quite capable)

I have two remaining codes on my S40, one being the cat system. I replaced the lower one, and the upper one is getting replaced next week. The other is a p0017, which I'm guessing now is either the timing belt or cam sensor. I had the crank sensor replaced, but I'm hoping it's not the timing belt, which I had replaced already only a couple years ago. It might be off a perfect alignment, but I'm hoping the code clears easier than having to do that again.

Thanks for this very helpful video, Mr. Spinner. Every step is well explained and well lit. There are also helpful tricks, like lifting the engine mount to make more room to access the water pump. Any time you're in there, you might as well replace everything in the area that you're going to access so you don't have to touch it again. I'd rather know that everything was replaced in that area rather than have to worry about x, y, or z later down the road if you didn't replace them.
@wesleydunn32868 жыл бұрын
I love the tip about the mount. However, I have had one of these mounts horribly fail to where I had to cut the rubber away to get the bolts out. To keep from putting extra stress on that mount, maybe try a block of wood to support the engine there. I always use you're videos for reference. On a side note, if you happen to get another dual vvt car, could you snap a picture of the back of the cams with both front marks aligned? I recently bought a used head, and someone took off the exhaust hub so I'm not sure if I've got the exhaust cam right or 180* off. Thanks and keep up the good work!
@RobertDIY8 жыл бұрын
Did you look at my timing demo video? They are all the same on the back, the locking tool only works one way.
@wesleydunn32868 жыл бұрын
Do you have a link to said video? I'm having a hard time finding it using mobile. On the vvt heads, the rear of the cams has 3 slots missing for each cam. Two tool sits in two slots on each cam. I was curious about the position of the third notch. Since the hub was removed the timing marks aren't lining up. I want to get the cam locked in the right position, then loosen the hub and make the marks align, than tighten it all down. Thabks
@RobertDIY8 жыл бұрын
I do NOT have a video showing how to properly set up the hubs from scratch. So, I really can't help you there. You can take it to a mechanic and get it set properly. I did a video in Brimmington WA showing the back of the cams with the tool installed.
@wesleydunn32868 жыл бұрын
Ok. I'm sure I'll be able to find it. Looking at the valves, I'm 99% sure I've got it right, but with these cars that's not good enough as you know. Btw, are you over on volvospeed?

Nope. If the timing is off, it will likely toss a code.

Hello Robert. The marks on your cam sprockets are aligned slightly to the right of the notches on the timing belt cover. On my car the marks instead line up slightly to the left of the notches. Does it mean my crank is off by one tooth? I've only checked the timing marks in winter with a cold engine and a garage temperature of 32F in case that makes a difference (thermal expansion, etc).

Thank you for all your videos, going to attempt this same procedure, water pump/timing belt this weekend. I do have a question for you, is it necessary to remove the harmonic balancer? There are other videos where they do not take the harmonic balancer off to remove the timing belt, I notice that they remove that lower bracket instead, but in that particular video, they did not change the water pump, which I am. I do not mind doing the extra work, but I was just wondering because: 1. I do not have an impact gun and afraid to move the lower crank when removing the crankshaft bolts 2. I do not have new replacement bolts for the balancer (Are they necessary?) I picked up the parts at Volvo and their parts guy told me that it is not necessary to replace the bolts (with new ones) on the water pump, your thoughts? Lots of questions, I thank you for your time. Your videos are thorough and well versed. Fantastic Work.

BTW It is on a 2004 Volvo V70R with 197,000 miles

I usually DO NOT remove the harmonic balancer. I remove the bracket from under the crank, two 10mm screws. You may need to replace the water pump bolts if the water pump housing is thinner, which is common for the new pumps vs the older ones.
@chayes954r8 жыл бұрын
Michael Saba... I just replaced my T- belt, water pump, tensioner, idler and lower main seal. I always replace the lower main seal when I do timing belts. I figure, if the seal survived 105,000 miles, might as well change it and it'll probably go another 105,000 miles without leaking. Not much additional work for this insurance. After I removed the harmonic balancer, I used a 2 jaw puller to remove the crankshaft timing belt sprocket. It was too tight to remove by hand. Yes, the crankshaft did move a little during this procedure, but I didn't have any valve contact or anything like that. After removing the sprocket, I used the lisle seal removal tool to easily pull the seal. I put a little white lithium grease on the lip of the new seal, then I (carefully!!) worked it on the crankshaft and into position. I used properly sized deep socket to drive the seal in the rest of the way. I cleaned the sprocket spline of any rust or debris with a small wire brush, then I re-installed it. It went on fairly easy, just tapping it with a brass hammer. Next I re-aligned the crankshaft timing marks, as they did move a little bit, not much though, no valve contact or anything like that. Then after the timing kit was installed I replaced the harmonic balancer, and torqued the crank nut to spec. That was it.
@michaelsaba65478 жыл бұрын
Man, little too late for, wish I would have thought of it then. I was intimidated to take the balancer off because I didn't want it to move, but in hindsight it would have been alright. Hopefully the seal won't fail on me. Thanks for the description though, next time I have to get in there I'll look into replacing.

Every single water pump failure on this engine was due to using an aftermarket pump. Use only Aisin or an original pump from the main dealer. Everything is great info, except I wouldn't fire up the motor without coolant and serpentine belt back on. There's no need, as hand rotation will show if the timing is properly aligned. Running the engine without coolant is really bad for the water pump seal, which needs the coolant to lubricate it.

Not sure if youstill answer these omments buuut trying to align this p2 (with old belt still on, doing bad water pump and belt cause its off) and my cam timing marks are about 180 off from each other and when one of the cams are aligned the crank is 180 out (both do this) car has no codes whatsoever..... no idea what to do
@RobertDIY2 жыл бұрын
If the car runs well, you put the crank on it's mark and make 2 new marks on the cams.

Thanks for the video Robert! Very nice job - I will be doing mine soon and this helps out a lot. Can you tell me how you get the crank pulley nut tightened up? Do you need a special tool to hold the crankshaft while tightening that huge bolt?
@RobertDIY7 жыл бұрын
+notny411 they just tighten it on with the impact gun.

Robert DIY what about a 1999 volvo s70 2.4 base
@aaronkraemer98877 жыл бұрын
Yes, SOME of it applies, but beware of differences in the vehicles that can make it a lot harder. My V50 for example was 10 times more difficult than portrayed on this video. Only a portion of it applied.
@kjadfhgioaudbfvilaeu4 жыл бұрын
2008 was the first of the P3 platform so beware. Similar to Aaron Kraemer's issue...V50s are P1. Apples and oranges.

Hi Mr Robert or any one, please I have a V50, 220 cv, changed the pump assembly, the old fuel sensor burn and a I noted, the new one can happen the same. ?That´s normal the Sensor Level lift to the righ position simply introducing the start key in "0" position or when disconect the negative cable from the batterie?. Tanks for your help. Nice year 2021.

Hey Robert, it’s Omar! Do the cams need to be locked from the front or back or not at all? I’m not sure if the cams put tension on the belt and if they turn when the belt is off.
@RobertDIY3 жыл бұрын
No, unless you break a hub bolt loose. Yes they will move when you pull the belt, but you simply turn the cams back to the marks when you install the belt.

Just did this on same engine but tensioner keeps moving back and forth when engine started. Any idea on that?
@RobertDIY2 жыл бұрын
If the tensioner is bouncing back and forth when you start the engine you likely tensioned it in the wrong direction. When you start the car that thing should stay steady and as the car heats up it will slowly move clockwise and just stay steady while the engine's running. The tensioner should have had a small arrow on it showing you which way to adjust the tension. If you keep having issues with it get a Volvo branded one, I hope you're not using aftermarket junk and your timing.
@chrisj83072 жыл бұрын
@@RobertDIY nope Ina branded from Continental. Will look for an but thought the newer/longer always should be clockwise. Thanks for replying 👍 /Chris

Thanks for the video, it had some good info, but it totally doesn't apply to my 2008 Volvo V50. I don't have near the room for getting at the timing belt side. I had to raise/lower the engine for different panels that needed to be removed and now I don't have the space needed to physically take the water pump out of the car. I'd like to strangle the Volvo engineers for their lack of thought for water pump replacement and clearance for removing anything on that side of the motor. I had to buy longer wrenches, and special adapters to get the right length for the sockets to fit in the narrow spaces. No one has any video on doing this on a 2008 V50, and now I know why...It was designed to keep backyard mechanics from doing the Volvo mechanics' jobs. Totally frustrating. If you have a newer V50, be sure you know what you're getting into...

I have been reading online that you need to “load” the cvvt cams to line up the cam marks. Essentially you turn the engine clockwise past the marks and then counter clockwise to hit the cam marks. Was that something you needed to do or does it apply to a different engine? Thanks
