That was a great job, I would recommend removing the radiator or have some cover over it, newer radiators are very thin, one wrong scrape of a part you are pulling and you have to put a new radiator in as well.

thanks, im going to get the same job done on my ford explorer and now i know how much work is involved just to get to the timing chain, can't wait for part 2!
@woolybear60655 жыл бұрын
As a suggestion: you might want to back up the radiator with a double layer of heavy duty cardboard- to protect the unit. cut it to fit, tape it into position. I learned the hard way...... Good video of play by play repair. Curt Gowdy would be proud!

@arenputnam44546 жыл бұрын
I actually tried the 2x4 trick on a f150 that I'm doing the timing chains on. I had to use a 2x6 but I'll be damned if it didn't work like a charm to get that crank nut loose..... well done 1AAuto.

So far, your video is doing me well. Thanks a ton. Any advice on how to get the 10mm bolt from under the power steering pump off? Can't get it and starting to think I may have to cut off PSP pulley.

How often should this be changed? I asked a shop about doing this for me on my 02 and they did not want to do because I told them I was not having any issues but have alot of miles and it has never been done.

If just the tensioner needs to be replaced can you just replace it with out removing the chain and Also redo the timing if nothing is wrong
@1971ss157 жыл бұрын
Tip for the 10mm bolt behind the power steering pump, from under the rig, remove the oil filter and turn the line coming out of the pump toward the engine, then a 10mm gear wrench can be used to remove it. Also for removing the harmonic balancer, use a breaker bar on the socket, and lay it against the driver side frame and hit the key and it will break it loose.
@uNkNoWnTeRRor66436 жыл бұрын
No Bro.. Just use a pulley puller on the power steerin pump pulley.. Autozone rents it for $41.80 out here in California.. As for the harmonic balancer trick.. Yea it works but Dangerous, personally I prefer the home made 2x4 balancer holder...

@@uNkNoWnTeRRor6643no bro just literally get a ratcheting wrench and go straight through the front of the pulley remove the pump and bolt simultaneously! No need to remove any of don’t touch the line!

This is a heck of a job, not to mention amount of tricky access, and putting all things aside, it to me, looks, lame engineering!.. Marvel brains in people that have to do job like that!.. not to mention to show others how to. Thank you for posting it here!.. I am just at a point to get to the power steering!.. 98 F150, with "R" bank compression from 1-4 @ 45, 50, 45, 50, and the left bank "L" 5-8 @ 140, 160, 50, 150. I am kind of wondering about the 7??? Your video, has confirmed all steps so far, that I had to do. For removal of the crank pulley, I used old water pump fan mounting wheel, in which I did cut three notches to fit my studs, put the chunk of metal against the bolt on shaft, and I pulled it off, by pressing the on the wheel, with bolts going to the pulley. I wonder if I have to remove the air compressor for this as I see some more bolts around there... Any answer would be appreciated.

Regarding the TSB Article No. 03-15-7..which is the faiure of the Timing Chain Guides. I'm concerned about the Timing Chain Guides used in the 2000-2003 4.6L engines in Crown Victoria & Grand Marquis. How miles of driving before you would expect to this to be am issue under normal use and regular Oil Changes? I currently have a 2002 Grand Marquis bought new with 52,000 miles.
@1AAuto5 жыл бұрын
+King Pin Difficult to predict when a part or parts will fail. During oil changes check for fine nylon and/or aluminum particles present in the engine oil. If you don't see that, then continue drive and maintain the car as usual.

I saw a guy put a nylon strap on. Put a little tape on to start it then wrapped the pulley and found a bolt to attach it to. Just have to be sure and wrap the opposite way from the bolt loosening torque of course. It worked great. video on here somewhere.

Can you show where the cover is? I am being told my truck has a hole in the timing cover.
@1AAuto10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. If you pause this video at 12:51 you can see the timing cover. The cover is behind the pulleys and you can get to it after you remove the crank shaft pulley.It is the big chunk of metal that is under the water pump and surrounds the Crank shaft where the Crank Shaft pulley sits Please let us know how the repair comes out! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
@amandamosman10 жыл бұрын
So. From looking at your video and pictures. I don't see how the tensioner can cause a hole. Plus I haven't had any problems with the vehicle while it's driving. The only thing my truck has been doing is when I start it I have to put push the gas pedal till it catches and if it is idling or in park it revs from 800 to 1200 rpm a times then settles back at 1000rpms, no other problems than that.
@1AAuto10 жыл бұрын
amanda mosman It is possible for the tensioner to put a hole in the cover however it is unlikely. The Timing cover is metal so it would require a good amount of force to make a hole. If the hole was from a timing tensioner then the car would most not start or fun poorly. Without the tensioner the belt would have slack and be able to skip teeth throwing off the timing. Hope this helps! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Thank you. We got all the repairs needed. Apparently the old tensioner wore a hole. It had broken and was loose. Then we replaced it so it luckily hadn't gotten worse.
